PlayStation Boss Indicates Vita 2 Is Unlikely, Responds To Switch Success

"The folks at Nintendo have their strategy and that's great."

The Nintendo Switch launched in March and it's been a big hit, setting sales records for Nintendo hardware. One of the selling points is that it's a hybrid system, allowing you to play at home on a TV or on the go with the tablet-like screen and controllers. Don't expect Sony to imitate that setup for any new gaming hardware it might be working on, however.

PlayStation gaming boss Andrew House told Bloomberg that, from Sony's perspective, a hybrid-style gaming system does not represent a "huge market opportunity" outside of Japan and Asia.

"The folks at Nintendo have their strategy and that's great," House said. "We remain focused around a highly connected gaming experience and also coupled with having a great range of other entertainment experiences so you can reach multiple people on the big screen in the household."

The interview also covered dedicated handheld gaming devices like the PlayStation Vita. House said the system didn't do all that great outside of Japan and Asia, due in part to the rise in smartphones. This is to say, it sounds like a PlayStation Vita successor is unlikely to happen, though nothing has been ruled out.

"The Vita experience was that outside of Japan and Asia, there was not a huge demand," House explained. "The lifestyle shift toward the dominance of smartphones as the single key device that is always with you, was the determining factor."

Sony is definitely committed to smartphone games. Recently, the company created a subsidiary called ForwardWorks to make smartphone games for iOS and Android.

So many delusions and butt-hurt comments from Sony over their failing portable market when they themselves were to blame. Last time I checked, Nintendo wasn't having any trouble selling portables outside of Asia.

So basically every Japanese/Korean gamer for the next couple years will be buying and playing on the Switch. The handheld market dominates in Asia and now Nintendo is the only game in town. Yea, tales of Nintendo's demise were grossly exaggerated.

"We remain focused around a highly connected gaming experience and also coupled with having a great range of other entertainment experiences so you can reach multiple people on the big screen in the household."

Then there’s the market by the hundreds of thousands who’re more less interested in this, which is why the Switch/3DS has been such a success despite its shortcomings.

Consoles, as well as TVs are only more appealing to those who do nothing else but stay home all day or just work your typical 9-5…even those type can benefit from having a portable device, whether its just to get away from their unhappy marriage or evil kids that are hogging up the TV, etc. Mobility & convenience will always be the way of the future, but Sony can enjoy its console sales in the meantime.

Honestly though while the Vita hasn't gotten many games, there are still several jewels on the system plus you can play some really old games like the PS Final Fantasies which are good to play on the go. Sucks that it hasn't gotten any support at all, but I do enjoy playing it alongside my 3ds.

@soliaired50: A PS Vita 2 with an upgrade specs and somehow the same or similar architecture and devkit as the ps4 or ps5 just so it can handle all the beautiful indie games there are in the store NOWWWW we would talk. I think i would feel better if i could play Journey, Axiom Verge, Guacamelee!, Resogun, Dino Frontier, Hotline Miami you name it, On the GO?? Tha would be a dream come true.

Love my PS Vita as is. It's smaller, battery lasts longer and functions as remote play for PS4. I'd say Sony has it covered right now even with limited new releases.

What they really mean is, We don't need to because we are winning the console war at the moment, If the switch was to beat the PS4 by the end of gen, the PS5 will likely be a hybrid as well.

Lack of support and expensive proprietary accessories. I love PS but I was let down by Vita, for sure.

And give Nintendo their due--they're kicking ass!

@juninhotorres: search in youtube about "japanese commercials" there are a few good channels about that and then see how many cellphone games are in japanese market. I think sony made some mistakes with the vita but most of all failure is in the lack of third party support, and thats not sony's fault. Thats why the switch is successful, Nintendo give to the asian consumers what they want: a simple handheld with simple games just as the cellphones.

@KiriharaZro: Sony themselves didn't support the Vita appropriately. don't get me wrong, I love the system. we have two at home (my husband's and mine) but we there aren't enough great games to play. I don't necessarily mean AAA games or multiplats but great experiences in general. games built for the system making use of its capabilities and features. and I do think Sony should be spearheading that. but they didn't.

most of the time we use it to play old or mobile-esque games. I love JRPGs but I find it missing even in this regard.

as a side note, I really don't think Switch's success derives from being "a simple handheld with simple games just as the cellphones". the system's first and greatest hit so far is a GOTY contender.

