PAX '07: Japanese Gaming Culture 101

Panel addresses the distinct differences between Eastern and Western societal approaches to the interactive medium.

SEATTLE--With the launch of Nintendo's Wii and DS in the US, gaming has rapidly been garnering a widespread appeal--and acceptance--in US culture. However, despite America's newfound enthusiasm for the interactive medium, it pales in comparison to gaming in Japan, where games are more a lifestyle choice than just a hobby. The verve with which the Japanese approach gaming is as foreign as their language to Americans, and at the last day of the Penny Arcade Expo, several resident experts took a look at this phenomenon.

Moderating the "Culture of Japanese Gaming" session and lending insight on the retail aspect of gaming in Japan was Nathan Paine, coowner of Seattle-based game import outlet Pink Godzilla. Also speaking at the panel were gaming journalist Dan Tochen on the Japanese arcade scene and Mike Norman on commercials for games in the Land of the Rising Sun. The panel also featured a special guest appearance by Koushi Kondou, president of Japanese tabletop role-playing game maker Bouken.

Paine opened the session by noting the drastic differences between retail stores in Japan and those in the US. As opposed to the lifeless, stark retail experiences that many Western gamers are familiar with, Paine said that the retail experience in Japan is often as exciting as actually playing the games. The primary reason for this is the massive appeal of retro gaming in Japan. In Den Den Town--a world-renowned shopping district in Osaka, Japan--Paine said that retailers go to great lengths to procure and stock rare and classic games, such as Radiant Silvergun on the Sega Saturn, because it enhances their reputation and helps them in the highly competitive market.

The approach is in stark contrast to American retailers, who have the opposite mentality of only catering to the latest and greatest games, said Paine. He went on to say that in Japan, you can be assured that all of the retro products you buy have gone through an extensive testing process, and are only made available in as pristine a condition as is possible. Retailers also know the value of rare games, and are more than willing to offer appropriate compensation for your trade-ins, as opposed to US retailers, who offer a mere fraction of the resale value.

Tochen then took over the panel to address arcade culture in Japan. Whereas the heyday of the American arcade died out in the '80s, Japanese arcades are a growing and vibrant industry. Last year alone, he noted, the Japanese arcade industry pulled in $7.5 billion, which is more than half of the US's total aggregate revenues in the gaming business. Nearly 40 percent of the Japanese gaming market revenues are from arcades, as opposed to a fraction of a percent in the US. Tochen also stated that a single play in a Japanese arcade is typically 100 yen ($0.86), with the more complex or involved games scaling up to around 200 yen ($1.72).

According to Tochen's research, there are more than 24,000 arcades in Japan. A sizable number, he noted, seeing as Japan is roughly the size of California. Further, each of these arcades average 30 games, and they're located in some of the most highly trafficked areas, such as near subway terminals. Subsequently, arcades are nearly always packed with people, with every machine filled and plenty of observers loitering around.

Mike Norman then discussed game ads in Japan. As opposed to the clinical approach to advertisement in the West, the Japanese launch into a full-fledged spectacle. To evidence this, Norman ran a montage of Japanese commercials that involved Segata Sanshiro, which translates to "You Must Play Sega Saturn." Sanshiro's antics included training on a near-constant basis to play the Saturn, as well as physically accosting those who are not playing the system.

Norman noted that this strategy simply would not be accepted in the US, especially the one where Segata beats a few grade school kids with their own baseball bats after they dared to emerge from their living rooms to engage in physical activity. Another strategy that would not work is the use of gaming icons to promote other products in Japan. He then ran a commercial filled with what appeared to be Dance Dance Revolution characters as they promoted their extremely well-fitting and leak-preventing feminine hygiene products.

Closing out the panel was a Q&A session with Koushi Kondou. Despitie several lost-in-translation moments, Kondou did lend interesting insight into why many Western games don't achieve the same magnitude of success in Japan. Referring specifically to Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto series, Kondou noted that these types of games are simply too dark for a Japanese audience. Kondou noted that even in the most violent Japanese games, there is typically always a moment where the two opposite sides stop beating on each other and receive a peaceful resolution. The problem, he said, was the lack of a peaceful resolution or a lightening of the mood. "Someone needs to apologize at the end," he said.

