NPD: Wii Fit sells record 777,000 in January

US gaming industry sales climb 13 percent to $1.33 billion, led by Nintendo's fitness trainer; Left 4 Dead, Call of Duty, World Tour, Skate 2 among other top sellers.

Earlier today, the US Commerce Department delivered the semi-shocking news that total retail sales for January rose 1 percent, defying a six-month decline in growth and marking the biggest overall retail gains in 14 months. Of course, that percentage climb paled in comparison to the US gaming industry. Reporting on US software, hardware, and accessory sales today, the NPD Group revealed that industry revenues stood at $1.33 billion for January, a 13 percent climb from a year prior.

That's a lot of post-holiday squats...
That's a lot of post-holiday squats...

Falling in line with analysts' expectations, US software sales amounted to $676.6 million in January, a 10 percent increase over last January's $614.7 million haul. And as expected, Nintendo's Wii Fit absolutely clobbered the competition. The Balance Board-equipped fitness training game sold 777,000 units for the month, a figure that sets a new record for the most single-SKU sales in January.

All said, Nintendo once again dominated the software sales charts, having produced half of the top 10 games for the month. Perennial best-seller Wii Play with Remote posted an additional 415,000 units in January, securing it the second slot on the chart. Also a top seller last year, Mario Kart Wii scored the third position with 292,000 units. New Super Mario Bros. and Mario Kart DS, both for Nintendo's portable, landed in eighth and ninth positions, respectively, with sales of 135,000 and 132,000 units.

As for games that weren't exclusive to Nintendo's systems, the Valve-published, Electronic Arts-distributed Left 4 Dead for the Xbox 360 scored the top position, placing fourth with 243,000 units sold. Activision's Call of Duty: World at War followed at a close fifth, selling 235,000 units. EA and Activision battled it out for the sixth and seventh slots as well, with Guitar Hero World Tour on the Wii edging out Skate 2 on the Xbox 360, 199,000 units to 155,000. EA's Lord of the Rings: Conquest achieved sales of 113,000 units on the Xbox 360, rounding out the 10th slot in this month's chart.

NPD analyst Anita Frazier provided some color on the software sales, saying that the presence of catalog hits in the best-seller charts bodes well for continued industry growth in 2009. "Only two of the top 10 games this month were new releases," said Frazier. "The continued strength of games that have been in the market for some time clues us in to just how many new consumers are coming into the industry. This broadening of the audience for gaming will help buoy the industry through these tough economic times, provided they have enough compelling content to keep them interested."

Sales for Sony's console totaled 203,200 units on the month, a 25 percent year-over-year decline from the 269,000 units Sony sold in January 2008. Sales of the aging PlayStation 2 continued to dwindle, selling 101,200 units on the month, while the PSP sold 172,300 units in January.

Nintendo's Wii, on the other hand, greatly upped its performance from last year, taking top billing during the month with 679,200 units sold. The DS, too, turned in a stellar month, adding to its 96.22 million global lifetime sales with another 510,800 systems. After spiking during the holiday rush, Microsoft's Xbox 360 sold 309,000 systems on the month.

Halo Wars, Resident Evil 5, and Street Fighter 4 pretty much guarantee that Xbox 360 will once again be #1 in the Software category very soon. Each of those games and the incredible Co-Op modes that they offer both online and offline will generate millions of sales. Wii is going to remain #1 in terms of hardware sales for quite a while, though, because the market for children, female, and old people is so much larger than the markets that Xbox 360 and PS3 target--the young men and the hardcore gamers.

"People moaned for years about third party support. Well, you're getting it eventually. But this is the price you have to pay - deal with it and stop whingeing" Quofan, you forget that Nintendo has been promising improved 3rd party support since the 90's (and the N64 era). As for the rest of your argument, it's relatively contradictory. You say that touters of the PS1 and 2 are hypocrites, but ignore the fact that both systems' libraries were, for the majority of the time, solely third party populated.

lordrave... 1) proper pronunciation prevents poor performace. 2) You normally get what you pay for. In terms of WiiFit, as a fitness professional myself, I can tell you that you are getting less than what you pay for. For anyone legitimately serious about exercise and getting back on the healthy track, WiiFit is not the way to go about it. In its scope (with its body coach or not), WiiFit is extremely limited in terms of cardiovascular and nutritional usefulness. If a casual gamer is truly interested in fitness education and training, there are countless FREE websites out there (exrx.net, training.fitness.com) that are far more effective at true fitness tutoring. Long story short, if an individual is truly sincere about health and nutrition, they will discover in short order that WiiFit is greatly lacking.

