Over 40 Million PS5 Consoles Sold, Slightly Slower Than PS4

Sony has announced that it's sold over 40 million PlayStation 5 units since its launch in November 2020.

"With the support of PlayStation fans, we have reached a milestone of 40 million PS5 consoles sold through [July 16, 2023] to gamers since launch," said PlayStation president and CEO Jim Ryan in a blog post. "Thank you so much to our community of gamers--without you this would have been an impossible task."

PlayStation also posted a list of some of the top games voted for by its community. It includes titles like Final Fantasy XVI, Bugsnax, and Demon's Souls. GamesIndustry.biz notes that it took Sony a bit longer to reach that 40 million milestone than the PS4, which reached it two months quicker.

Ryan pointed out the early PS5 stock issues due to the semiconductor shortage as well as the impact COVID-19 had on the world. However, he followed up, saying that stock is plentiful and Sony is now able to meet demand.

Back in April, Sony shared that it had sold 38.4 million units to date and was coming off a record quarter. It shipped (but didn't necessarily sell through) 6.3 million systems from January through March, which was reportedly the most ever for any console in a single quarter. We may get further context on PlayStation's performance in August, when Sony will release its quarterly earnings report.

As far as what's next for PS5, Insomniac Games is launching Marvel's Spider-Man 2 on October 20. Additionally, Sony is releasing its accessibility controller, the Access Controller, on December 6. Sony's remote play streaming device Project Q is reportedly coming out in November as well.
