Nvidia announces portable Android-powered console

New console dubbed "Project Shield" to stream games from PC, will be powered by Tegra 4 processor; company touts Nvidia Grid cloud-gaming platform.

Graphics card maker Nvidia got the ball rolling at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show by revealing a new portable gaming console/controller hybrid called "Project Shield."

The future of gaming, according to Nvidia.
The future of gaming, according to Nvidia.

The Android-based system runs games from Android's Google Play store and also allows users to stream games installed on their home PC for play on the Shield's screen. Games demonstrated during Nvidia's press conference included Hawken and the PC versions of Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Assassin's Creed III.

Project Shield is based on the company's recently announced Tegra 4 processor. It will have lithium batteries that last for 38 hours. In addition to an HDMI port, the system has a micro-SD slot, a micro-USB slot, and a headphone jack.

Attached to the controller itself is a five-inch, 1280x720-pixel HD multitouch screen that is based on a clamshell design. The system will also be able to output HD gameplay and video to a 4K TV screen. There is currently no word on "Project Shield's" price and release date.

Nvidia also pushed Nvidia Grid, a GPU that is specifically made for cloud computing and cloud gaming all across various PCs and smartphones, which was announced back in May of 2012. The card can push out about 240 Nvidia GPUs' worth of power, which is equivalent to about 700 Xbox 360s, according to Nvidia officials at the press conference. Currently, Nvidia's partners in conjunction with the card are Agawi, Cyber Cloud, Cloudunion, G-cluster, Ubitus and Playcast.

@mrboone01 And my point was what kind of portable gaming device leaves you tied to your PC?

@mrboone01 The article doesn't say how it streams games. I doubt it turns your PC into a server to stream them across the internet, it's probably streaming the video wirelessly over a limited range. If you know otherwise, then I stand corrected.

Try not to be such an asshole.

If it's streaming from your PC, then you're probably stuck in the general vicinity of your PC, in which case what's the point? Why would I want to play games on a tiny screen with lower resolution when my PC is sitting there running the game anyway? Other than that it's a (presumably) expensive way to play mobile games.

considering that you have to stream games from pc, then I don't think that console gamers will buy this, because many don't have PCs that are capable of running those games, if it is possible for the nvidia console to run the game, then that might be cool. If I just said something really stupid please let me know.

I don't know why, but, I think this won't work for Nvidia. It looks interesting and all, but I'm not sure about it.

I assume the 38 hour battery life is on standby. If that's battery life playing a PC game with all features maxed out, this thing defies all physics/chemistry/logic/science/standards

The quality of the graphics fidelity won't affect battery life since it's only streaming a video. I am insulted that you quote science in your frivolous comment.

@ReplayGuy There could be a lot of dead space inside that controller that could be filled with battery, much larger than a cell phone.

I honestly don't understand their market/demographic for this piece of hardware. PC gamers who want mobile gaming? And don't care if they look incredibly awkward while doing so?

In my humble opinion, there is zero possibility of this platform being a success.

I don't know 700 xbox 360's worth of power, actually it's realistic, look at the iphone and thumb drives you can swallow that hold 64 gb's of data... heh

Also it only has to process that small monitor so yeah that's probably a true capability... lol

240 nvidia gpus worth of power doesn't really give people a good picture of what it can do. You have to keep in mind that they could be talking about any gpu produced by nvidia... maybe it has 240 gtx680's worth of power and this thing will cost $150000 lol

First they need to learn how to build a decent controller before attempting something like this.

I think this is a great idea for PC gamers to take their games on the go. No need for "exclusive games" on the portable handheld market if anyone could take the PC or console market and stream it to a handheld. The HDMI port means you can hook it up to almost any modern TV/monitor. Honestly it sounds perfect. My big one is the latency issue: how close you need to be to a PC for it to work, and the bigger issue of how being 300 miles away would impact the performance. I mean, I stream RTS games from my PC to my Kindle; the latency issue is seconds afterwards though, and that's just a few miles away. Fix it, and you've got my money.

This thing is unbelievably ugly. Neat concept, good hardware and battery life but it has one fatal flaw. It plays google play games.... yuck! Streaming from your home PC is cool. If i have an AMD card which is better than the 650 can i still do that? or is the technology exclusive to nvidia card owners? Wouldn't buy it regardless but it would be a point of interest for me.

The Moga Android controller is better than this thing for playing Android games with your phone/tablet. Also, look at how humongous it is! It's bigger than the OG Xbox's duke controller. How are you supposed to store this? Doesn't look like the screen can fold up on top of the buttons. Stick to what your good at, Nvidia... grafx cards.

@AlexFili The video card isn't on the machine but rather in a nVidia house where cloud computing will stream the graphics to the handheld seamlessly over the internet. Think video game streaming. This brings down the cost of the machine considerably since they would need to build one 2 or 3 video cards to support cloud computing.

Can some one invent something cool please? Like a * 3D Virtual Reality * gaming console. Stop re-inventing things. Is not like the technology to that doesn't exist.

I'd be more interested in it's ability to play Android games and original content than streaming. It only streams over wifi, so if I'm already in my house, why would I want to play on this small screen instead of my big screen?

@Raeldor it would have a few minor uses but nothing extraordinary. 9/10 times I would opt for the larger screen.

The PC streaming is either going to be the killer app or the death knell for this one, depending on how well it works. You'll obviously need to leave your PC on with some sort of server app running on it to launch and control the games you wish to play, which may be a security liablility, and then there's the latency issue. If those problems can be overcome, it could be a very desirable piece of kit.

If your that close to your PC then why not just play on your PC? More nonsensical items like this are just pointless and a waste of plastic. Cell Phones, Ipads, all that garbage. I have no use for any of them.

I'm surprised no one's concerned about Android battery appetites. In fact, battery life is a major problem with this platform. I had to keep my older smarphone because my new one with Android kills battery in less than a day. And they say this device will run games.

@Techn1c4l yes, but you can counter this by turning off widgets, running apps, gps... stuff that this console won't have by default. My phone lasts around 24 hours, and that is moderate gameplay, and lots of web surfing

@mikel222222 @Techn1c4l they do claim 5-10 hours of gameplay and 24 hours of HD video playback. For a handheld gaming/media console thats not too bad.

@mikel222222 @Techn1c4l Quite true- this is the same sort of approach taken by the Ouya (sic?). Stopping Android doing a lot of the background stuff and memory cleanup saves both power and processor time.
