Obama calls for game violence research

[UPDATE] US President directs Centers for Disease Control to conduct further studies on relationship between virtual violence and real-world violence; the ESA responds.

President Barack Obama today ordered more research be done to investigate the relationship between video games and real-world violence. As part of a $500 million, 23-point plan, Obama directed the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and other research agencies to conduct further research into the matter in the wake of December's deadly school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

No Caption Provided

The Obama administration is calling on Congress to allocate $10 million for the CDC to conduct its research. Vice President Joe Biden met with gaming leaders--including Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello and Entertainment Software Association president Michael Gallagher--last week to discuss gun violence.

Obama's plan to conduct more research into game violence is not the only such ongoing initiative. West Virginia Senator Jay Rockefeller's dead-but-not-defeated proposition would task the National Academy of Sciences to study the effects of violent video games and other programs on children. Rockefeller plans to re-introduce the bill to Congress this month.

"Most gun owners are responsible and law-abiding, and they use their guns safely," reads a statement from the White House. "The President strongly believes that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to bear arms. But to better protect our children and our communities from tragic mass shootings like those in Newtown, Aurora, Oak Creek, and Tucson, there are four common-sense steps we can take right now."

In addition to tasking the CDC with conducting more research on video game violence, Obama's plan includes closing background check loopholes, banning military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, making schools safer, and increasing access to mental health services.

"While no law or set of laws will end gun violence, it is clear that the American people want action," the statement continues. "If even one child’s life can be saved, then we need to act. Now is the time to do the right thing for our children, our communities, and the country we love."

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, the Entertainment Software Association issued a statement on the news to Joystiq. It states that scientific research has proven entertainment does not cause real-world violent behavior and notes the organization will continue to work with Obama and Congress to find solutions.

"ESA appreciates President Obama's and Vice President Biden's leadership and the thoughtful, comprehensive process of the White House Gun Violence Commission. We concur with President Obama's call today for all Americans to do their part, and agree with the report's conclusion that the entertainment and video game industries have a responsibility to give parents tools and choices about the movies and programs their children watch and the games their children play.

"The same entertainment is enjoyed across all cultures and nations, but tragic levels of gun violence remain unique to our country. Scientific research and international and domestic crime data all point toward the same conclusion: entertainment does not cause violent behavior in the real world.

"We will embrace a constructive role in the important national dialogue around gun violence in the United States, and continue to collaborate with the Administration and Congress as they examine the facts that inform meaningful solutions."

How about a study to determine trophy hunting's effect on gun violence as well. I need to be sure shooting wild (or in some cases, domestic) animals in no way influences this kind of behavior either.

@BlueFlameBat I'd be a lot more inclined to believe that shooting something live, knowing that it's going to suffer and die as a result, would translate more directly into violence against humans than playing a game.

@Someguy1212 Reagan would do the same thing. Remember, he changed gun laws after the assassination attempt when one of his cabinet members--James Brady--was seriously injured due to being shot. Where do people get the idea that Reagan was any different? If you truly want difference, ask Ron Paul and Jesse Ventura what they'd do.

What utter nonsense. How long as violence existed amongst humans? For as long as humans have existed, it's not video games, the authorities are just looking for someone/something to blame, so it looks like to the public that they are actively doing something.

@residude Instead of doing what they should; make a public announcement containing the following: All parents of children who buy mature rated games for your underage children,.... STOP! OOOOOR! Accept responsibility for their actions and be accountable for your role in it. The industry didn't buy the game for for child, you did, moron.

Criminals don't follow laws, obviously, so violence will continue. Also, in every part of this world people die every day from violent acts of others, or themselves, yet not a one politician cries out/talks about it. Yet, these mass killings are "enough" to justify making an issue of it?! Furthermore, it comes as no surprise to me, that these politicians, when selectively facing these issues, they always gi through political theater/soapbox nonsense, rather than addressing the real issue(s) @ hand.

As for (video) game violence, I'm only stating what most people who use common sense would say: Parents/Guardians need to be Parents/Guardians, be responsible, & involved with, & in their child/children's lives.

Do I personally believe violence in media can have negative effects on people? To a degree, I do, yes. I also believe that the media does not force anyone to go violent, but that they most of the time, make a willful, conscious decision, to act out in those violent fashions. There are times when cookie cutter answers (will) work, & other times also when things must be looked at, as case by/per case.

@1357900 Liberal ninnies want you to believe that violence will end if guns are eliminated. They seem to think that no one was ever murdered before the invention of guns. The third person to walk on the earth murdered the fourth person to walk on the earth. No gun.

dumb/unaware parents and store clerks are to blame for kids getting violent video games and here's my example:

I live in Connecticut and when the game Capcom Digital Collection came out I went to a gamestop. While I was looking for the game I hear this 8 to 10 year old black kid tell his mother while at the store's register: mom, ask if they have GTA4 and the mom was completely oblivious as to what a GTA4 was. the clerk kept quiet obviously trying to make another sale for after all the mom is buying. when I heard that little kid say those words I jumped in and said to the mom: GTA stands for grand theft auto, those games are some of the most violent video games out there and I provided info as to why it was so violent., when the mom heard my info she said: oh no, I will not buy you that!

was I trying to be responsible or a hero in this situation? HELL NO! I just wanted to steal the kid's happiness! buhuhuhuhuhahahahaaaaaaa! Mission Complete!

