NPD: Wii Fit sells record 777,000 in January

US gaming industry sales climb 13 percent to $1.33 billion, led by Nintendo's fitness trainer; Left 4 Dead, Call of Duty, World Tour, Skate 2 among other top sellers.

Earlier today, the US Commerce Department delivered the semi-shocking news that total retail sales for January rose 1 percent, defying a six-month decline in growth and marking the biggest overall retail gains in 14 months. Of course, that percentage climb paled in comparison to the US gaming industry. Reporting on US software, hardware, and accessory sales today, the NPD Group revealed that industry revenues stood at $1.33 billion for January, a 13 percent climb from a year prior.

That's a lot of post-holiday squats...
That's a lot of post-holiday squats...

Falling in line with analysts' expectations, US software sales amounted to $676.6 million in January, a 10 percent increase over last January's $614.7 million haul. And as expected, Nintendo's Wii Fit absolutely clobbered the competition. The Balance Board-equipped fitness training game sold 777,000 units for the month, a figure that sets a new record for the most single-SKU sales in January.

All said, Nintendo once again dominated the software sales charts, having produced half of the top 10 games for the month. Perennial best-seller Wii Play with Remote posted an additional 415,000 units in January, securing it the second slot on the chart. Also a top seller last year, Mario Kart Wii scored the third position with 292,000 units. New Super Mario Bros. and Mario Kart DS, both for Nintendo's portable, landed in eighth and ninth positions, respectively, with sales of 135,000 and 132,000 units.

As for games that weren't exclusive to Nintendo's systems, the Valve-published, Electronic Arts-distributed Left 4 Dead for the Xbox 360 scored the top position, placing fourth with 243,000 units sold. Activision's Call of Duty: World at War followed at a close fifth, selling 235,000 units. EA and Activision battled it out for the sixth and seventh slots as well, with Guitar Hero World Tour on the Wii edging out Skate 2 on the Xbox 360, 199,000 units to 155,000. EA's Lord of the Rings: Conquest achieved sales of 113,000 units on the Xbox 360, rounding out the 10th slot in this month's chart.

NPD analyst Anita Frazier provided some color on the software sales, saying that the presence of catalog hits in the best-seller charts bodes well for continued industry growth in 2009. "Only two of the top 10 games this month were new releases," said Frazier. "The continued strength of games that have been in the market for some time clues us in to just how many new consumers are coming into the industry. This broadening of the audience for gaming will help buoy the industry through these tough economic times, provided they have enough compelling content to keep them interested."

Sales for Sony's console totaled 203,200 units on the month, a 25 percent year-over-year decline from the 269,000 units Sony sold in January 2008. Sales of the aging PlayStation 2 continued to dwindle, selling 101,200 units on the month, while the PSP sold 172,300 units in January.

Nintendo's Wii, on the other hand, greatly upped its performance from last year, taking top billing during the month with 679,200 units sold. The DS, too, turned in a stellar month, adding to its 96.22 million global lifetime sales with another 510,800 systems. After spiking during the holiday rush, Microsoft's Xbox 360 sold 309,000 systems on the month.

so many wii's sold but yet only one game worthy of being called exclusive is on there "mario kart wii" why cant all those millions of people buy super mario galaxy and zelda instead to support nintendos first party exclusives instead of the wii "enter name here" games? :( cuz that just makes nintendo wanna make more casual stuff >_

It´s incredible how this generation divided gamers in two very different factions: "hardcore" gamers, and "casual" gamers. I think the WII has only 5 or 6 good games, and yet thet rule. That worries me. Because if 90% of WII games suck, but they sell, the average quality of games will decrease (whos going to do a great game and have a lot of risk, if you can do a random game for two bucks and sell it really well?). That´s bad for everyone in the long term. It was really a bad idea to remove the "nintendo quality seal", and, please, consumers: do not expend your money on crappy games! I think Nintendo should be expending some of the money they are earning in doing more quality games. In 2008, Nintendo did nothing except collect millions.

It's funny how, despite the OVERWHELMING PROOF that Wii software overall lacks in quality and hardly any good games are coming out for it these days, fanboys defend Wii till the end. ONE great game's been released in the past YEAR (SSBB--almost a year agp). I'm not even hating--I'm stating facts. I usually like Nintendo, and own a DS. But look at the BEST reviewed games to come out for EACH system for the last SIX months (not including download games): Top 3 Wii: Guitar Hero: WT @ 86.5% avg (a game that's as good or better on PS3 and 360), de Blob (81.5%), and Shaun White (78.6%) Just SOME of the top PS3 and 360 games to come out in that time: Little Big Planet (94.4%), Gears of War 2 (93.2%), Fallout 3 (92.5%, Left 4 Dead (89.3%), NHL 09 (89.4%), (a superior) Rock Band 2 (92%)... and other blockbusters like Street Fighter 4 and Killzone 2 are just around the corner. Seriously, look at REALITY. But hey, have fun "waggling" your controller and playing such "highly anticipated" games as "Deadly Creatures." As a true fan of gaming, this makes me sick.

