PC Game of the Year 2013 Winner

The path less traveled.

Who would have thought that Blizzard Entertainment, the uber-successful creator of the world's most revered action role-playing games, would be out-Diablo'd? A year after Diablo III was released, developer Grinding Gear Games created a dark and oppressive clickfest that seemingly rose from the ashes of Diablo II. After a notably long beta period, Path of Exile was released to great acclaim in 2013--yet, somehow, doesn't cost a penny to download, play, and love.

So yes, it's a wonder that Path of Exile is free, though you can certainly toss some cash the developer’s way by buying unnecessary cosmetic enhancements. But Path of Exile’s greatness has little to do with its price, or lack thereof, but is instead a result of its ridiculously complex skill tree, exciting action, and moody atmosphere. At first, the adventure hews closely to its obvious inspiration, but this familiarity is merely a stepping stone that allows Path of Exile to find its footing. Once it's clear you are on rock-solid ground, the game establishes an identity all its own--an identity that makes Path of Exile a worthy winner of GameSpot's award for 2013 PC game of the year.

I can't believe Bioshock Infinite was even considered.

Bioshock Infinite is a crap game developed by Levine, your typical "enlightened" liberal with a 6th grade understanding of the world, who gets his info from Michael Moore and Comedy Central.

He should have just named it, " I hate white people". At least that would have been honest.

When these devs get back to making games instead of trying to push their childish view of the world on everyone, maybe games like Path of Exile won't stand out so much. They'll just be your average good game, like it used to be.

<< LINK REMOVED >> What ever happened to gaming? A good plot is good and all but it seems like so many developers are more concerned about plot than the actual mechanics that make a traditionally good game. Why not just make a movie?

Very well deserved. I typically binge on RPG's and get bored of them. I've been playing this since closed beta and haven't been bored since. This is the longest that an RPG has held my attention since D2 LOD.

This isn't an attack. That being said, I tried three times to get into this game. I played a couple hours each time after reading one amazing review after another about it and I just could not get excited or interested in this game. I found myself very disinterested in the world, the characters and I wasn't a big fan of the game play in general. I honestly prefer Torchlight and Diablo 3 over this game, simply because I am drawn in and attracted to those experiences. This one is truly a head-scratcher, but I do realize that many people love this game and many reviewers absolutely rave about it. I just can't seem to grasp the attraction to it.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's the true sequel to diablo 2. There is actual depth here and you can make a truly crazy and unique character. Not to mention the unique skill system and lack of an AH (thank god). You actually have to play this game or trade in-game currency with other players if you want items, not just buying the best gear for $10 on the AH.

It's funny that this tiny game made by a bunch of dudes from New Zealand is less p2w than a flagship game from one of the biggest companies in the world.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I agree but i prefer having all these ARPGs and play at least 50hs+ to give any oppinion about them. Although this game appeal for its complexity, its has no story driven experience for most gamers nor graphic appeal. But it deserves it more than the other games on the list. I also like D3 over it... because Im tired of too much complexity and I play to relax, so D3 has its colors to please my eyes and lore to keep me interested. Dont give up on PoE, stay playing it at least for 50+hs and maybe you will find it better than D3 or Torchlight or equally anjoyable! ;)

<< LINK REMOVED >> Definitely not the best ARPG ever created by a long shot. I seriously got bored in act 2 HC and just stopped. The game is just stiff. When I look and the fluidity and changes coming to D3: RoS I can't help but gravitate towards that. Maybe with a second release and more production can the PoE creators get everything right. Dota 2 on the other hand has about 400 hrs on my record (although recently getting bored but play from time to time). I think Dota is very competitive and fun.

@Katra @min64

Its not like we have hundreds of ARPG on the market. There are very few actually. So whats better than PoE? Torchlight 2? D3? One game is only good because of mods and the other is a complete failure of a D2 sequel.

Are we going to go retro and talk about Titan Quest with its campaign you play once lol? or Diablo 2 with its insane amount of online issues... or maybe Nox? Dungeon Siege? Divine Divinity? Bards Tale? Seriously PoE is the best ARPG out right now. even with its issues. I couldn't care less if you didnt like it, You played a game for 12 hours... probably couldnt get out of act 2 and you want to dismiss PoE? uh huh...

Loot 2.0, itemization not revolving around AH, and the paragon attribute system may just save the series though. I'm certainly keeping my eye on RoS.

PoE is an incredible game. The more you play it, the more you realize how little you understand it. the mechanics are so incredibly complicated. For all the people who think the game is too shallow, boring, easy, etc. Play on Hardcore, where the economy isn't fucked up and where you have to actually design a character from start to finish rather than just making a glass cannon.

@jimdove2 Generic shooter yes but no one will ever talk about Bioshock's story. I loved every second of it. The introduction to the world with its weird religious sentiments and then the slow piecing together of the different parts.

It took me 18 hours to complete. Some people say they struggled to make it last 5. Maybe you just don't let it all sink in enough by just blasting through everything.

I mean if you managed to get through that fair place in the intro without trying all of the games, and talking to all the people and listening to conversations and things then I'm sorry you wasted the game.

Still.. Goes to show you that Bioshock Infinite was developed for consoles because it had the console gameplay. Regenerating shield, sprinburst, iron sights, weaponlimit and cutscenes/unable to move scenes.

Bioshock 1 was fastpaced and all. Just how PC game should be. None of these crap console mechanics.

Well GGG must be doing something right. I'm playing it quite actively since last May (closed beta) and have sunk more than 400$ into cosmetics, which rather just feels like showing my support for a game, as a reward to the developers and as an insurance that they will continue to churn out content as fast as they do now. With bi-weekly patches that often introduce new skills or items that make new builds possible, daily race events and the 4 month leagues with challenges, I can hardly keep up. I can see playing this for as long as I played D II and I played that until earlier this year before it finally felt too dated and clunky in comparison to PoE.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Yeah. Well, how can I explain...kinda like playing an MMO even if you don't really feel like it...idk, I do it for the company (friends) not because of the sheer excellence of the game. That said, the game is enjoyable, and I spent many an evening grinding...enjoyable enough that I kept trying to achieve some goals that I set for myself.

But, even after persevering for so long, seeing how a lot of end-game success comes purely from massive RNG or the need for trading if you want to be decently geared I, absolutely loathe trading in POE)...well, that was kinda it. Also, desync.

I can see that for some, the game can be the bees' knees, but not for me. Also, the game doesn't really have anything that innovative or progressive that wasn't seen before (keep in mind I play games since commodore) and it regressed in some other aspects. Although, POE beeing F2P game, with no microtransactions that give you P2W (inventory being only mandatory item for me, which is cheap enough) it's a very very good game...but, I've never been wooow, this is amazing, more games should have this.

Heh, I don't think I adequately explained, writing this in a hurry (at work atm), but will have to do :P

"Who would have thought that Blizzard Entertainment, the uber-successful creator of the world's most revered action role-playing games, would be out-Diablo'd?"

Well, to be fair, about 90% of the people involved with making Diablo 1 and 2 left Blizzard many years ago, and had nothing to do with Diablo 3, which was made by the guys who made WoW.

But anyway, PoE is amazing, and truly deserves the accolades. Congrats, GGG. You more than earned it.

Also, when was that footage that appears in the first couple seconds of the video from? I've been in the PoE beta since damn near two years ago, and I never saw the HUD look like that. Must be from waaaaaay back.
