NPD: Wii Fit sells record 777,000 in January

US gaming industry sales climb 13 percent to $1.33 billion, led by Nintendo's fitness trainer; Left 4 Dead, Call of Duty, World Tour, Skate 2 among other top sellers.

Earlier today, the US Commerce Department delivered the semi-shocking news that total retail sales for January rose 1 percent, defying a six-month decline in growth and marking the biggest overall retail gains in 14 months. Of course, that percentage climb paled in comparison to the US gaming industry. Reporting on US software, hardware, and accessory sales today, the NPD Group revealed that industry revenues stood at $1.33 billion for January, a 13 percent climb from a year prior.

That's a lot of post-holiday squats...
That's a lot of post-holiday squats...

Falling in line with analysts' expectations, US software sales amounted to $676.6 million in January, a 10 percent increase over last January's $614.7 million haul. And as expected, Nintendo's Wii Fit absolutely clobbered the competition. The Balance Board-equipped fitness training game sold 777,000 units for the month, a figure that sets a new record for the most single-SKU sales in January.

All said, Nintendo once again dominated the software sales charts, having produced half of the top 10 games for the month. Perennial best-seller Wii Play with Remote posted an additional 415,000 units in January, securing it the second slot on the chart. Also a top seller last year, Mario Kart Wii scored the third position with 292,000 units. New Super Mario Bros. and Mario Kart DS, both for Nintendo's portable, landed in eighth and ninth positions, respectively, with sales of 135,000 and 132,000 units.

As for games that weren't exclusive to Nintendo's systems, the Valve-published, Electronic Arts-distributed Left 4 Dead for the Xbox 360 scored the top position, placing fourth with 243,000 units sold. Activision's Call of Duty: World at War followed at a close fifth, selling 235,000 units. EA and Activision battled it out for the sixth and seventh slots as well, with Guitar Hero World Tour on the Wii edging out Skate 2 on the Xbox 360, 199,000 units to 155,000. EA's Lord of the Rings: Conquest achieved sales of 113,000 units on the Xbox 360, rounding out the 10th slot in this month's chart.

NPD analyst Anita Frazier provided some color on the software sales, saying that the presence of catalog hits in the best-seller charts bodes well for continued industry growth in 2009. "Only two of the top 10 games this month were new releases," said Frazier. "The continued strength of games that have been in the market for some time clues us in to just how many new consumers are coming into the industry. This broadening of the audience for gaming will help buoy the industry through these tough economic times, provided they have enough compelling content to keep them interested."

Sales for Sony's console totaled 203,200 units on the month, a 25 percent year-over-year decline from the 269,000 units Sony sold in January 2008. Sales of the aging PlayStation 2 continued to dwindle, selling 101,200 units on the month, while the PSP sold 172,300 units in January.

Nintendo's Wii, on the other hand, greatly upped its performance from last year, taking top billing during the month with 679,200 units sold. The DS, too, turned in a stellar month, adding to its 96.22 million global lifetime sales with another 510,800 systems. After spiking during the holiday rush, Microsoft's Xbox 360 sold 309,000 systems on the month.

Wow, people are totally tasteless. The Wii is a terrible console. Poor graphics, lame selection of games (has to resort to letting you buy old games that aren't even new), and a gimmicky control scheme that gets old fast. I traded (never would I pay) for a Wii and wow, it's as lame as I thought it would be. I own all three consoles and can safely say I have almost no attraction to the Wii. Nintendo, you're a farcry from the glory you once had. The N64 was the last decent console and the PSX trounced it with a better selection of games and better graphics. The PS2 and Xbox were leagues above the Gamecube - a comparable doorstop to the other two consoles. And now, the most gimmicky stupid console they made is selling well. Because people who have no right playing games are buying these stupid things. I'm serious, I do NOT see the thrill or fun in the Wii. I bashed it before owning one. I own one and I STILL think it sucks. I tried to be objective but it's just no comparison! The PS3 and 360 are leagues above the Wii (and my preference there would be the 360). Nintendo, I hope you fail as bad as Sega. You'd make a great "silly little kids game" company since that's what you cater to. There are next to no serious games on the Wii save for ports like RE4 and CoD...