Once again why do they continue to call Wii play a softwaresale seeing it comes packed with a remote. That would mean that solitare and minesweep should be the top selling game considering it gets sold with every pc/laptop that comes with a MS operating system.... Go Solitare!!!

My local community fitness center gives out free "aerobic and cardiovascular exercises". And it is taught my professional's. Unfortunately, it is just me and 2 other people in it. But hey, I've lost 15 pounds steadily. And learned how to play badminton at the same time. :D

To Sony I hope you are watching this . Every month it is the same scenario the Wii and DS selling like hot cakes and the X360( both the consoles and software sales) beating the PS3. Please go for an agressive tough marketing campaign, lower your price for the PS3. Even if you have great games like MGS 4 and Killzone 2 it wont change the fact that you are last in this console race.

@LindBergh2007 I respect Nintendo, doesn't mean I hate on the other consoles. I actually want a Ps3, if only the price drops. I'm interested in SC4, MGS, PoP, RE5 and probably Resistance 2. As for Wii upcoming Wii titles, I don't need 30 upcoming games that are worth owning.I never really looked that far into it, but I see Overkill, madworld, condult, deadrising, boomblox 2, dead space and maybe others that I can't think of at the moment. I even want games that I missed, No more heroes, Call of duty, Skate it, shaun white, and rock band 2. This is enough to last me a year, and I'm sure good games are still the horizon. This isn't about me alone, since casual gamers will also get their fair share of games worth owning. It's a matter of taste.

Uh oh, new NDP numbers, here comes the Kindergarden crowd to throw a temper tantrum again. @admiral_picard "I bashed it before owning one. I own one and I STILL think it sucks." I love the reading confessions of enlightened gamers that say the Wii sucked, but then bought one anyway. Too funny.

@dotWithShoes It may be THAT simple but I know what is.........an actual workout ;). It's pretty straight-forward, all you is squat down....and back up.....down.....up. Now that you know how to do squats go to your bedroom and pratice, also be glad your 90 dollars richer hearing it from me instead of Wii Fit ;).

@moose_knuckler Let's get one thing straight pal: people are paying NINETY dollars to "learn aerobics and all the other crap!": :D But no, really, I think the picture is a little more complex than that. First, yeah, it's basically just teaching you exercises, but it's also kind of an exercise video (which have always been money makers) only better since it can tell you if you're doing well or not, can help you breathe properly while attempting them (via the sound of waves rolling in and out), and give you some (vague) advice on how to correct it. It scores you too, and while it may seem silly to chase after a meaningless score, that hasn't stopped people from accumulating XBox gamer points. :D Also, it does have some minigames to show off the balance board (like how Wii Sports and Wii Play show off the Wiimote) while giving a slight workout. Finally, don't forget that some of those sales were more for the hardware than he software, since games are coming out that can use the Balance Board.

It amazes me the way gaming is going. People don't give a hoot about graphics or anything new. they just want cheap. Nintendo gave them cheap and they will continue to do so. Seriously? 70 bucks to learn how to squat? Who doesn't know how to do that? WTF Nintendo, I applaud you. That's a LOT of people who don't know how to exercise. I'm movin' to Australia.

@Sam3231 I had the same thoughts running through my head. I guess the "soft spot" in consumers is to work-out while playing a video game lol. I personally think it's ridiculous how some game telling you how to work out (maybe there's some mini-games, not exactly sure) would sell so well. If you ask me I say it's degrading, since when do you need to pay $69 (I think that's how much it is) to learn aerobics and all the other crap you do on there?

Wii-fit a lame exercise sim that has horrible graphics and that people only buy for novelty purposes. Yes of course that's all people are buying and the fanboys keep hoping for Nintendo to convince 3rd party publishers to put better titles on the Wii then the crap that's already on it. But keep getting dissapointed and watching the casual gaming market destroy the software industry. Sony now in serious trouble and now watching SEGA very carefully with dismal console sales. Mircosoft faring well, but waiting for more titles. On top of that no NEW games are selling, it's still the same old Wii novelty games and it's periphrels The same old Wii-Play and Mario Kart Wii. That it and it's still hard to believe that fanboys are getting excited over this when they have nothing new to play.

