Pixar getting a Kinect game

Microsoft's family focus sees fan-favorite Pixar characters star in minigame collection; Double Fine developing new kid-friendly experience.

Microsoft's push to reach a wider swath of gamers with Kinect was reaffirmed today with the announcement of several new kid-oriented projects.

Toy Story 3 is just one of the Pixar properties to be featured in an upcoming Kinect game.
Toy Story 3 is just one of the Pixar properties to be featured in an upcoming Kinect game.

Looking to broaden its family portfolio, Microsoft today announced a Pixar game being developed under the codename "Rush." This collaboration with Disney will let players scan themselves into the settings of popular Pixar films, including The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Up, Toy Story 3, and Cars 2. Gameplay will center around completing time-based challenges, with a release set for spring 2012.

Once Upon a Monster developer Double Fine Productions is taking a second shot at working with the motion-sensing camera, as Microsoft announced today that Tim Schafer and company are at work on another kid-friendly release called Double Fine Happy Action Theater. Characterized as a series of toys, the Xbox Live holiday release will feature 18 different experiences with which to interact, with no rules or specific goals.

The Xbox 360 maker also revealed a set of new collaborations with Sesame Workshop and National Geographic. The first project, Kinect Sesame Street TV, will deliver a whole season of the popular kids program constructed specifically for interactivity through the Kinect. Portions of the current Sesame Street season and archive will also be accessible.

A second Sesame Workshop collaboration codenamed "Project Columbia" will let kids interact with and immerse themselves in stories with the goal of promoting comprehension. Finally, the National Geographic alliance will see Kinect Nat Geo TV offered on the console.

At first I was like: "Oh great, ANOTHER Kinect game that's just a hodgepodge of minigames. Haven't seen that before!" I IMMEDIATELY shut up when I saw that it was being made by Double Fine. Suddenly, there's a light at the end of the tunnel. =)

@Malaphisis 1. You know pixar doesn't actally make games, and Double Fine is making one using it's license. And they definately don't make Final Fantasy games. @. That was alot of words and comments just to show that you are pissed off at nothing

I think this is actually a smart move (LOL) on the part of MS. I think perhaps they are starting to realize that the majority of mature/core gamers want nothing to do with motion gimmicks interfering with their games & so they are targeting a younger, less critical demographic who will most likely be more accepting of the technology. Nothing wrong with trying to save face IMO. They may actually move (YAArgHH) a few more Kinects this way.........

Toy Story has pretty amazing potential, I wish they would put all the Pixar characters in one Pixar game, that would be awesome. They could make an entire new storyline out of it honestly, kind of like Kingdom Hearts stuff.

@moviequest14 Yes I know you don't think there are actually gaming Gods. That still doesn't make it sarcasm. There was nothing ironic about what you were saying. You just said it to make fun of him. There was no hidden allusion to what you were saying.

@soothsayer42 well put it this way... MS already has sold enough xbox 360 for this generation to be happy now they want to sell more kinects to mare more money. So since a lot of 3rd party developers are making really good games they probably feel they don't need to invest much money into making exclusive games to make the higher profit. Instead they're investing in kinect and paying extra money to developers so xbox players could get DLC early. This seems to be working really well for them so Sony might try to follow up on it too and expand the move. Little by little less and less fully developed games are going to be made.

What a waste, somebody step up at pixar and tell them you want to make an action adventure/rpg or something. I'm not a huge pixar fan but these dudes gotta know that wii and motion games suck. everyone i know that has a wii used it for a weekend or two playing the sport game that came with it. kinects are a complete waste as well, this project is screwed already. some moron with a degree in marketing is most likely spearheading this project and they should not even be in that position. they should require marketing people in the gaming business to actually know sometihng about games. just remake ff7 you idiot stupid people stop making crap games

I wouldn't mind playing a game based on Pixar's films but I'd rather play an adventure or RPG and definitely not a Kinect game.... Lego Pixar anyone??

@Tremblay343 : Actually it was, trust me when I say ''Last time I checked the gaming gods didn't come down to earth and give you (or anyone for that matter) the right to say whether a game/gamer qualifies to your own standard of hardcore or not.'' and literally think that there are actually ''gaming gods'' then I am probably not even smart enough to even get on a computer..much less type all this out.

I bought the kinect a few months ago because I needed a new xbox (I had a really old 360). Bought a couple of the games and it was fun for maybe one weekend. Now it's just collecting dust. I just don't play the type of games that they have for the kinect right now. I like more action/rpg/sports type games. I really wish they could come up with something good in those genres although I'm really doubtful that the kinect is good enough to work in those type games from what I've seen so far. That's probably why nothing but these family/fun type games are out there. The motion sensing isn't fast or exact enough to swing a weapon or be able to see an intricate hand motion that would initiate a magic spell. Man, would that be cool though.....

