PlayStation 4 Controller Now Works Wirelessly With PlayStation 3

The DualShock 4 is now compatible without a wire with the last-gen system, although there are still some limitations.

When the PlayStation 4 launched last November, Sony made the DualShock 4 controller compatible with the PlayStation 3 if it is plugged in via USB charge cable. With recently-released update 4.60 to the PS3, you can now use a DualShock 4 wirelessly to control PS3 games. A post on Reddit details the new feature, which simply requires you to pair a PS4 controller with the PS3 using Bluetooth.

Unfortunately, the PlayStation button, vibration, and Sixaxis tilt controls still do not work. But you can now turn on the PS3 using the DualShock 4's PS button, which was not possible before.

You can see the step-by-step guide to pairing a DualShock 4 with a PS3 below.

  1. Select "Manage Bluetooth Devices" under "Accessory Settings" in the PS3 settings menu.
  2. Select "Register New Device," then start the PS3's bluetooth scanning.
  3. While it's scanning, press and hold the share and PS buttons on the DualShock 4 at the same time until the light bar starts blinking.
  4. The PS3 should then detect the controller, which will appear as "Wireless Controller.'
  5. Select the controller and complete the pairing.

This will not turn on both a PS3 and PS4 simultaneously if the consoles are close together. The controller must be re-paired with the PS4 before it can be used.

Will you use the DualShock 4 for your old PS3 games? Or will you stick with the DualShock 3 for all your PS3 gameplay? Let us know in the comments!

I'll keep using my only Dual Shock 3 and hope it won't break but it's reassuring to know I can use my Dual Shock 4 with it in case the former breaks.

I still hate the placement of the start and select buttons. They should've ditched the damn touch pad, too. And the triggers STILL aren't right.

Handy if you need another controller for multiplayer i suppose but don't particularly feel like forking out €60/$60 for a new one.

I wonder if Microsoft will do something similar with the Xbox One controller? we shall see.

As soon as they implement vibration and sixaxis, I'm pretty much going to permanently retire my PS3 controller. Well played Sony.

I just tried this. The PS4 controller works fine on the PS menu but as soon as I load up GTA V it stops working. Maybe some teething problems?

Personally I would rather see it the other way round. I know the DS3 is lacking the touchpad, but you can get away with it on most games (though this means Sony admitting the touch pad isn't essential, so fat chance of seeing that happen!).

Whilst on the subject, it would be nice to see the bluray remote to become compatible with the PS4... though realistically I doubt that'll ever happen as well

Good start, but I'll be happier when I can use my perfectly good Ps3 fight stick with my Ps4.

I'm unable to get my DS4 controller to work wirelessly with my PS3. I manged to register my DS4 on my PS3 just fine, but after 3 seconds the DS4 loses connection with my PS3. Pressing the PS button on my DS4 activates the controller, but once again, I only have control for about 3 seconds before losing connection. Does anyone know why this is happening?

My PS3 controller goes haywire sometimes while playing as if the buttons are stuck from inside. Might just buy a PS4 controller & be future proof until I get the PS4 in a years time.

Does the chicken dance... The one thing I didn't totally like about ps3 was the controller, preferred the xbox one on my PC.

But I heart the PS4 controller - tight and fits like a glove. Hopefully it works with Dark Souls 2.

For some reason, I prefer Dualshock3 over 4. Maybe my hands are too small? I will be 100% ok with Dualshock3 with replaced R2/L2 triggers.

Yet it still doesn't work "wired" with the PS4 which i find baffling.

For those who don't know (because very few seem too) the DS4 is only charging with the USB cable on PS4 (yet works wired on PC and PS3) and sends no data via USB to the PS4, always wireless, laggy and i get interference all the time, in fact there's a huge thread on the Sony forum about it.

Just add USB "wired" mode to the PS4 sony, why on earth wouldn't you allow this ?

@grymor90 @motopramaus It's not sending data through the cable Einstein, it's only charging the controller. The controller is still working over bluetooth with or without the cable.............did you even read my post or just jump in a bit early ?

Plug in the cable, go to settings - devices and turn off the controllers bluetooth........... won't work. Sony have already confirmed it's wireless only, there's a whole community trying to resolve this issue. Head over to ControllerMax.

PC gamers never use wireless keyboards or mice, all high end PC peripherals are wired.

This is awesome, from the moment I grabbed my DS4 for the 1st time I felt it as a part of myself. It's so comfortable I don't want to use any other controller. Great job Sony I trust you'll continue to work for us gamers!

Hey Sony!! We don't need new controller on last-gen system. we Need last-gen system functionality on New-gen!!! we want ALL the ps3 features on the ps4. we want to customize, we want to watch videos, we want to store our own content. so stop trying to feed us some small stuff just to pretend you're doing something for us. Do something really meaningful to us!!

I don't have a PS3 anymore, and I'm still waiting on the PS4, but I don't get it. Why would you want to use the PS4 controller with limited functionality and the hassle of syncing to the system you want to use when you could just keep using the PS3 controller you already own with full functionality?

Mind blown...

But once you've used it for a good session it's hard to side with another PlayStation gamepad. It really is that good. Highly recommended it over DS3.
