Nvidia's New Driver Causing More Problems

Having problems running The Division? Don't update your Nvidia driver just yet.

Nvidia has released a new driver for its line of GeForce PC graphics cards. Update 364.51 was intended to remedy issues caused by its predecessor, but instead reports indicate these issues have persisted and, in some cases, worsened.

No Caption Provided

Users on Nvidia's Geforce forums have complained the latest update is causing drops in framerate, inconsistencies with refresh rates, freezing, and failure to start games, among other issues. Similar problems have been reported by users on the Nvidia sub-Reddit.

Now Playing: Tom Clancy's The Division - Video Review

As of yet, Nividia has not removed the update from distribution, as it did with update 364.47. Those that may have already installed it already can use a display driver uninstaller such as this one to remove it and install a stable driver. Update 362.00 was the last one with no reported problems and is available here.

Following the problems with its last driver release, which coincided with the launch of Ubisoft's The Division, Nvidia released a guide that could be used to improve performance. This is achieved by tweaking settings across 25 separate fields, including texture quality, anti-aliasing, ambient occlusion, anisotropic filtering, and object detail.

For more on GameSpot's coverage of The Division, take a look at the list below:

Users complaining on a message board is now a story on Gamespot saying you shouldn't update your drivers... really? What happened to you - I liked Gamespot because it wasn't IGN, now it's getting worse.

I can't wait until your next headline - Don't visit Gamespot, users in the comment section are complaining the site lacks credibility. Make sure you have that as your lead vote.

The last drivers without any reported problems? There's no such thing. People are always blaming video drivers for something. Sometimes it's valid, sometimes it isn't, and sometimes it's valid but only in weird circumstances (if you're running 3 monitors with one in portrait mode...). But there are always people claiming the drivers they installed screwed something up.

P.S. 361.75 here. No issues.

Though I love how it still prompts me to update to 364.51, even though I had to roll back twice through safe mode

@retron57: Not really, these are consumer gpu's, if you want expensive ones try quadro gpu's add basically a 0 behind the price. But those aren't for gaming. Titans were quadro's but they disabled just one feature so that the game devs or movie makers wouldn't just get a much cheaper one.

And people were complaining about AMD's drivers. AMD never had these kind of issues.

Anti-competitive behavior.

Disabling their GPU when AMD GPU is present (so you can't use your NVIDIA card for PhysX.)

Infecting games with their GameWorks framework to screw over AMD customers.

Screwing over own customers by abandoning 780 series cards despite performance issues (to force you to upgrade.)

Screwing over own customers by misleading advertisement about their 970 cards.

Anything NVIDIA does is proprietary and for the benefit of NVIDIA. Anything that AMD does is normally open source and for benefit of the community. This kindness on AMD's part might be due to them trailing behind as of late and who's to say the roles wouldn't reverse if they end up with the upper hand in the GPU market.

I can't wait for ridiculously overpriced GPUs that don't work right have the time, you know, when NVIDIA has no competition left.

When you support the big dog, you hurt competition, but when you support the anti-competitive monster who uses d**che-baggery to pull out ahead, you're killing off PC gaming.

Just sayin'...

@ECH71: You're right. AMD might do this too if they were dominating thr gpu market, but they're not, so I support AMD because they're more consumer friendly.

Who knows if things might change in the future, but for now, I buy AMD. Beats letting Nvidia or Intel become monopolies.

R9 390...No issues. I have been using AMD cards for the past 6 or 7 years, and I don't recall having any major issues what so ever.

@SkamArtist: both companies have serious problems.

AMD being too small and cranking out drivers for games late is the major issue with them and generally having much bigger driver overhead due to being understaffed

and nVidia being too big and doing anti-competitive stuff is their biggest problem, like gimping 7xx and older series cards in new games

@solidsnake7882:you might not see issues but the performance is just not right, you look up benchmarks and the performance of the 7xx series is just not where it should be. a 770 should be better than a 960, but it isn't in almost every recent game. look at far cry primal, the division, battlefront, ac syndicate, witcher 3

@Alurit: well it also does matter what type of flu and ram you have, as I have. I have the witcher 3 and ac syndicate and I can run them at high with a mix of ultra and 1080 with a solid 45-55 fps. Which is excellent for that card. No way a two year old card should do as good as a 960 or above.

