NPD: Fable II hits 1.2M in US, MGS4 goes platinum

Final 2008 sales figures paint mixed picture for PS3, 360 exclusives, as Resistance 2, Little Big Planet score 600K while Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts unscrews only 140K.

When industry research firm the NPD Group released its final 2008 sales figures earlier this month, the US software best-seller list was topped by four Wii titles. The remote-bundled Wii Play was the top title of the year with 5.28 million units, followed by Mario Kart Wii (5.0 million units), the balance-board-accompanied Wii Fit (4.53 million units), and Super Smash Bros. Brawl (4.17 million units). In fact, according to recent NPD data analysis by industry site Gamasutra, 49 percent of all games sold in the US last year were for a Nintendo console.

The Wii's domination of the software charts pushed almost every exclusive for another console out of the top 10 list. The sole exception was Gears of War 2 for the Xbox 360. The sequel to Epic Games' highly regarded Blockbuster sold just over 2.31 million copies, thanks to rave reviews, a dedicated fan base, and Microsoft's massive marketing machine.

No Caption Provided

Though Gears 2's success was no surprise, given the steady drumbeat of sales-milestones announcements, it was less clear how Xbox 360 exclusives outside the top 10 fared. NPD provided final 2008 US sales figures to GameSpot for two 360-only titles from Microsoft's internal studio system: Lionhead's Fable II and Rare's Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. The difference between the two was striking: The former RPG sold 1.2 million units, while the latter eked out a mere 140,000 units in US sales (a fact that isn't stopping Banjo-Tooie from hitting Xbox Live in April). According to the story mentioned above, 360 and original Xbox games made up 19 percent of US software sales in 2008.

No Caption Provided

The year's top PlayStation 3 exclusive didn't quite match Gears 2, a fact to be expected given the console's smaller installed base and its one fewer year on the market. Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, GameSpot's 2008 Game of the Year, was the biggest exclusive for Sony's platform, racking up over 1 million in domestic sales. In June, Sony Computer Entertainment president and CEO Kaz Hirai said the game had sold 3 million units worldwide in the two weeks after its release. Some 500,000 copies of MGS4 sold in Japan during its debut week, while 775,000 units were bought during its first 18 days on the US market.

No Caption Provided

Unfortunately for Sony, its first-party PS3 exclusives didn't fare quite as well. Despite substantial hype and solid reviews, Media Molecule's quirky platformer Little Big Planet sold only 611,000 units in the US--just less than half its global 1.3 million total. Insomniac's Resistance 2, which wowed critics as much as rival Gears 2, sold only about 600,000 units in the US. Sony game sales--including the PS3, PSP, and still-strong PlayStation 2--made up 32 percent of last year's software sales, according to Gamasutra's NPD breakdown.

@Gelugon_baat Indeed it is, the MGS4 DLC has been out for a while now. @_JPH_ Smaller fan base = less sales.

@ sendmn Ken Kutagari is not the gaming god you proclaim. Do you know the real story behind the origins of the Playstation? It started with Nintendo. Nintendo wanted to make a game system that incorporated CD's, so they went to Sony and asked them to develop this system, dubbed the SNES-CD. However, years later, in 1991, the Nintendo president read the written agreement and decided that Sony had too many rights with the SNES-CD, so they abandoned the project and instead teamed with Phillips. This unholy arrangement spawned the CD-i, but that's a story for another day. Sony took the system they had been developing for Nintendo and instead finished it as a product owned wholly by Sony. Thus was the Playstation born. So really, Ken Kutaragi only did what Nintendo, then the higher-ups at Sony, told him to do. Fast forward to 2006 with the release of the PS3. The way you talk about the dismissal of Kutaragi makes it seem like he's the innocent being picked on by the bullies at Sony. Well, Kutaragi said some pretty damn stupid things. He constantly mocked Microsoft and Nintendo for no reason other than they're the competition. In sports movies, that guy's the villain. He said that the Playstation 3 is not a gaming machine. He said people want a Playstation 3, regardless of how many extra hours they will need to work to get it. And remember, Sony didn't fire him. They merely put him in a place where he won't say any of these stupid things to the press. No, I'm not sad to see Ken Kutaragi go. He was an arrogant, ignorant moron who happened to sell Nintendo on a CD system 20 years ago.