Ok, here's the deal. It isn't that hard to figure out. Violence in video games, or movies, or TV shows, or what have you doesn't have the effect they are trying to make us believe it does. If violence in entertainment causes acts of violence, in a school, church, mall, what have you, then there would be millions of people going out and killing each other after playing Dead Space 3 or GTA. Fact is.... there isn't.

What is really going on is that the people who do these horrendous acts of violence, yes, they may have played a video game or two in their lifetime, are ALREADY MESSED UP. They either have some mental problem or something else already wrong with them.

If we don't want this stuff to happen again, don't go after the entertainment device, go after more research/education into mental illness, etc.

The responsibility lies with the people who care for people who have problems. If you know or care for someone has an issue, don't let them play/watch violence.

@zombieseesmeat Well pick a news story and stick with one then. You want to be stressed out, you got it. I didn't choose for that to happen. All you have to do is make a point and move on instead of wasting countless times, thinking that getting rid of users hating guns makes you feel better, despite being a navy corps. Like I said before, my enemy is my enemy is my friend. I'm sure you know what that means.

@zombieseesmeat Ask yourself this, what if you see kids in danger or a gunman about to shoot them? What now? That should be easy for you to answer. Would you shoot the gunman and call yourself a hero because the police are slow and stupid or would you handle it in a calm manner?

Well it's on topic. But I think everyone knows already. There's nothing more left that's needed explanation.

Also, the only thing NRA is good at, is creating fear that someone is taking a gun away from you. Reality check? Think of the kids.

You're the one who is approving Israel's terror to kill civilians in Gaza and spill blood all over it. With the damage you left in Iraq and the so called war on terror that its real aim was to capture natural resources and present your power over the middle east... you now call for research about violence in video games? You little piece of shit...

If any study were to follow objective scientific practices then I would say that it is okay. The problem is when people are looking for a scapegoat and want to draw a connection they tend to create studies that show a connection and they sweep any results that do not give the conclusion they want under the rug. Therein lies the problem with politics these days, nobody is objective anymore and completely ignores any alternatives to what they want.

I actually WANT them to do this. I believe that if a study is done fairly and correctly and is only seeking the truth and not to fill an agenda, that that study will show that games and movies don't make people kill people. So yeah, do the study....I want you to. Just do it fairly and seek the truth as it is, not necessarily the truth as some want it to be.

That's because your country is flooded with easy-to-get-hold-of...... GUNS. But noooooo, once again, completely avoid the real issue and blame violent video games. F-ing morons, honestly. The real problem is guns are deeply ingrained in to American culture, because of an out-of-date Constitution. The only people that NEED guns are the Police and The Armed Forces, that's it.

@canuckbiker Nope wrong again. We are the country that everyone want to come to, you think in the early 1900s millions of people were immigrating to Mexico, or Russia, or Canada? Hell no, Everyone in the world knew that if you wanted freedom and a chance to make it AMERICA was the place to go, that is our reputation. As for our current policies made by our government i wont defend them at all. But the point remains the same, Why do all the countries send there college kids here to learn? Why do yo think China had to move to more of a Capitalistic society?, because what we have here works and you have the freedom to become whatever you set your mind to.

Look up the episode of Penn and Tellers 'Bullsh*t' on video games ( about 23 minutes in and then again at 27 min in) to see a real kid who has been desensitized by violent video games deal with firing a real gun. If you've got the time the whole show is great.

@_Roo_ To have anything remotely representative, you'd need several group with thousands of kids in each over an extended period of time. Otherwise you just have a bucket of random data and you try to make sense out of it. Kids below 13 years old will probably be more influenced by violent games, but over 13 years old, the ones that go nuts were already insane in the first place. That said, if a kid under 13 plays violent games (and technically, 17), the problem is poor parenting.

Well, I'm from Mexico and here violence is something that happens everyday and everywhere, civilians are not allowed to carry weapons and it doesn't make any difference, there are shootings everyday! The real problem is not the guns, nor the games... It's parenting, strong family values and education. Instead of founding a pointless investigation, that money should go to a campaign addressed to parents to make them aware of what their kids are doing. I've been playing violent videogames all my life and sure I can tell the difference between what's real from what's not. It's just sad they are looking for a scapegoat.

How about we look at the one thing all of these mass murderers since Columbine have in common instead. Like the fact they were all taking subscription psychotropic drugs. Oh wait that would mean going against the big money drug lobbies... Besides without the pills little Johny won't sit still in class like a good little drone.

It must be the video games.

@Drebo @zombieseesmeat I'd expect another slave owning american quote form a yankee thats for sure. So instead of peacefully becoming an independent country over time we should have had a bloody brutal war, and let that become our culture instead. I don't know about you but I can go to any movie theatre I want without worrying about getting shot.