From the above numbers.... Looks like Sony is DOMINATING Microsoft and its sole 360 console... IF you add all the sales figures from 01/09 for all the PS3's + PSP's + PS1's I'd say Sony has sold way more consoles and handhelds than Microsoft and it's sole 360 and thus has generated more revenue too boot!!!

Hooray Nintendo :D:D:D I'd give props to the 360, but I keep getting reminded that they laid off 5000 employees even in making a profit either way :( Sony didn't really have many options and they decided to lay off 2000 employees, but consider. the crisis they're laying in...and it's going to get even worse over the next couple years that's for sure. I honestly can't see another PS3 price drop to ring in the profits for Sony and getting them out of the hole they're in.

2 Wii's Sold for every 360, and 3 Wii's Sold for every PS3. More Wii's sold then PS3, PS2, PSP Combined. At this rate with the current economy Sony may have to sell the PlayStation division off to survive.

Glad to hear the good news for the Big N and Microsoft. I wouldn't worry about Sony's stand in the economy. The company itself has nothing to worry about, it's position in third may change or may not...but it's making money either way around.

Doesn't matter if Wii Fit may be a gimick to some of you, it's for a certain audience and OBVIOUSLY it's doing well for a reason. Anyways, funny that the PS3 can't get in the top 10 software sales. And those PS3 sales...ouch! Wii and 360 seems to still be dominating and doing it with a kick and punch too! Congrats Microsoft and Nintendo on the current success, hardware and software wise.

Impressive sales figures... and an honest and noble effort on Nintendo's part in taking video games going beyond gaming, but as a health and fitness professional myself, it concerns me that the populace is willing to turn to a device and software that is more fad than true bridge to fitness. My girlfriend purchased the WiiFit and I've had ample time to experiment and experience it, and although it delivers a certain amount of "fun" to the seemingly mundane task of exercising, I don't believe that it offers the substance and results that some basic fitness training, a gym membership (many of which are extremely inexpensive), and sincere desire and motivation are capable of attaining. To my case I argue that the WiiFit is only effective at two parts of the overall fitness puzzle, and those are resistance and proprioceptive training. In terms of aerobic, nutrition, and flexibility training (the first two items being absolutely critical to weight loss and cardiovascular disease prevention), the WiiFit comes up staggeringly short. That being said, Nintendo has put forth an honest effort at curtailing a sedentary society, and should be commended for that. Which is why that as much as I view the WiiFit as more faddish than effective, I'm glad to see that it has been a success and hopefully it is helping users beat back the tenants of sedentary life and allowing people a bridge to the motivation needed to making overall health and fitness an integral part of their lives.

A fitness gimmick that does absolutely nothing to improve your fitness level and a crappy collection of mini games bundled with an extra controller are the two biggest selling games in January, while most of the big budget AAA titles from the Christmas season have already vanished into thin air, and this is supposedly good news for the game industry?

@ LindBergh2007 Wow, annoyed with Nintendo much? In case you haven't noticed, the quality of Wii titles is starting to get better, just look at the past few weeks with Tenchu, Deadly Creatures, and House of the Dead Overkill coming out one right after the other. Now other developers are starting to support the Wii with DLC (just look at Rock Band 2 now having a music store). Things are looking good for the Wii right now. As for Sony, ouch again, not one game on the top ten chart at all. Glad to see games like Left 4 Dead up there though. 2009 is starting off rough for Sony coming up over 100,000 less than Microsoft and after this holiday season, its not looking well. I expect to see a spike in sales though after Killzone 2 comes out finally, though it'll probably show up in March's NPD numbers.

Why does Wii Play even count? No one buys it for the game. People buy it for the Wii Remote and because it has a game bundled with it.

Pleasantly surprised to see L4D still selling so well. PS3's in a tough spot in the US with several consecutive months down from the previous year and still not showing any signs of closing the install base gap. Considering this gen will be over around 2011, I don't see any way Sony can gain ground anymore. It's certainly not the end of the world for Sony, but it should be humbling to fall from commanding first to third in one generation (although you wouldn't know it listening to Tretton or Hirai).

