Nvidia announces portable Android-powered console

New console dubbed "Project Shield" to stream games from PC, will be powered by Tegra 4 processor; company touts Nvidia Grid cloud-gaming platform.

Graphics card maker Nvidia got the ball rolling at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show by revealing a new portable gaming console/controller hybrid called "Project Shield."

The future of gaming, according to Nvidia.
The future of gaming, according to Nvidia.

The Android-based system runs games from Android's Google Play store and also allows users to stream games installed on their home PC for play on the Shield's screen. Games demonstrated during Nvidia's press conference included Hawken and the PC versions of Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Assassin's Creed III.

Project Shield is based on the company's recently announced Tegra 4 processor. It will have lithium batteries that last for 38 hours. In addition to an HDMI port, the system has a micro-SD slot, a micro-USB slot, and a headphone jack.

Attached to the controller itself is a five-inch, 1280x720-pixel HD multitouch screen that is based on a clamshell design. The system will also be able to output HD gameplay and video to a 4K TV screen. There is currently no word on "Project Shield's" price and release date.

Nvidia also pushed Nvidia Grid, a GPU that is specifically made for cloud computing and cloud gaming all across various PCs and smartphones, which was announced back in May of 2012. The card can push out about 240 Nvidia GPUs' worth of power, which is equivalent to about 700 Xbox 360s, according to Nvidia officials at the press conference. Currently, Nvidia's partners in conjunction with the card are Agawi, Cyber Cloud, Cloudunion, G-cluster, Ubitus and Playcast.

sounds good on paper, but there is probably some flaws that we are overlooking in all this it's a bit too good to be true...i.e. if it's a streaming device...it's not really portable cuz you need wifi or maybe a dataplan or something...so you could potentially be paying monthly to play games you already have on your computer. it's a cool concept though cuz the technology will be able to handle next-gen games right?

@wizardboyus It will steam both PC games locally over WiFi, but it supports Android apps such as Onlive for on-the-go streaming, if that's what you want, and it will also play anything stored on the device, obviously, such as NFS Most Wanted or Shadowgun.

@wizardboyus No, it is still portable because it'll also be able to play Android games that are downloaded to the device. You wouldn't need the power of Tegra 4 to just stream games from somewhere else.

with the war on used games and aging consoles the PC is poised once again to dominate all of gaming.

@tachsniper right, because digital distribution has such a second-hand friendly scene of no limitations what so ever.

@Victorious_Fize @tachsniper No, but it does constantly give PC gamers amazing deals, getting games for cheaper than used. If the consoles lose the used market, that makes awesome steam sales even more tempting.

@Victorious_Fize @the_bi99man @tachsniper I would be concerned about secondhand sales if I was buying an Xbox game. For example, a recent purchase for me was The Darkness 2 for PC. The Xbox version is $20 new and around $15 used.

I got the Steam version on Amazon for $2.50. I am in no way concerned with trading in because I got such a good deal. Same with many, many other gamers.

@Victorious_Fize @the_bi99man @tachsniper You save more buying a game on steam sale then you would buying the game for 50-60 then selling it. Rather or not it is deflective is irrelevant. Money is money.

@the_bi99man @tachsniper Deflective. We're talking about second hand games here, not sales and deals.

PC is far worse than consoles when it comes to it. Regardless of whether it compensates in other aspects or not.

I mainly trade in second hand stuff with friends for free, too.

Waiting to hear how the streaming will be done, WiFi or 4G? 3G wouldn't be able to handle the amount of data. WiFi only means it's not truly portable.

I for one find portable games to be useless unless you don't have your license and people drive you everywhere or I guess if you take a train or something. I never have the need to play games when I'm not home but that's just me.

@taylor888 Totally agree. I bought and played Crisis Core, Lunar, and the God of War games on the PSP because it plugged into my TV so it was basically a home console.

Hmm...we don't know what games it will play, what it's processing power is, how heavy it is, or battery life. I'm not worried about the graphics it can handle, but the rest seem like major issues for something like this.

@craigprime Actually, all of that information is in the article. I guess we don't really know how accurate it all is, but it's all there. It'll play Google Play games, plus stream games from your PC, it has Nvidia's new Tegra 4 processor, and lithium ion batteries that reportedly last for 38 hours. I guess we don't know how heavy it is. It looks kind of beastly. Probably at least a bit heavier than other handhelds like the 3ds or Vita.

with this, the ouya project, steam box. I wonder what they will all bring to the table.A console is defined by its unique experience. something you cannot get anywhere else. (nintendo: mario; xbox: halo; sony: GoW) with these new consoles not having a unique brand or install base what will they each offer the consumer?

I don't think portable consoles have a future anymore, with phones becoming so powerful (I have freakin GTA 3 on a mid range Android) they will probably fill the needs for portable gaming soon enough, the 3DS and Vita are probably the last of their kind. Bummer.

@Daian But the controls on phones suck major balls. It's okay for casual games but I've been trying to play Vice City on my Note 2 and don't get me wrong its very impressive but even on that massive screen it's infuriating at times. I believe this Project SHIELD has great potential.

@hahahasan If I may ask, how is the Note 2? I've been looking for a smartphone to replace my little dinky-ass phone, and the Note 2 is what I've had my eye on lately. Is it worth it?

This thing looks promising and I'm interested to see what sort of graphics Tegra 4 is capable of, but I'm skeptical of the PC game-streaming feature.

Why would I want to stream my games to a 5-inch, 720p display when I could just play them on my 23-inch, 1080p monitor?

If it was able to stream games over LTE while on the go, it might be really cool, but it sounds like the feature will only work over a local network.

With all the 'muscle' that they are putting in this portable, how much do you think it will retail for? I can't see it to be under $300.00 since it has a very high-end tech specs(quad core tegra, 720p display, 5 inch touch screen, high capacity battery). How will they market this portable? It is not a household name such as Nintendo, Xbox, Playstation brands. Who are they targeting this device? Casual gamers will be wary in buying this since they will or have already have a super/smartphone which plays Android games on the go when they upgrade their contracts. History also teach us that it does not matter if it has powerful specs if it does not have compelling games. In order to gain third party game developer/franchise support, it needs to have a decent install base not only in North America but also internationally.

M$ and Sony are going to have their hands full in the next few years. If their consoles fail to deliver, I have a feeling they are not going to be able to hold the new wave of cheap pc gaming.

@lazycomplife haha i know right? When I read that I thought to myself "sooo... they're ripping off the wii u?" Except obviously you will have the better fps and graphics.. but I highly doubt anybody would rather play their pc games on this instead of kb/m and with a 5 inch screen the graphics won't be that great to notice

I think the point here is you could theoretically play your pc games, apps, ect on-the-go. And not be limited to say, one system/console. I want to see multi-cross-platform-play. I want to own my ps3, and still play with xbox people, that would be nice. NEVER happen, but would be nice(well, could have happen. If someone opened up a private server, with the aforementioned cross platform concept.

@Fiendvinny That's what really needs to happen with games. Playing the same game with people across any platform that supports it. But as you said, that won't likely ever happen as long as there are separate console manufacturers. Hell, there are still games with region-locked servers.

Wow. I don't know what to say. Aesthetically, it's like Nvidia put Homer Simpson in charge of the design team. From a conceptual standpoint most portable systems have games designed to be played in short intervals like if you're on a bus or waiting room. When I'm at home I like being able to sit my ass down at my computer terminal in my pajamas and play Skyrim. A portable PC sounds cool but when I'm out and about I just can't imagine whipping this out without feeling slightly embarrassed.