@solidsnake7882:the problem is not that it's a bad card, because it's not a 770 is decent, the problem is when you have a gpu that has almost 50% cuda cores and TWICE the memory bandwidth performing worse. that is true that the 770 is 1 and a half gen older than a 960 (since the 770 is a rebranded 680 with faster memory) but there's not that much of a performance per core jump between kepler and maxwell so it's pretty clear that nVidia does not optimise games as well for their older cards. just look at the 780ti when it came out, it beat AMD's 290x out of the water, now the 290 beats it in most new games

it's understandable that they prioritise their cards that are still on sale, but I think they should do a better support with their older cards, because people bought them because they beat their AMD counterparts and now they don't

Not sure if it's related to these drivers but I recently started playing The Witcher 3 again and I used to get a flawless 60fps.....now it drops to 50-55 at times.

Had to drop foliage distance down a notch to maintain 60fps. No big deal I just found it odd.

It's not a massive issue like all the console fanboys on here like to believe. We can simply roll back drivers until the issue is fixed.

@wookiegr: I'm sure there are people not having any problems. It's pc gaming......

The fact it's already sold 500k on Steam alone and has a "Mostly Positive" review average tells me the problem isn't that widespread.

@spartanro: it's normally the 1st place people go to vent frustration over a faulty product.

In this case there just isn't that big of a problem. It's a driver issue that's easily solved and is only affecting "some" Nvidia users.

Reading the comnents here you'd think nobody on pc can play the game. That just isn't true.

I haven't had issues w/ a 980TI SLI Rig and many w/ 900 series cards aren't reporting issues, so is it safe to assume it's a problem with older Nvidia GPUs in between the lowest GPUs they support that this game supports? Any 900 series owners having particular issues to bring insight on this?

The game based on benchmarks is *very* demanding apparently; seems this game would benefit many with hopefully a DX12 patch soon.

@eternaldragoonx: rofl you console gamers absolutely crack me up.

You know I have that tv and play games at actual 4k 60fps on my pc. If I can't hit 50-60 at relatively decent settings I just switch to 1080p because let me tell you, smooth motion or not 30fps is terrible.

@doomsday7teen: i game on pc only when i have no other choice... it is good to know that my game is optimized when it boots up (on console) and there are no underlying driver/performance/compatibility issues to worry about. with pc games you just never know what surprises you might find in this regard.

@mikemurphy80: the game will always run on consoles. i have never experienced an outright crash with a console game up until this point... performance issues can happen on consoles, this is true, but at least consoles take priority over pc when it comes to patch updates for most games... in most cases it is only open world games that require major patch updates. it is WAY more common for pc games to freeze or crash on you due to bad drivers or lack of optimization.

i know the problems will hopefully be ironed out in the near future (again i hop that they will as it was not the case with the latest batman), but problems like these do keep me away from ever investing in a gaming pc, i have completed the story mode in the division on a ps4, the game looks absolutely amazing, it is one of the most beautiful games i've ever played and the locked 30 fps is as smooth as one can hope for...

that being said whenever i turn my character rapidly i feel that 30 fps is just ok, i have been a long time gamer and remember the times when even reaching 30 fps was extraordinary but now i want more... i was considering to build a gaming pc from scratch like i used to do more than a decade ago, just to reach a steady 60 fps on ultra settings on my tv set (1080p, i know i am a cheapo) and the nvidia tech which has been supported / promoted in the division has made me consider a geforce 980 ti setup, however the open ended peripheral support of windows and the driver compatibility issues were the things that pushed me to console gaming to start with and i am saddened that the same issues troubling the system 15 years ago are still in effect...

on the other hand i understand most of the major game publishers / developers do sell more copies for the consoles than any other platform and the numbers only add up, that's why their focus is shifted more towards the consoles...

Please feel free to remain uninformed and continue to believe whatever the console lemmings continue to repeat. In the mean time, the rest of us will continue to enjoy our amazing visuals on our 1440p/2160p displays at 60fps with the broadest choices of peripherals to use.

@berserker66666: I had to backroll their first version of Crimson drivers because they would not work with my HD7790 and LG 22" monitor at 1920x1080/60Hz; they instead limited me to 1680x1050/29Hz interlaced, despite disabling EDID so that I could unlock "unsafe" resolutions. Setting to 1920x1080/60Hz just produced very hard to describe artifacts that looked as if the entire monitor was to be thrown out of the window. And backrolling had to be done through Safe Mode because for some reason having administrative rights still prohibited normal driver rollback!

Their latest Crimson drivers fixed that though.

@berserker66666: Unfortunately for the moment this seems to be true. I hope its just temporary, as I have had much better experience with Nvidia, than AMD. Now I don't mean I want AMD to have crappy drivers/support. I mean I want Nvidia to step up their game like they use to be with drivers.

No reason why AMD, and Nvidia can't both have great drivers.

Nvidia outsources there driver development.

They didn't used to, and the drivers , although not perfect , used to be a lot better.

Now, the drivers are made by those guys that call your house and say, "This is windows tecnical depahtment. Your compooter call us"