Perhaps the two best animes I've seen are Cowboy Bebop and Berserk (which sadly never had a final episode as far as I'm aware of). Berserk was so dark and sinister, and you didn't have the main villains apologizing or talking with their hate-filled foes. With anger in their hearts, no one minced words. Sadly though, I guess our dear friend would consider the latter too dark for the typical Japanese consumer. If only the people could get together and talk out their demonic differences.

Oh and SonicGod, not every game in the U.S. is Madden. Bioshock isn't, God of War isn't, Mass Effect isn't, and so on. I've never seen Madden or football players in any of my games, especially since I hate football games. There are a lot of really good products over here.

Someone needs to apologize at the end? This kind of irrationality is why I hate Japanese games. They just don't understand sometimes that there are some things you can't apologize for. Furthermore, really high quality bad guys DO NOT APOLOGIZE EVER! Mainly because it sounds silly, but also because apologies are wussy. I can't even imagine it. "I'm sorry I made you kill your family and turned you into a mutant, but would you kindly forgive me? I'm sorry little fella." Ugh... *sigh* I used to love Japanese games, cartoons, and the like when I was like 12. I hate to say it, but I'm so over them. Especially because every other bad guy gets a Shakespearian monologue when they die of "I'm sorry. I was corrupted, but now in my death I see my own evil and repent. Boo hoo hoo, now I'm a big blubbery wuss. *croak*"

I wish I could live in Japan, not just for the games. I like their culture in general. As for the peaceful endings in games.. sounds fine, but not all the time. People want variety.

Japan has a crappy taste in games. All they play is RPG games that somehow involve a samauri, magical powers, and a dragon. Japenese developers are also behind the ball on video games these days. Not trying to be racist or anything, but its the truth

"simply too dark for a Japanese audience". No ****. That's why we have Grand Theft Auto, and you guys have your softcore stuff. Really, alot of people couldn't give a ratsass about "And they lived happily ever after", and just simply want to blow the living hell out of the guy instead. Honestly, sometimes a happy ending. Fine. But I rather say "Cut the crap, I got a gun, and it ain't ment to make friends."

"Someone needs to apologize at the end,". Of course that makes sense i can see it it now. Cj apologizing to that dirty cop in the end. " i'm sorry this had to happen. Dirty officer" no it was my falt i was so stupid to kill your ma and corrupted your gang banging friends and made you go through hell in back just to kill me." Beautiful. There are games where a violent ending is alright. Yes it would be alright to have your "apologies" in the end but some games like rock star need to really stick to what they do because that's how they got so good in the first place. As for the arcades let us not forget "We" have the most "Fat" people in the world. Do Fat people want to stand at a arcade for several hours playing a arcade game while eating Cheese's. No, why because i'm average soon ( unless i get working) becaming fat and i say to myself if it's not on xbox live arcade then it ain't worth S**T. Hay us north americans still play some arcade games , yes we are some what all about the mainstream games. So what that's what keeps raising the bar. Don't look back but forward? No but should we change how we are ( fatness yes ) no. Are you happy Northy's are you happy if you are then there is nothing wrong with our gaming ways. If you find a problem then go out and make i game you think should be played.................... i should of just said "no way" other than all this crap..

Well, it's interesting really how our cultures and values differ. I guess what he means by "apologize in the end", he doesn't really mean just one person saying, "oops, I'm wrong, let's be friends", but more like how bad guys in Japanese games seem slightly more human. I mean, let's look at Gears of War and the badguy, Raam. You don't know anything about him except he's big, ugly, and killed Kim. Now, if you look at a lot of the badguys in Japanese games, like Big Boss in MGS, you can tell these people are human, sure evil, but people with emotions nonetheless. But sometimes, darker is better. Like I can't imagine the Locusts and humans making up and being happy or Master Chief letting the Covenant live. Some games need to be dark and moody to make them good.

