Pizza Place Overwhelmed By Five Nights at Freddy's Calls

The New Jersey restaurant Freddie's "is trapped in a sea of never-ending telephone calls, and it is hurting business."

A real-world pizza place in New Jersey is being overrun by calls from gamers asking if the restaurant has anything to do with the video game Five Nights at Freddy's. It doesn't.

Asbury Park Press (via Kotaku) reports that the pizza joint in question, Freddie's Restaurant and Pizzeria in Long Branch, is seeing its phone lines ring off the hook--but not always for pizza orders.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Pizza Place Overwhelmed By Five Nights at Freddy's Calls

"The calls are from children nationwide, who want to know if Freddie's is, in fact, Freddy's Fazbear Pizza, the setting for a popular online video game called Five Nights at Freddy's," the report said.

"Freddie's is trapped in a sea of never-ending telephone calls, and it is hurting business. The restaurant added phone lines. It shifted employees around to handle incoming calls," the report added. "And its regular customers have had trouble getting through to place their orders."

The restaurant opened in 1944 and continues to be family-run to this day.

Simply changing its number might be a bad idea for business. New Jersey Restaurant & Hospitality Association president Marilou Halvorsen said, "Think about much business would be lost" if Freddie's were to get a new number.

"That number has been in existence for so long, and then all of the sudden you change the number and people think you're out of business. It's not that easy. Hopefully, it will die down," Halvorsen said about the huge volume of non-order calls.

How many calls are actually being placed? More than you might think.

"I've never seen anything like this," said a waitress who has worked at Freddie's for 34 years. "You can get 200 calls in an hour. It's very annoying. You try to do your job, and you keep picking the phone up."

Freddie's has added new telephone lines to compensate for the huge influx in calls. Additionally, employees examine the caller ID in an attempt to get an idea who wants pizza and who wants to know about fictional animatronic bears.

This Five Nights at Freddy's problem isn't unique to Freddie's in New Jersey. A pizza place in Roseville, California--Fast Freddie's Pizza & Pasta--is also being inundated with calls about the video game, the report said.

For his part, Five Nights at Freddy's creator Scott Cawthon told the Asbury Park Press in an automated response, "Please do not call any phone numbers that you think may be associated with the game; there are NO phone numbers associated with the game or marketing; all locations are fictional."

Go to the Asbury Park Press to get the full story.

The first Five Nights at Freddy's debuted in August 2014 on PC and has since been ported to iOS. Three sequels have been released since, while spinoff Five Nights at Freddy's World came out in January this year. However, it was removed from sale after complaints that it had been released too early and felt unfinished.

A new game, Sister Location, is due out this fall. You can watch an ultra-creepy trailer for it here.

Every time something like this comes up, I can't help but feel embarrassed that this country arguably rules the world.

@monkeyman22xx: Chinese kids (and adults) are indeed stupid. But not as stupid as americans. Chinas lower education system is much better these days.

What would changing their number do? It's not the number that's the problem. It's the name. So changing the number would help for maybe 5 seconds while people Google the new number. Common sense would say, if it's not a local call, send it to voice mail. I doubt they deliver pizzas all over the globe.

I see a lot of people posting "this will be good for business with all this publicity", but ironically, fail to remember that their main problem is getting phone calls for orders because of these dumb kids. How is this good publicity when they can't even GET the phone calls from the new customers seeing this news story when they're dealing with FNAF fans?

Maybe re-direct out of area or state calls to a voice mail system?

@beantownsean: Heck, even out of area code calls, as pizza places don't deliver more than a few miles usually.

@beantownsean: So if you live next door and just happen to have an out-of-state cell phone number you can't place an order via phone. And how would you re-route a call based off an area code?

@monkeyman22xx:

I suspect the phone company can handle a simple re-route based on area code. And yes, forcing out of state calls to voicemail would be better than the current situation. A simple screening message up front stating they are not affiliated with "Five Nights at Freddy's" followed by an option to speak with someone still gets your order in.

The number of people with out of state cell phones being re-routed would be far less than the influx useless calls the business is receiving. A little inconvenience on your end would likely get you speaking with a live person sooner since they wouldn't have to field a plethora of bogus calls.

An imperfect solution for an imperfect world.

Part of me actually feels kinda bad for the guy, but at the same time, it's giving his restaurant a lot of attention, so maybe it's not the worst thing that could happen. It may draw in more customers due to the buzz around the place.

Can people not use the internet these days to find this question out or I don't know at least contact the man who made it rather than the pizza place? The dev needs to make an announcement stating that it isn't the setting for the game so that everyone can be done with it(Though I would assume not everybody would hear of it, but just something to at least lessen these calls).

you didn't do your research (i.e. actually READING the article itself lmao) but you expect these kids to research?

@domo4th: You do know what type of site you are on right(There are plenty of those kids who are on gaming sites and you can bet your ass many including GS for sure would pick up a statement like that. Of which they did yet it was performed in a poor manner)? Use your head for a second, on Steam there is a follow function for games that pops up any sort of news the dev posts. Then there is also the news feed straight underneath the game itself on Steam, if you would reads my post "Though I would assume not everybody would hear of it, but just something to at least lessen these calls" then you would understand that some would likely see it given it is so simple to do so. You don't have to research something to hear about it, just look at all the idiots who follow candidates and the like without ever watching a political program or following the news other than a passing glance(Not generalizing all, but there are those for both sides). Fyi I did read it, I just happened to miss where it said creator and just read it as someone related to the pizza place.

@Smosh150: You request that the dev release a statement saying the setting is fictionnal, but fail to see that the article mentions he already did. You ask why people can't figure out that the setting of the video game is fake without bothering the pizza place. Hmmm, I wonder.....

@postal1248: I did miss the creator bit, regardless where he posted that statement makes no sense whatsoever. The statement should be apart of both the store pages and posted to news feeds like in Steam where it would pop up for those who follow the game and show at the top of the feed itself(I mean there can be a statement saying this not based on any real location or something like that on the page itself). I do get that many are still prank calls, my post was about lessening the amount of them(Those who are actually ignorant and may have a chance of seeing it on Steam or the like).

@Smosh150: Yeah I get what you're saying. I was just being a douche. Telling the local paper that the setting is fictional doesn't help. I don't get why people would think it's real anyways. Must be prank calls.

@postal1248: Yea must be, don't see the attraction with this prank call. I mean if you want to prank then prank people like Ghost on True Capitalist Radio(I know he is no longer around, just was saying), actually is entertaining rather then stupid for stupids sake.

It might be a prank call thing. I looked up Freddies Prank Calls on youtube and there are a lot of hits, but they're all from a year ago so I don't know. Just a guess.

You know kids these days and their flash prank call mobs.
