NPD: Wii Fit sells record 777,000 in January

US gaming industry sales climb 13 percent to $1.33 billion, led by Nintendo's fitness trainer; Left 4 Dead, Call of Duty, World Tour, Skate 2 among other top sellers.

Earlier today, the US Commerce Department delivered the semi-shocking news that total retail sales for January rose 1 percent, defying a six-month decline in growth and marking the biggest overall retail gains in 14 months. Of course, that percentage climb paled in comparison to the US gaming industry. Reporting on US software, hardware, and accessory sales today, the NPD Group revealed that industry revenues stood at $1.33 billion for January, a 13 percent climb from a year prior.

That's a lot of post-holiday squats...
That's a lot of post-holiday squats...

Falling in line with analysts' expectations, US software sales amounted to $676.6 million in January, a 10 percent increase over last January's $614.7 million haul. And as expected, Nintendo's Wii Fit absolutely clobbered the competition. The Balance Board-equipped fitness training game sold 777,000 units for the month, a figure that sets a new record for the most single-SKU sales in January.

All said, Nintendo once again dominated the software sales charts, having produced half of the top 10 games for the month. Perennial best-seller Wii Play with Remote posted an additional 415,000 units in January, securing it the second slot on the chart. Also a top seller last year, Mario Kart Wii scored the third position with 292,000 units. New Super Mario Bros. and Mario Kart DS, both for Nintendo's portable, landed in eighth and ninth positions, respectively, with sales of 135,000 and 132,000 units.

As for games that weren't exclusive to Nintendo's systems, the Valve-published, Electronic Arts-distributed Left 4 Dead for the Xbox 360 scored the top position, placing fourth with 243,000 units sold. Activision's Call of Duty: World at War followed at a close fifth, selling 235,000 units. EA and Activision battled it out for the sixth and seventh slots as well, with Guitar Hero World Tour on the Wii edging out Skate 2 on the Xbox 360, 199,000 units to 155,000. EA's Lord of the Rings: Conquest achieved sales of 113,000 units on the Xbox 360, rounding out the 10th slot in this month's chart.

NPD analyst Anita Frazier provided some color on the software sales, saying that the presence of catalog hits in the best-seller charts bodes well for continued industry growth in 2009. "Only two of the top 10 games this month were new releases," said Frazier. "The continued strength of games that have been in the market for some time clues us in to just how many new consumers are coming into the industry. This broadening of the audience for gaming will help buoy the industry through these tough economic times, provided they have enough compelling content to keep them interested."

Sales for Sony's console totaled 203,200 units on the month, a 25 percent year-over-year decline from the 269,000 units Sony sold in January 2008. Sales of the aging PlayStation 2 continued to dwindle, selling 101,200 units on the month, while the PSP sold 172,300 units in January.

Nintendo's Wii, on the other hand, greatly upped its performance from last year, taking top billing during the month with 679,200 units sold. The DS, too, turned in a stellar month, adding to its 96.22 million global lifetime sales with another 510,800 systems. After spiking during the holiday rush, Microsoft's Xbox 360 sold 309,000 systems on the month.

First congrats to Nintendo for the Wii( Even though I dont like it). My problem with this thing is the gaming business is one where the companies are trying to copy each other. For example XBL and PSN. No problem if Wii sales are good but suppose Microsoft or SONY goes for the same strategy the Wii is going for Casuals . Suppose the next XBOX or PS4 is something like the Wii more casual games less hardcore ones than we can pretty much expect titles like Halo and MGS4 will be dumb down to a casual party game than a full sequel.

Gaz9000 Posted Feb 13, 2009 5:05 pm GMT not a good start for the.. "year of the playstation" lol Well, from the majority of websites, the PS3 got more AAA titles in 2008 than the other consoles, yet it was third in sales. So even if it gets again more AAA titles in 2009, it will probably be third again.