Well this news doesn't really surprise me. I'm not one of the fanboys. But i bought a 360 in nov of 06. I have yet to see anything on the playstation 3 that warrants a purchase. With how expensive this gen is, and how money is tight for most people. Myself included, I haven't seen anything that could get me to purchase a second console. Last gen i owned all three, i had planned on getting them again. But, they would have to do something major in the game department. For me to say, yes ill spend the money on the console. Because a blu- ray player isn't going to be a buy point for me. I have netflix streamed on my player, and can rent the movies in HD from Video marketplace. No need to spend on the player, if my 360 already has the capabilitys.

I can't imagine that the same people that loved MGS would love BLP... There is no similarity and MGS has way bigger following... for instance GameSpot has never reported a rumor involving BLP being porting to the 360...

I think Sony needs to put some serious marketing behind Killzone. If they can hype it up enough, it could be successful. Halo and GoW are examples of good games made great by a rampant fan base and media control.

Marketing... plain and simple... 360 exclusives do well because Microsoft sponsors huge add campaigns... the weeks before and during the Gears 2 launch... almost every station during every commercial... there was a gears 2 commercial... but not once have I ever seen a MGS4 commercial... so the only people who know about most PS3 games on people who use sites like this and/or gaming magazines... But a casual gamer who doesn't use these features just so happens to see a gears 2 commercial and get interested... bingo... he is at the store picking up a copy... Most people don't want to drop $60 on a game they know nothing about... So just seeing the box on a store shelf isn't enough to warrant a buy for most people...

I love my 360 as much as my PS3 (never thought I would) and have no idea why I didn't buy one earlier lol. Besides...I like my ninja theory :o

My problems with the PS3 are the price, and the amount of time it takes them to make games. Games like Gran Turismo, Killzone 2, and FFXIII were games mentioned at the PS3 launch and neither of the 3 have come out yet. Gran Turismo is TBA for 2009 (I personally doubt that it will come out this year), its been announced that FFXIII wont come out til 2010, and Killzone 2 is finally coming in February (2 years and some change after its first "tech demo" in 2006). During the same time, 360's Gears of War and its sequel have come and gone; Halo 3 has come and gone (spinoffs in progress); Forza 2, Fable 2, Project Gotham, ect. have all come and gone. I also think that PS3 and 360 (more so the 360) wasted effort on this "format war" between Bluray and HDDVD. It is beneficial for the PS3 since it was a cheaper Bluray player. This is just my opinion, but I think that the life of Bluray will not last long as a movie format because digital downloads will take over (they are starting to become popular thru iTunes, Netfix, ect.). Just my opinion.

to LinktheCloud: The chord in the back of the 360 that goes to the power brick may have been loose, maybe? I know the other day I plugged my 360 in and it had 3 red lights and I almost **** a brick. But than I made sure everything in the back was properly plugged in, turned out the power brick chord was loose. I fixed it, and turned it back on, and it was just fine. Needless to say I was pretty darnnn relieved.

And yes, MS pays for exclusive DLC. Don't be so sour about it. If you wanna support Sony buy their games and hope that your support gets them back on track, OR buy MS and its DLC. Is it underhanded? Perhaps. But do you remember the Sega Dreamcast? Didn't think so. Sony had the most money than and they spent Sega out of business. This is the only reason Sony will survive they used the same tactics against the Dreamcast, by the end of this gen, it'll be even between (or pretty close to anyway) the 360 and PS3. Its part of business, I don't hold it against MS at all.