Nintendo may be winning this generation, thanks to the Wii's Casual Fanbase, but it's the real console war is Sony vs. Microsoft. If Sony really wants to put a dent into Microsoft there are three things they need to do. 1: A PRICE CUT: Unless the Economy turns around ASAP, the longer Sony waits to cut the price of the PS3, the harder it will be to dig themselves out of the hole they've dug 2: Advertise the big name games: MS poured all their resources into marketing Gears 2 and HALO 3, I mean they had comic books, novels, toys, TV Spots, Endorsments from other companies and clebraties, all designed to drum up the fan base and attract new fans. What did Resistance 2 and LBP get: NOTHING 3: Restore the PS3 to it's former glory: In other words, put everything you've taken out back in.

Wow. I hadn't realized that the thumbs up/down actually hurt anyone. What a great way to make a statement about maturity; by getting angry at people on the Internet who disagree with another person's comments on a gaming news article.

Nintendo is bad for third party developers = is bad for gaming in general. Look at what is selling their piece of crap mini games. Don't let Guitar Hero mislead you--that sells on the Wii because it fits the whole casual mini-game paradigm. I love Nintendo franchises, but how is good for gaming in general when the only thing they seem to move is their own garbage?

777K for Wii Fit, huh? As if that game needs any more good luck to do what it has done for almost a year now. I don't know if a lot of people's New Year Resolution was to either get into better shape (which doesn't mean you're fat, contrary to a lot of comments I'm seeing) or maybe try something new, but the Wii Fit idea continues to be rather popular in the US. Once again, kudos to the Big N for yet another impressive month. Other than that, January was a rather quiet month, as usual, so if anything, the sales numbers displayed are a good thing for the most part. Considering all of the bad news we've been hearing about lately, this kinda brightens the mood of things a tad.

Never got the big deal with Wii fit, why not just ride a bike or work out in a gym? That helps loose weight AND is a lot more fun. I'm probably going to get a lot of thumbs down for this but still.

Is anyone else with me on these points?: -I'm blown away that Left 4 Dead, being brand new, outsold every other core game--especially Call of Duty, considering it's in the same genre -Also surprised Skate 2 did so well. And LOR: C was garbage! Helps to have a good license I guess -Sony's gotta get their act together. Declining sales = bad sign. They need to cut the cost of the system now. Yes they'll lose money on each system but it's better than an early death for the PS3. With games like Killzone 2 and MAG coming out, they could cut the cost to $300, then tout it's affordable BRD capabilities and solid games lineup for a one-two punch. -Wii will eventually take over the world. I still don't really get the appeal outside of a few games like Mario Galaxy and Mario Kart, but then again I don't think I'm their target demo :P

Even though I hate what Nintendo is doing with the Wii, I still can't help but root for them.... primarily because they're the only ones that from the start of the generation took a risk. Plus, I'll always love the DS.... not so much the Wii, but the DS deserves its success.

Nice month for Nintendo and Sony did better than MS b/c they have three platforms on the market. And BTW, Sony isn't dead b/c if they are then MS is as well since Sony stock is going up while MS is going down. So if any company will drop out of the console race, it would be MS IMO... I don't see any of the three dropping out.

I just don't understand how a console with barely any good games is outselling everyone else in Hardware as well as Software with crappy games. It doesn't make any sense. Seriously, do people have that much low self-esteem that they are falling under the hands of Nintendo? I mean, Nintendo is a great company but they like to brag too much and it just irritates me.

Sony has fallen into the same trap Sega and Atari fell into: Overconfidence leading to bad buisness decisions. The scary thing is what will happen if Sony pulls out of the Console Market all together, there's no one that can compete against Microsoft and Nintendo.

The PS3's numbers are disappointing, but they can easily fix that. There are plenty of games that could be released and they could move millions of systems. They need to hurry up with Final Fantasy XIII, God of War III, and FF Vs. XIII. And where's the information on Kingdom Hearts 3? or a Final Fantasy VII remake?? Those would help a lot also!