Wii is an interesting phenomenon. It's games aren't particularly good as far as most gamers' standards go. But for some reason, people love swinging remote-controllers and balancing on a board. I guess the key for Next-Next Gen is to take the motion sensor technology and apply it to High-Quality Graphic games, like Crysis. Wii has the kiddie-factor nailed down, but there's an adult portion of the market that is being neglected in favor of the cutesy kiddie market. We need more zombie blasting/ninja fighting/modern combat motion-based games and less bouncy-bounce/Goomba stomping/tennis racket waving/Mario/Luigi/DonkeyKong stuff that is completely overdone and borderline obsolete. Take it to another level. Quit rehashing Mario all the time! Make some NEW Franchises to exploit!

Harerazer and the other irrational fanboys: you make me laugh, COD4 have a great single player campaign and everyone . Maybe you miss it because you were playing wii fit. FPS are all the same? ridiculous. So Bioshock is the same as Halo? The thing they have in common is that they are great games, that the wii doesn´t have.

@Pices I remember you post like 50 new games coming to the Wii. Before you post that, keep in mind we meant to GOOD games. Srry for the mis-understanding about that I know Nintendo does get things confused with what good games actually are these days ;). No worries though, I'll re-do your list of good games that'll be coming to the Wii: Legend of Zelda There you go, that looks like a much more accurate list.

@Noctobum Stop claiming that this game or that game will all of a sudden make 360/PS3 owners pick up a Wii. What an insult. We didn't pick our systems out of spite so don't even patronize, man. If Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 (overrated - even Wii owners didn't buy it), SSBB wasn't able to sway 360/PS3 owners, what makes you think an obscure SEGA game called Madworld will? It was the same thing with Disaster: Day of Crisis. Pumped up trailer, everyone was saying when that game comes out, all the hard-core gamers were gonna drop their pants. As soon as the 5/10 reviews came out for Disaster (what a disaster!), all the Wii fans tried to shove that game under the rug like it was a leper child. It's the same with Wii and PS3. Wait until this game, wait until this day, wait until things pick up, wait until , just wait, wait, wait. I am so sick of this. It's like the election playing all over again.

Wow, 154 comments and maybe three intelligent ones. Is there no end to this? I have a Wii and Wii Fit (bought it at launch) and while it did get the "play and sit" routine it's mostly because i was too damn lazy to keep it up. However, I'm not blaming that on Nintendo. My daughter and girlfriend used it regularly (2-3 times a week. Way more than any single game we have (and I own well over 100 PS3/Wii games). So while I myself didn't use it, it did get a regular workout. And that's the point, first off Wii Fit is not a "game" so you can't judge it by regular gaming standards. Secondly, if people are too lazy/fat/embarrased to use it then how can you blame the software/company? FPS games suck IMO but they're all over the chart. Is anyone complaining that nearly 80% of CoD players don't even bother finishing the main story mode? Shooter fans play shooters online first and foremost. So does that mean the game sucks because it fails to deliver a compelling storyline? How a game/software is enjoyed is academic if it sells. I'm sure everyone here would love to be getting Wii Fit royalties. Then we'd all be saying "Wii Fit is the killer app of the decade!" Oh, and I'm neither a woman or over 50 but I love my Wii. If Nin had an online presence equal to XBL the Wii would be the premiere "next gen" console. Oh,...it already is.

Oh surprise, it's once again Sony's consoles filling the bottom slots X3 I'm amazed people even buy PS2s at all now, there's nothing left coming out for that console whatsoever worth playing. I suppose it's all the disk-read-error failed PS2s that Sony won't support and people being forced to repurchase for their collection *sighs* Why is it that everyone acts so surprised at this outcome? Anyone with common sense could see that Sony were making so many errors with the PS3, at first it was funny, then it became quite frankly a farse. Releasing it 6 months late in Europe, not securing decent game releases, designing it with a too high per unit cost, failing to provide decent development tools to developers and quite frankly, missing the point. The PS3 was touted strongly as an all-encompassing media device, however a console being a media centre alone, won't sell it. It's got to have games, that's why it's a console. And for games, Sony have failed dismally. A few good AAA titles and a selection of mediocrity is all that's available to owners of the expensive grill-lookalike. Sony dropped the ball this generation, while Nintendo picked it up, and Microsoft continued business-as-usual (a few hiccups but otherwise sound and with good customer support).