Japanese arcades are awesome compared to any in the U.S. Sit down games? How cool is that? They want you to be comfortable while you're plunking down nearly a dollar a play. I've been to Japan three times and each time I spent a FORTUNE in the arcades. :D

I already knew alot of this, Americans prefer dark violent games while Japanese prefer Light and violent/peaceful games. So to sum it all up we like shooters and super violent sandbox games, and Japanese people like RPG's and Violent games with peaceful resolutions. I dunno how violent games can ever have peaceful resolutions but some people just have their own tastes.

"He went on to say that in Japan, you can be assured that all of the retro products you buy have gone through an extensive testing process, and are only made available in as pristine a condition as is possible. " A far cry from the "Bin full of every cartridge system" you find in Gamestation, the ONLY non independant place left that does retro. Goddamn i wish people took things more seriously over here, just because i want something in good condition doesnt mean im some kind of comic book collecting freak who obsesses over every tiny little thing, i just want my product in usable condition, be it new or second hand. And Radiant Silvergun, man any retailer who had that in stock would have my respect anyday, but retailers here dont care about respect, they just want their cut from the latest movie based junk. I'm thinking about moving into Rapture...

Hmmm, I guess thats true. Most Japanese games do have a lightness to them that american games don't. For example the ridiculous costume options in Resident Evil and Silent Hill games that you would likely never see that in an American horror game unless they were influenced by RE or SH. Then there's the America's obsession with war games, which aren't light at all. Probably one good comparison would be Metal Gear Solid and Splinter Cell (Since there used to be compared a lot). In MGS you have all sorts of funny and quirky things on the side (e.g. the swimsuit model posters on the tanker in MGS2) whereas in Splinter Cell, you'll have some funny dialogue sometimes, but nothing that doesn't fall under the "Drama" genre umbrella. Also, by "Someone needs to apologize at the end" he's not talking about someone always coming out and being like "Oh, I'm sorry, please forgive me." but more the fact that there is a tendency to have no talking between the hero and villain, they just square up at the end of the game and try to kill each other. In a Japanese game there's a tendency for the hero to be like "Why are you doing this?!" and at the end the villain will sometimes be like "Maybe.... I was wrong." which is corny, but thats just a generalization there, usually its more complex than that. Well, if the villain is human/sentient. If its some inhuman beasty then not so much. And anyone, we're talking tendencies and "in general" here, there will always be exceptions on both sides. Its not like American games have 0 penetration in the Japanese market.

I agree with Koushi Kondou . it seems that American gamers glorify violence. Why is it that i see so many gamers over here drueling over gore, the more blood there is the happier they get , i enjoy realism or get geting the crap scared out of me, but it seems that most of my friends play games just because they enjoy the site of guts. Im sorry but i just cant stand it when i see someone laughing there head of while killing innocent ppl on GTA ... i think that says enough about American culture

"pete_merlin violence is too much for japan? isnt this the country that used to be completey vicious in war and if they were on the brink of losing they would commit sucide? right" Wow you are such a **** racist you **** retard Your logic sucked. First, the Japanese had learned the atrocities of wars in the past, that is why they promote peace as solution in their games as much as possible. Are you **** stupid? Where did you learn your history? O wait let me guess. You only learned the part where Americans love shooting and blowing **** up during WWII.

HA!!! ROFL!!! Yah right. Sometimes an ass whipping is in order. Sometimes no peaceful resolution can be had and the rocket launchers and AK47's need to come out.

They've certainly got the right idea. Bah at the latest and the greatest, they'll be there for a while. On the other hand, getting older games that you never had the chance to play can be an incredibly rewarding experience. American stores need to have a balance of both old and new, but you'd be hard pressed to find anything from too long ago in most conventional video game stores. Not to say that new games are bad, but many Western gamers just don't have proper appreciation of the games that are already there.