@admiral_picard Sorry to bring you down from your Kool-Aid induced, paranoid delusions, but the things you were saying the Wii and the GameCube just made me laugh out loud. Seriously the PS2 was better than the GameCube? I’m just wondering how you came to that conclusion? The GameCube’s graphics were far better than anything that the PS2 was capable of producing. Just a little technical note for you, all the cut scenes in RE4 for the PS2 were all pre-rendered video because the PS2 couldn’t render the graphics on the fly like the GameCube could. This is why if you had a different outfit on in the PS2 version it wasn’t reflected in the cut scenes. And as for you rant about no real games for the Wii, you know I get so tired of listing off all the great games that are out there for the system and those coming in the months ahead. Bottom-line, if you can’t find any good games for the Wii then you just aren’t looking. The controls gimmicky? Not if they are done right. Playing a FPS on the Wii is the best way to play that kind of game. Anyone who has ever played Metal of Honor 2 or COD: World at War knows exactly what I’m talking about. Hell even Sonic Unleashed plays better on the Wii than any other version. Yeah, yeah we all get it; you hate the Wii for X number of reasons. We’ve all heard it before and you know something, no matter how many times you and your fellow Wii-haters out there post your same tried old comments every month, still doesn’t change the facts as they are now does it?

Funny how it was always the PS3/360 being forecasted as the generation winner, yet the Wii completely put that to silence. It's combating increasing obesity in the US, making brain games actually cool to play, & even has a butt board for the dang thing! I want a buttboard for my PS3!!

stop hating on nintendo. so what if their games "are for kids"? let the kids have their fun, too. if i remember right, we were all once kids and we used to, at least i used to, play nintendo games, had hours and hours of fun playing mario and zelda and all the other cool games. well, i'm not a kid anymore and i don't own, nor am i planning to get a Wii. some of you "grown ups" really need to grow up.

@kejigoto FACT: The "great games" you cite are just plain BAD. Wii's drought of quality software is continuing (not that it seems to matter obviously). But Tenchu? 70.7% aggregate rating on Gamerankings.com. Deadly Creatures? Barely cracked 70%. House of the Dead is at a respectable 80.7%, but it's far from a blockbuster (despite that it's the highest rated game in the past 3 months! --second highest is Shaun White at 78%). So, seriously, how can you say that new, quality games are coming out "one after the other"? Please. I've looked at the aggregate ratings of all the games on each system. The best overall, according to the site, are 360, then PS3, then Wii is a distant 3rd--even when you only look at, say, the top-rated 30 games for each system. Don't believe me? See the unbias reviews for yourself at Gamerankings.com or Metacritic.com.

@teknicz Actually it's not even a matter of agreeing or disagreeing. If someone says "These games (such as the new FF) could possibly help increase their sales," that's a fact--they potentially could. It's not about being right or wrong. But instead you have stupid, immature fan boy haters who, just by hearing the name of a competing system, say/think something like "screw that, Sony and MS totally suxxxx Wii rullezzz 4 life yeah woo-hoo!" And I'm just expressing my disappointment in how stupid/immature those people are. I'm all about banter, but at least have a valid argument/point to what you're saying.

Nobody seems to understand that the Wii is a gimmick. It's cheap, and has good word of mouth. It won't be around much longer. Wii fit is a joke...it's for typical lazy americans who don't wanna go outside and enjoy the world.

This fricken site is filled with hardcore gamers and I see alot of bashing on Nintendo, even though they dominate in software and hardware sales. Talk is cheap. My uncle and his family recently bought Wii fit, and it's great to see that they all enjoy it. They never used to play video games. I think it's great what Nintendo is doing, and yet I'm satisfied with its library of hardcore games. The ps3 and 360 looks good, but I'm seeing alot of FPS games.

Wii Fit isn't an exercise in itself. It's just a series of movements, without stressing your body that much at all. Anyway, impressive sale numbers. Besides the Wii (which hasn't received an awesome game in almost a year), the 360 moves the software. That's the difference between the 360 and ps3 right now, the software. Sorry Sony, but Killzone isn't that big of a franchise to pull millions of ps3 off of store shelves. Even GTA (a once in a time PS exclusive) got more sales on the 360. Not being a fanboy over here, I'm just analyzing the facts. And a price drop sure would be nice on the ps3, but, in a slumping economy can anyone see that happening without people losing their jobs? Looks like 2009 isn't going to be the huge comeback of the ps3 after all. Maybe 2010...