I hope the next big seller is wiiFat. basically, the disc would come bundled with a deep fryer wiiMote attachment and it would tell you when to shake what's in the basket. i bet wiiFat's revenues would blow these numbers out of the water

Research Wii Fit more.. *dumb ppl* It's not just about moving ur body.. The game got a Virtual sound Coach that tutor everynow and then.. Many modes and more. If im not wrong, personal body/work-out tutor cost more than the price of this games.. Regardless of what you *immature* said about Wii *this* and *that* It wont affect any interest casual gamers to stop buying it.

So much bitterness. Just because theyre fanboys and their consoles arent selling. Sad really..... Shovelware does not sell as well as people claim. Besides, if you want to slag off "casual" consoles, slag off the PS1 & PS2. Especially the PS1. The reason the PS2 had so many quality games was down to the brand recognition and therefore sales of both PS consoles. Companies went where the money is. But that didnt mean that because the PS2 was weak it wasnt capable of good games. Nintendo's Wii did not have that advantage, hence many companies were caught off guard by its success. The same thing happened to the DS, and now it gets heaps of quality titles. It doesn not take a couple of months to build success back up after two generations of terrible third party support. It takes a generation if you do something drastic. Nintendo did. People moaned for years about third party support. Well, you're getting it eventually. But this is the price you have to pay - deal with it and stop whingeing Funny how hypocritical my fellow "hardcore" gamers can be. You can criticise the Wii, but not the PS1 or PS2 for the same problem? Bizarre

Well, it's nice to see that all is not gloom and doom in the gaming world. At least Nintendo's doing well. It would be delicious irony if Nintendo ended up carrying the gaming industry through hard times, when it seems like every game company is doing mass layoffs or going bankrupt. It's the 80's all over again. And bravo, puppiemaster. Couldn't have said it better myself. loves FPS's, and people shouldn't be pissed on because they don't. Mind you, Wii Fit is not my cup of tea, but I like the Wii, whichPeople who were never into gaming love the Wii, because frankly, not everyone has the promise of Dragon Quest X and maybe an all-new Resident Evil (and hopefully a real Resident Evil instead of a light-gun-shooter), and Mario Kart is always good for some entertainment. And bravo to puppiemaster. Couldn't have said it better myself. I gt so sick of people bashing the Wii and bashing Wii owners, especially the "new gamers." Making derisive comments about soccer moms and casual **** is supposed to help improve the public image of video gaming and make people want to play video games?

I believe I'm a more loyal Nintendo gamer than most, I own every system they have released including japanese exclusives and have over 1000 cartridges etc and I don't believe that Nintendo is screwing so called hardcore gamers, I still manage to play my Wii and bought HOTD OK for it today, I'm really happy with my Wii, It is BC with Gamecube and has the VC which is better than the XBox and PS versions. + My wife who has put up with me buying consoles for the last 20 years actually likes playing it as well. This has in turn opened her up to gaming and little by little she is playing more each month. Just over 2 years ago she had no interest at all, now she plays the Wii, has her own DS, plays LBP and Singstar on the PS3 and even has her own Gamertag on the 360 and has completed the Co-op on COD WAW and played online with me at COD4 ( she even managed to kill more than she died). So to my main point, knock the Wii all you want, but it gets people into gaming, it's a good entry point. My wife doe's not care how powerful the console is or how many FPS is can run smoothly at with 10000 zombies on the screen, she just cares about having FUN. Most people buy games to have FUN, without that factor you wont sell, now the Wii is selling more because the games are easy to play and non-gamers are able to pick up and play without feeling a complete idiot, as I said this is a good entry point into the gaming universe and with time people get more comfortable with the controllers and in turn have FUN being able to actually play the games. But so called Hardcore Gamers feel that its a casual gamers console, you are partly right, because people that have never played consoles before have bought 1 (the FUN factor), but 'so called' hardcore gamers have also bought 1 (I own 2), 1 for the TV room, 1 for my gaming room. Now counting myself as a 'Hardcore Gamer' due to the fact that I own every console 'major' released since 1978 (for my sins I even own a working Vortex and 2 Atari Sunnydales) and have over 5000 games on all formats, + I study all of the gaming news, have been to E3 4 times, to Japan lots of times with my work and spent hours buying toys in Akihabara + I spent my time at college and Uni doing Computer Science in the 80's. Now is that Hardcore enough?