@juninhotorres: yeah but in Asia the Switch is selling more like a handheld than a home console, thats why the article focuses in the sony´s answer about the Switch success. If you say that the greatest hits are Zelda and Mario games, well, there´s always be like that talking about Nintendo, and we can say the same about Vita´s hits like Uncharted Golden Abyss, Gravity Rush, Tearaway, Killzone Mercenary, Dragons Crown for say some.

I hate playing games on my smartphone or my tablet, the reason I skipped the PS Vita was because Sony insisted on making Vita owners buy their expensive proprietary memory cards to save everything outside of the vita's small internal memory.

Sony, the main reason why the Vita failed was not from smartphones, it was from your poor marketing, overpriced storage, your lack of support for the system, and there being a cheaper option out there with more games than the Vita. Just admit you messed up with the Vita, and Nintendo curb stomped it with the 3DS. Even Nintendo admitted they messed up with the Wii U.

It wasn't just the rise of smartphones. The main reasons the vita failed was because of sonys ridiculously priced memory cards and because Sony stopped making games for it.

This guy realizes what many of us realize..........the Switch is really a handheld you can play on your tv. Not a true console. He also realizes it is a very good handheld and to go up against it is futile. Don't be greedy. Let Nintendo have the handheld market......you take the rest and leave the scraps for Microsoft.

"The interview also covered dedicated handheld gaming devices like the PlayStation Vita. House said the system didn't do all that great outside of Japan and Asia, due in part to the rise in smartphones."

Nintendo have seemingly coped with their handhelds before and after mobiles were around you only have to look at the game boy?

The vita does have some fantastic games like kill zone, gravity rush or uncharted, not forgetting most wanted, showcasing that with some minor tweaks it can perform closely to the ps3 standard. MK is another example of this.

I bought one on day one release and was blown away by uncharted, then it went quiet for a while and i hate jrpg's especially japanese ones, so it didn't get much attention with the exception of one price pirate wars.

Then FEZ was available, with more indie games to follow like axiom verge and sine mora and some hope was restored for the vita.

However the only major drawback i found is the incredibly stupid overpriced memory cards and some games highly priced.

Nintendo proved they can still cut it with the switch, in my opinion a great idea and now with Doom and GTA on the horizon to take with you, not forgetting the already great Nintendo titles, Sony simply wont take the risk, they already know how strong Nintendo are in the hand held market, then again they already have been for years!!!

There is no demand? it is the first time I see a real professional showing that he knows nothing about the market. even I work at medium size developer wouldn't say something so stupid. demand is there, if you make good games. blaming it on phones isn't a very smart statement.

Thank you. Don't. The online multiplayer system of Nintendo Switch is atrocious. Just let Nintendo do Nintendo, you do you. That way the consumers can get what they want from the companies that do what they are good at.

Sony loves to blame smartphones for the Vita's failure but that's only sort of true. Yes, phone games have definitely been taking sales away from the handheld market, but the handheld market is still thriving (Nintendo says hi.) Most of the Vita's problems are their own fault in a combination of minimal support, poor marketing, and bafflingly expensive proprietary memory cards.

Historically, Nintendo is the only one who really understands handhelds as a concept. Everyone else, from the Game Gear to the Vita, tried to market portable consoles, not understanding that while traveling, most people don't want portable consoles. They want handhelds. Even the Switch probably has people playing different games in different modes (I know I use it that way.)

Sony started out with console type games like Uncharted and Assassin's Creed and when they didn't set the world on fire, just sort of threw their hands up and walked away. (Compare that to Nintendo, who after a similarly rocky 3DS launch, doubled down, released a ton of good games, and came away with something amazing.) Eventually the Vita did find it's niche as a JRPG, VN, anime, and indie game system; things very non-Nintendo that Sony should have marketed the hell out of. The fact that they didn't capitalize on it when they had the chance isn't the smartphone's fault.

The Vita is a really great system that had a lot of potential. It's been sad seeing Sony treat it so badly, and continuing to blame phones instead of owning up to the fact that it's failure if their own stupid fault.

@brightamethyst:
It's not all Sony's fault the Vita failed outside of Asia/Japan. Poor marketing and expensive proprietary memory cards were all Sony's fault, but the other reasons weren't really Sony's fault. Western third party developers have almost no interest in developing games for dedicated handhelds, although Japanese third party developers did fill in that void for the Vita.