First off, congratulations to the Wii. I knew they would still be leading, but I never knew by that much. MS still going strong. Most surprise to me was that the PS3 actually went down, and did not gain at all. The reason was because during this year, everytime I go to a Walmart or something, I saw so many people buying the PS3. Regardless it shows that Sony has to do something, whether it be a price cut (best thing to do) or better marketing. I believe that their marketing and high prices really hurt them. One can only wonder if the PS3 was sold for $200 - and launched earlier - what the figures would be. With people saying Sony will go down under - don't count themselves out just yet. Nintendo was usually last in the previous generations with the N64 and GC. Now they've bounced back and took the lead, with great planning, marketing, and different console playback. While the PS3 and 360 battled it out with the same type of technology, Wii came out with innovation and interactivity. Finally, I have all 3 systems and recently been playing the PS3 more - I've stopped playing Wii since SSBB, but I am looking forward to Madworld. There is going to be better games for the Wii to help fill everyone's niche, same with the PS3 this year. So everyone can be happy.

Spending 100 hours on a console a month doe's not make you a hardcore gamer, it just makes you a lonely geek!! Most of the so called hardcore gamers on here have no idea about anything. So the Wii is selling more than the PS3 and 360, So what, get a life and chill a bit. It's not the end of the world. So what is a hardcore gamer?

Its nice to see Nintendo doing well, although I'm not a fan of the Wii (its a little gimmicky for my taste and I'm not a fan of the game selection except for the bowling). Of course the entire so called Next Gen gaming that has come out with the Wii, PS3, and 360 just hasn't really caught my attention. I have one or two games for each system, and the rest of my purchases have been PC games (FPS games are not for the consoles, game developers!!!). Only one really good RPG (Lost Odyssey, a good diversion still not as good as some of the older FF series), and of course the same old Dynasty Warriors fix. I think I'm going to stick with PC gaming from now on, because at this rate nothing that is coming out on the consoles interests me this year. The only true Hardcore gamers are PC gamers. ~grin~

Sorry Bearded snowman, i have to disagree. I love my wii fit, its like drugs to me, and whats hardcore games for hardcore gamers, i see that every where on here. Are u all talking about those never ending first person shooters thats over flocking the videogame industry, cause thats all there seems to be lately. Sick of them. Every where u look, first person this, first person that, and basically they all play the same, you know why, cause they are in first person. Lol. Those are what i call Nausea games, well u all seem to love them so enjoy the hardcore gamings

wii fit is a thing a man buys the wife for christmas, so she apreciates it becuase if you got her a weight watches starter kit your fooked. the wii and ds has kinda just grabbed hold of the non gamer and succeeded. so it proves theres more people out there that want to wave a plastic thing at a screen than sit there with a 360 or ps3 and be like wow this game is amazing.

who cares any more. the wii is dominating the pack. no surprise here. nintendo should take all this money and start putting out there AAA titles. i haven't purchased a wii title in over a year, and i won't purchase a wii title until punch out. after that i am not seeing another decent title at all. Bring us Zelda or break out another original title that isn't a party game. My guess is January was good for the wii software sales do to x-mas wii's that were sold, and ppl are already bored w/ there wii sports. instead of buying wii fit or mario kart they should be picking up mario galaxy, metroid prime 3 and zelda: twilight princess, but as we all know those that are just now purchasing there wii's aren't in it for there SP killer titles.

@ iron zealot Those games are yet to be released (the ones I recently posted), they will be available in 2009. @ martinCaillou ........The Wii does have hardcore games. Despite the fact that 2008 wasn't a great year for the Wii except for SSBB, MK Wii and Wii Fit (yes,, I know Wii fit is casual but never mind). Look at how 2009 is shaping up for the Wii, trust me it'll be good, take a look at the list I posted. And the Wii currently has hardcore games like MP 3, Galaxy , SSBB , No More Heroes etc.

zensulu... how many hardcore games there were for the wii in 08???? The wii IS BAD for hardcore gamers, except for zelda, mario and metroid, and all this games are a year old at least. Wii is just for fun, for casual gamers. I own both Wii and xbox360, and 2008 gave me no reason to play the Wii again. At all.