I always assumed Sony's PS3 would pick up and overtake the 360 by the end on 09 but the chances of that happening are unlikely IMO and the chances of Sony overtaking MS before the next gen systems from MS/Nintendo and/or Sony(depending on what there plan is with this 10 year cycle stuff, i still think they will have a console ready to release around the same time MS sticks out it's next gen system as i doubt they want to give them a year head start again, who know's what the next gen will bring, it could be crazy, MS may stick out a more family friendly system and so may sony and that would deverstate me, i like hardcore big budget games and i want Sony and MS to be pushing technology with every new system, so hopefully PS3 will get a price cut before KZ2 and that will start off a good run for 2009 with the killer app GOW3 coming i am thinking this will be Sony's saviour, KZ2 has the potential to sell systems but not like GOW3 has, there's probably aload of PS2 owners waiting to upgrade and GOW3 will be one game that should sell systems big style, and if sony could get a proper Gran Turismo 5 out this year(doubtful) then 2009 really could be the year of the PS3 as those two games have massive system selling power if they could get those two games out for fall 09 along with other promising titles such as heavey rain and infamous they could really do some catching up, but on the other hand 360 is cheap and seemingly allot more of a stable system with a quality diverse library of games and some big hitters for 09 thereself with a few things up there sleve im sure, halo 3:recon will be massive but i doubt it will sell systems, but at the price i doubt selling systems is going to be a problem for ms this year, Alan Wake could be a ground breaking game IMO that and heavey rain are my most anticipated titles, FF13 should do very well on 360 it will be fun to see who sales figures for ff13 turn out will the 360 users buy more copies than the ps3 owner's, i am thinking they probabl will as the install base is bigger in the U.S but FF has been seen as a PS franchise for awhile now, i think i am more interested in seeing ff vs 13 on ps3 than the normal ff13 game. Well i am sure it's going to be another crazy year for us gamer's, i own all systems and there's plenty of games i want for 360/ps3/pc this year and even a couple of wii games(yay i never bought one wii game last year its been a dust collector for 12 months). i would like to see the wii drop off a bit, im not a hater, i support what nintendo are doing for the industry i just felt like they abandned the hardcore last year completly but it looks like there trying to make up for that in 09 and with a zelda and mario in the works im starting to feel some love for ninty again, although i would like to see 360 and ps3 sell more unit's and see the wii drop off a bit, so hopefully 3rd parties will pull there finger out and stop putting out shovelware.

@Pices Nintendo has shown a poor example of succeeding. It's fine and all to expand by appealing to new consumers, but to shaft your old loyal fanbase at the same time is a bad idea. The comparison I made between the shovelware Wii line and Nintendo's AAA 1st party titles is an example why 3rd parties can't survive unless they are forced with the only option to make mini-game compilations or port PS2/GC titles with tacked-on controls. My last sentence wasn't aimed at you, but instead those who laugh at Sony even though they are trying to please consumers by putting in more effort than Nintendo has this gen. They just need to work on marketing a little more and hopefully lower the price the price of the PS3 without taking a loss in the process. And the other users are correct. The huge list of upcoming titles you posted for the Wii is mostly composed of shovelware. I saw at least 5 good games in there.

Urgh, why do people buy this stuff? If you want to lose weight, go outside and do some actual exercising. I can burn more weight putting a stair climber in front of my PS3 than I can doing Wii Fit, lol.

@CorruptGamer x Unlike some companies, Nintendo does what it takes to succeed as a business and that is to make profit. Its aim is not to make "manly" or "bloody" games. Its a smart thing for them to develop such Wii titles because its even attracting non-gamers, its increasing its consumer base. I'm not laughing at MS or Sony and I never said anything about them. They've got great games. Who cares about sales? I wouldn't start whining if Little Big Planet or Viva Pinyatta outsold Galaxy or SSBB because its no big deal for me. As for the people who said that my list suck, well its rightfully your opinion. Deadly Creatures got 7;5s-8s which is great, and I see a light down the tunnel for Wii because 2009 will be dominated.

