Codemasters has revealed that Operation Flashpoint will join the burgeoning tactical shooter genre. Operation Flashpoint is similar in concept to games such as Ripcord's SpecOps and NovaLogic's Delta Force; it puts the player in the role of an exiled Soviet citizen that has become a NATO private charged with a peacekeeping mission in the Cold War-era Soviet Union. The game will feature both a solo campaign and multiplayer missions, and it will let the player choose to play from either a first-person or a third-person perspective. Operation Flashpoint will also include a mission editor that will save custom missions in a small and easy-to-download format.

Developed by Prague-based Bohemia Interactive, the game was previously known as Flashpoint 1985: Status Quo. Operation Flashpoint is scheduled for release early next year.