In response to many comments, people got the Wii Fit with Wii Fitness, played it a few times, unlocked some stuff and then the Wii Balance Board sits under the TV (I know, because mine does too). BUT (big BUT here folks), they are developing games based on that success. There are snowboarding games and some other stuff that is out that does not excite me at all (though it may excite many), but that awesome Balance Board game could be out sometime this year. IF you combine the awesomeness of the Wii Balance Board and incorporate right into a game, perhaps an SSX or a Tony Hawk, well then you are going to have MORE BLOCKBUSTER success. Just a thought

@ Pices I'm not denying that the Wii has some good games. I just point out that there is almost nothing on the horizon that gamers would be interested in. Most of those games are a year or more old, and nintendo seems to have concluded that there is more money in "My Personal Trainer" than Mario Universe(or whatever it would be called)

After reading some peoples comments here I do find it rather funny that people seem to hate Nintendo for simply doing what they set out to do and they are making more money than anyone predicted doing it, and people saying that the Wii is bad for "true" or "hardcore" gamers is just being foolish, there are still alot of games in development for the Wii that would be considered big games if being developed for either the PS3 or Xbox360, but will get slated by closed minded people for being bad just since it is on the Wii and they hate it for being sucessfull and something they don't like because it is sucessful for a different reason to what has made consoles sucessful in the past. Oh well I am sure Nintendo wont mind at one person hating their products just because it is doing so well wehn there are 10 people waiting to buy it in return, to be fair this generating of consoles as seen a turnaround not seen in the overall market share since Sony entered, if I remember correctly most were saying that both Sony and Microsoft would be the two one battling it out at the top of the sales charts and not much being able to seperate them, I think it is great for Nintendo to be able to get so much profit just by not doing what everyone else is and going a different route.

Okay, so the Wii doesn't have games some people like because the games on the Wii do not stack up against those on the PS3 and the Xbox360. We're comparing two different products here, really. Sony and Microsoft chose to go with graphical power, Nintendo chose to go with entertainment/innovation. The Wii was not designed to compete with the other two brands. It was designed to reach a larger consumer base than it ever has. Besides, let's face it, if you would have had a Wii back in 1985 or 1995, you would have thought the games were great. I can think of dozens of titles from that time period that paled in comparison to the titles on the Wii that were incredibly popular. If you don't like the games, then the Wii isn't for you. I have a Wii, and there are games I still play on it. I also have an Xbox360 and a PS3. Right now, I am playing games on the PS3. At times I switch consoles and play something else. One other thing to think about is that there are people out there who obviously like the Wii better than the other consoles. That's their choice, not yours, and Nintendo should be commended for keeping the market alive. In a dwindling world economy, Nintendo is taking care of business, while other companies keep posting losses.

The phrase "console war" was all we heard last generation and was coined up by Sony fanboys. I know that now because I haven't heard the phrase this generation :P.

@ JackHoleFace You're the one who makes me sick. I agree that there weren't big Wii titles on 2008 except SSBB, MK Wii and Wii Fit. But hey, look at the games of 2009 that I listed.

You saw Gamecube Fanboys (which are the majority of the Wii fanboys now) you saw PS3 fanboys and you saw Dreamcast Fanboys defending their own console till the end.. If you ask a PS2 fanboy he will say gamecube had like 1 game.. If you ask a gamecube fanboy he will say gamecube was actually better then PS2... So please stop pretending like the overall quality of a lineup is determined by your taste or of some aggregate of some industry critics.. Those critics and analysts where the same people that predicted the PSP will rule the DS and the Wii will be a niche product. The result was the total opposite which leads me to the conclusion that they knew nothing about the industry at all..