Pices Posted Feb 13, 2009 4:19 pm GMT It's called a sense of humor. Get one. My argument isn't pointless at all either. If you weren't addicted to SHOVELWARE, you would understand what's really going on. Wii Fit: 15,570,000 Wii Play: 21,630,000 (Bundled with Wii Remote) Wii Music: 2,360,000 How is if possible for 3 games that suck ass to sell this much copies? This proves that the casuals have no taste in games and would buy ANYTHING the Wii offers. There's more. I always see every Wii fanboy on this site claim that Mario, Zelda and Metroid are the best games on the Wii. Why is it that all three of these classics are being outsold by garbage? Twilight Princess: 5,190,000 Mario Galaxy: 7,760,000 Metroid Prime 3: 1,500,000 Quick Summary: Wii Play: 21,630,000 > Mario Galaxy: 7,760,000 Wii Fit: 15,570,000 > Twilight Princess: 5,190,000 Wii Music: 2,360,000 > Metroid Prime 3: 1,500,000 I think Nintendo would be better off porting GameCube versions of three franchises with tacked-on controls like they intended too in the first place, instead of making new ones from "scratch". Laugh at Sony all you want but at least they make REAL games for the hardcore unlike Nintendo who likes to take shortcuts and create half-assed games.

Pices. I love how black and white you view is on casual gamers, plus I love how inaccurate your list is(half of those games have no release date and most of them won't even sell.) Casual gamers,What do you know about them, nothing. Because casual gamers aren't gamers, they're people that don't play games, they buy Wii-fit,Wii-sports and Mario Kart Wii for novelty purposes not for games. If they cared anything about games then these three titles wouldn't be the top sellers of the machine. Oh and why isn't Mario Galaxy selling?

@bearded_snowman People who buy Wii Fit play it once and never play it again. When was the last time you asked someone what they were playing and they said "I'm really into Wii Fit"??? NEVER. **************************************************** I'll have to say, that's pretty true. I still have mine, but haven't used it in many months. Been too busy playing all the great XBox 360 games. I also have a gym membership and my wife and I started going on a regular basis, so I don't use Wii Fit anymore. I may pull it out again over the weekend, just to check my stats today compared to 6 months ago. I still like the Wii, I just can't find a lot of time to play it. Same with the PS3, even though I did play the Killzone 2 demo, but I haven't touched LBP much.

I can think of much better games that need to be on that list of top selling software. I have to say though, it's a good time to be selling unused copies of Wii Fit. I only just tonight sold mine on Ebay for 100 quid. Easy money from the idiot non-gamers. I bought the thing for 70 quid after all. hahahahaha.

No PS3 game in the Top 10 for the PS3. What happened to LBP and Resistance 2? Even the PS3 sales were down about 23% from last year. That's not good. Nintendo still continues to dominate after just over 2yrs. XBox 360 is holding steady with the sales. Looks like their sales this year will surpass last years, but we'll see. The economy isn't getting any better, but the 360 is dirt cheap at just $199 for the 360 Arcade. Those new Arcades have the Jasper motherboard in their with the cooler GPU & CPU chips. RROD should be a thing of the past from now on. Software lineup looks very good for this year. Killzone 2 looked decent and Star Ocean IV, Halo Wars should be a hit on the 360. I know Nintendo has some nice titles on the way like Mad World, Mario Tennis & FF: Crystal Chronicles. First half of 2009 should be nice.

@Pices - that list is a little mediocre. I mean if you only own a Wii then great, go for it, but there are much better proper games being released for the 360 and PS3 and if you own one of those then those Wii titles aren't worth the money. Plus Red Steel 2 hasn't been confirmed as a Wii exclusive and obviously the superior HD version of Dead Space is already available.

HAHAHA. What is Wii Fit anyway...since there aren't any left in any store . Be serious people and realize Wii Fit isn't an exercising game. People won't lose weight with Wii fit. They're just getting to pose and do all sorts of random things. For real exercise, go outside and walk or jog, or get into a gym for pete's sake.

Pices... those may be "awesome" games. Or they may not deliver. Will Punch Out deliver the kind of fun that the original did, without feeling like the same game? Will MadWorld deliver on the build-up? Will Dead Space still be able to deliver it's incredible environment (the aspect that made the game what it was) on a weaker system with an effective Wiimote control system? These are all questions that cannot be answered until we get to play these games. Much like PS3 owners who hyped up Killzone2 E3 and gameplay footage years before we knew if it would deliver, you're doing the same to these games here. Particularly with third party offerings having to code for such a unique control scheme, something that they've all but really failed to deliver on, it isn't wise to count the chickens before they've hatched.