Considering that Kinect games simply do not sell, Double Fine are really setting themselves up for a big fall by continuing to support the ailing platform.

Pixar getting a Kinect game = Lame But Pixar making a Kinect game? Now that would be awesome. Although they'd probably have to team up with some game developer, as I doubt they're very familiar with coding for consoles and PC games.

I bought PS Move when it came out, and I like it but boy am I glad that Sony is not shoving all these move games in my face the way MS is doing with Kinect. MS is abandoning there core gamer audience.

Do you mean, " Kinect getting a Pixar game?" . The other way sounds like Microsoft is giving a kinect to Pixar, which I doubt is accurate.

There's really nothing wrong with making games for kids, but why did they market the Kinect to adults then? Adults have Kinects, too, game developers. And we have more money than kids. We want fighting games. Please, please take our money.

Happy action theatre was literally made for children and drunk people. There were a lot of bugs they found when developing the sesame street game, so double fine turned those weird kinect glitches into a game. Tim said he wanted to make a party game where anyone could just walk up and do something. Something that didn't involve organizing and set-up, it could just be on. The game switched between mini-games automatically after a certain time or when the "objective" is finished. When I first saw this game all I could think was "wtf"...but you know who are a lot like children? Drunk people. And then Tim Schafer's vision became clear to me. Plus I find it hilarious that an entire team hinged off of finding and exploiting the annoying bugs found when making a different game. I love games where half the fun is trying to break them. Maybe that's why I like dark souls so much...

Happy Action Theater looks like a toy. I mean, just a cool, mindless toy, for children to play with. In that regard, I don't think it can fail. It might not hold appeal for older audiences, but I think it'll be a great fit for children; especially if the family has a Kinect anyway.

Too bad Double Fine doesn't make games for us adults anymore. But its good for the kids that they get some quality software from a good developer. If only I could have more games like Grim Fandango, Psychonuats, and Brutal Legend.

I have never been a fan of Kinect, but hey, at least Microsoft are keeping the target demographic they first set out with... good family fun. That is what Kinect is. I would never buy one for myself, but I would defiantly buy one as a Christmas present for my other family members who don't play games as much.

@amroto : With all due respect also to you...who the #### are you to tell someone whether they are hardcore or not? Last time I checked the gaming gods didn't come down to earth and give you (or anyone for that matter) the right to say whether a game/gamer qualifies to your own standard of hardcore or not.I will tell you this much, you don't see people considering themselves the only hardcore movie watchers because they watch horror or the only hardcore music listeners because they listen to rap.I have seen people spend 5 times the time playing wii games that are much more dedicated than those that spend 5 minutes playing 360 yet are supposedly ''hardcore'' to that broken logic.

I find it kind of funny how for the wii's life-span it has mainly been appealing to ''the casual audience'' and 360/ps3 have been appealing to ''the hardcore audience'' (though I don't agree with those stereotypes) but now both Sony and MS are making noticeable effort to appeal to the more casual audience while Nintendo is trying to aim at the hardcore audience with the wii-u.

@SolidTy -- I agree with the non-impressive kinect games so far, but I can't be the only one who thinks that Happy Action Theater looks freaking awesome! It may not be a game per-se but it's looks like a lot of fun; the kind of stuff I've been expecting from kinect since it launched.

@Rotuhiiri - Aahh the 'hard-core' gamer...the world revolves around you doesn't it! When you (finally) grow up you might realise that little kids have a right to be included in gaming too. There's nothing quite like the excited look on my 3 year old daugthers face when she was interacting with Elmo in Sesame Street Once Upon a Monster. I love gaming and if I can introduce my kids to gaming by playing games like this bring it on. If you don't like your 360 anymore, sell it mate, but quit whinig and complaining about other demographics of gamers being catered to other than yours. Well done Double Fine, me & my kids love the Seame Street game & would jump at the chance to play similar game set in the Pixar universe.

@Rotuhiiri: with all do respect, i think playing the Wii more than playing the xbox 360 means that u're not fond of hardcore games as xbox 360 is waaay better in such fields for example u have so many titles like gears of war 3, batman arkham city, L.A Noire and many other titles as well as all the titles that have been released since the official release of the kinect that are countless...so i guess u choosing yr main console now as the Wii doesn't have to do anything with the kinect, because if u don't like the kinect don't play with it,just head for the main titles.