Sony did attempt to support the Vita near the beginning of its life cycle, but Sony fans aren't like Nintendo fans who will eat up almost all games they put out. Nintendo can basically support its own systems using their IPs alone because Nintendo owns some of the biggest IPs in video games and legions of fans who are passionate enough to eat up almost everything they release. Sony does have some notable IPs of its own, but they pale in comparison to Nintendo's line-up. Plus, Sony fans don't have the same kind of passion for Sony's games that Nintendo fans have for Nintendo games.

"We remain focused on a highly connected gaming experience" = "We enjoy the risk-free money we're getting from paid online."

"coupled with having other entertainment experiences on the big screen" = Like what, movies? How typical.

So, they just admitted that their strategy has nothing to do with video games. I hope they'll reconsider, because some friendly competition in the gaming world is always good for us. I suppose it's unfair when you're up against Nintendo at its best, but I didn't realize the situation was so dire for Sony that they'd willingly let Nintendo go unchallenged.

In other words, for Sony, the only winning move is not to play. What a strange game.

I've always loathed smartphone gaming. More especially their Stores. Most hated is lack of physical controls.

Then I thought about it. We could have a Vita 2, and it would be great. As great as the PS4 ecosystem in fact.

How? It's this simple:

1. Sony unlocks remote play for all smartphones. It's exclusive to Sony's Xperia line and nobody has a God damn Sony phone. Everyone has iPhones and Samsung or other Androids. I had my S7 rooted and went through a nightmare to get it to work but after an update killed it I was done. Simply by making remote play accessible across iOS and Android devices we can Bluetooth our DS4s to our phones and bam, your entire PS4 library on your phone.

2. Find a way to make your software work on phones. Rockstar did it, yoibcan too. Rather than invest millions in hardware research, why not invest it in others software? Too proud? Look at when Nintendo dropped their ego and made Pokemon and Mario for iOS and Android and made a killing. If Sony and Microsoft just sucked it up and admitted their defeat to the smartphone industry and made their developers make games with smartphone architecture they'd all make more money. Developers always bitch about the Vita not being worth it because of a small user base, well then why not actually create some God damn actual games on a platform that will never go away and has BILLIONS of users?!

3. Force AAA developers to put their games on smartphones with dedicated pad support. The smartphone market is only diarrhea because the entire games industry is secretive and stubborn and oldminded and unwilling to cooperate with smartphone developers in creating new software that's able to be ported to phones. If you're telling me something like the iPhone X which is $1000 can't run Fallout 3 what's the point of these devices that are so-called killing the mobile market according to House?

@nikolistary: I have a sony xperia z5 I like it cause it doesn't crack or break easily if I accidentally drop it from chest height. I've tested the remote play feature and bluetooth my PS4 controller its really good, I just need one of them clips to attach the controller to the phone. Basically if you leave your PS4 on standby at home you should be able to connect to your PS4 over wifi. I think there is a cracked remote play app out there that works on other android devices tbh.

@nikolistary: I always wondered why they don't allow Smartphones to function as console-like devices. Hook them into a TV, plug in a controller via a micro USB, and game on. They probably can already do that and I just don't know (I never use mine). As it is, the Apple a11 roughly matches an Xbox 360 for specs. One generation behind isn't bad especially given it's a phone we're talking about.

As easy as it is to gloss over House’s remarks as just being “sour grapes” (-House, Ninja? Like… Dr. House?-) there is a ring of truth in what he is saying.

Nintendo has been associated over the last 10 to 15 years specifically as bringing new and innovative forms of hardware to the videogaming market. This is quite evident when one looks at the technological innovation they have brought to the table in the form of hardware like the Wii, Wii-U, and now the Switch. That’s not to say all those ideas have translated into major financial/critical success but it just goes to show that Nintendo for whatever reason (maybe limiting graphical power?) has continuously been at the forefront of more how shall we say “unique” forms of entertainment/hardware in the videogaming world.

While Microsoft and Sony no doubt could play the same game (no pun intended.) I think they both realize that taking a risk on something that they know isn’t as clear cut as the world they both currently inhabit isn’t exactly a smart gamble. Some would say that this is part of the reason the Vita is where it is today. Perhaps things would have been different for the Vita if it had the same amount of effort that Nintendo put into the release of the Switch or even the level of care and emphasis Sony put into the release of the PS3 or PS4.

Then again, maybe it wouldn't have.