Pices, it's all well and good to list every future Wii game from here to kingdom come... but when it comes down to it, third party offerings up until this point have largely been failures, and many of the first-party offerings you've listed have no set release dates, only shadowy Nintendo mentions at various pressers for other games. While I think that some of the 2009 third party games look solid, I am not willing to hold those up like some sort of trophy until I've had the chance to play them, and you should consider doing the same.

@Pices I have played some Wii games, Mario Galaxy included. Let me edit the good games coming out for Wii this year: Legend of Zelda, Pikmin 3, Mario (which I think it's coming out early next year not exactly sure). Geez dude the list keeps growing and growing . Yea dude the line-up is looking great, if only there were more than 3 games that will actually do good ;).

@ moose knuckler You obviously haven't played any. ;) don't stoop that low, so stop trolling and play them. You're saying that Pikmin 3 and Mario will be crap? That line-up is great.

Honestly what is with you people with this serious hate-on for the Wii. Every month it's the same thing. All you do is make the same comments that didn't make anymore sense than when they were posted some 2 years ago. And they always comes from those people who claim to be 'serious' or "real" gamers. Thing is no real gamer would ever think that a game or a gaming system is only as good as it's graphics. A real gamers knows what a gaming system is capable of. A real gamer knows that a good game is not based on what system the game runs on.

yes, Nintendo is quite genius. They took a console that with a regular controller, would compare to a PS2. Seriously. They are genius. Not only is the console cheap, but it's also cheap to develop games for. They focused more on marketing and tactics than the actual console, and apparently, it works. Hurray for the devolution of gaming!

i hope that next gen all systems put out shovelware and fitness software instead of fps/rpgs/action/platforming...so that we can then see how all these ppl cheering for the casual games selling so well will react. only reason it seems perfectly fine right now is because most have either 360/ps3 or both. i guarantee we will see this "fad" grow now that it's bringing in the big $$$. I can't frickin' wait!

deadkingdg: "No matter what you played, you cannot deny that Nintendo is marketting the Wii as a casual system and that it reached many casual gamers." I've not denied that. I'm only pointing out that there are plenty of hardcore gamers (like me) who also like the system.

Charlie901, that is pretty pathetic that you have to combine 3 Sony console sales to be able to even compare it to 360 sales. Another unsurprising month though. Wii 1st, 360 2nd, PS3 dead last as usual. No PS3 games in the top 10... nothing new here.

Agreed. Weight loss New Year resolutions likely assisted the sales numbers.

@Charlie901 I don't think you understand how sales work. If it takes Sony 3 different types of hardware sales to beat 360 1 type of hardware, that means Sony isn't doing too hot. Although PS2 and PS3 were only a few thousand sales short of tying 360 I'm just trying to show how stupid Charlie901's comment was.

@dzimm hardcore is more about the amount of effort that you put in you games, rather than the effort. No matter what you played, you cannot deny that Nintendo is marketting the Wii as a casual system and that it reached many casual gamers.

I was playing games in the arcades long before there was such a thing as a home computer. When the NES came out, I laughed because I already owned the best gaming system in the world: the Commodore 64. I've been building my own gaming PCs for years. I carry a Nintendo DS with me to work and get in a few minutes of gaming during downtimes. I've played hundreds (possibly thousands) of games from pretty much every genre you can imagine. Does that qualify me as a hardcore gamer? Good, because I think the Wii is awesome, and all you "hardcore" kiddies need to shut the hell up. :D

Charlie901 "Sony's profits are looking good!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Problem is : Sony doesn't make profit from PS3 sales, and it outsold the PS2 and PSP. MS and Sony makes most of their profit from game sales. I don't see any PS3 games in the top sales on January.

"hatieshorrer Posted Feb 13, 2009 5:16 pm GMT X360 had more tripple A titles in 2008 the PS3 had more upcoming tripple A titles by E3 but some more were announced for the X360 and released before the end of the year." I'm not talking about my personal opinions, I'm just talking about the number of games with a 9+ on Gamestats.com. Even if games like Fallout 3 and GTAIV were better on X360, they are still ranked as AAA on PS3.