These are just US sales figures, and in case you haven't noticed, consumer spending was way down last year in the US. Globally, the numbers are pretty good for PS3 game sales. 1.3 million copies isn't bad at all for Little Big Planet, a game that didn't cost much to develop (more $ spent on promotion for it), and MGS moving 4.5 million globally is excellent. The system outsells 360 in Europe and Japan. The PS3 has sold over 20 million units so far. Consoles that sell this much do not go away. All these doom and gloom comments, the ridiculous Sega comparisons (Sega was never a huge global consumer electronics giant like Sony, and Sega's lifetime console sales are about 3% that of Sony over the last 14 years of the PS brand) are hilarious. Relax - the slow economy is tearing Sony a new one, but this company is simply too huge to go away, their stake in the games industry too important.

at joivet: Once more. Sony has used cash to keep devs from putting games on other systems. They have used cash to get pull from game mags. What comes around goes around. Sony has done some evil stuff. Look at the people that lost there jobs at sega when they made systems. But every one wants to cry over Sony. It's pay backs and you get them 7 times harder. I just think think its funny that its ok for Sony to give cash out to keep games onthere system but its bad and evil that MS is doing the same. Noobs sony doesnt pay other developers for exclusives. they even said it themsleves. so far many of the exclusives that have come out for it are from its own developers. the magazine thing, i cant be too sure about, you may have me there. but it is common sense that the 360 games would sell more since more people have 360s than ps3's. i think if ps3 sales pick up, then they would be more rounded out. until then sony needs to plan their next move carefully. i dont want them to go down like snk with their neogeo.

Funny story about my 360. I bought both a Wii and a PS3 on their respective launch dates and haven't had troubles. I didn't get a 360 until this holiday...I decided I didn't want to miss out on the 360's great exclusives (I buy ALL multi-platform games on my PS3). The first couple weeks I logged alot of hours on it (an elite model) with no problems. Then, one day, RRoD, I wasn't really miffed or anything (was under warranty), so I ordered a repair, after doing (and checking) everything they told me to. It literally was bricked for the next two days. On the third day I came home, and I don't remember why but I decided to turn it on...it worked. At this point, I tested it further, left it on for 12 hours straight, then turned it off and on...It worked perfectly fine. In fact the console was running quieter...and cooler than before the RRoD. So I went online to cancel the repair order, and no order existed for my console (even though I got all the info e-mails and stuff). I haven't had any issues at all with the system since than. I swear 1 of 2 things happened: 1.Microsoft hired Ninjas to break into my home and repair it. 2. My PS3 has enough reliabilty for both consoles. Anyway, I have to say I don't prefer either system more at the moment, I believe that the year that MS had as a sole Next Gen system was a major advantage because developers jumped on board quicker. This year, is looking incredible for my PS3, and only mediocre for my 360; HOWEVER, lucky me I never owned a X-Box in the past so all those exclusives (Mass Effect, Fable 2, Gears of War, Tales of Vesperia current favs) are like brand new to me, so it's gonna be far from a bad year for my X-Box too :D. My Wii however has a bleak, bleak outlook, with Mad World being the ONLY title on it I want this year. At the moment I play the PS3/360 evenly and barely touch the Wii. It'll be the same this year.......except for the couple of months after Killzone 2s release I played the beta, which was like E-Heroin (shame I just quit the E-Crack known as WoW...oh well what can you do) and I expect the release to be better. At the moment my console rankings are: 1. X-Box 360 (It is a more polished system at the moment, especially the online, I can see why so many like it, very user friendly) 2. PS3, a close second, it is my prefered platform, but the 360 gets the most attention now. 3. Wii, unless I have many friends over for Brawl, I don't touch it. After this year: 1. PS3 (KEEEELLLLZOOOOONEEEEE TOOOOO) 2. X-Box 360 I've looked at some of this years exclusives (haven't looked for them all) and don't seem that appealing, still once I get my ass into Wal-Mart to get Gears 2 I am sure I'll still be playing it). 3. Wii....Mad World?

MGS 4 sales seem low for a game that cost so much to make. PS3 sales overall are huge disappointment especially Little Big Planet which was a very good game. Sony need to do something fast or it will be heading to a Sega-like destiny.

@Tommy8930 (i got to say microsoft kind of stole) Its called making deals. Sony has done it long before MS was into game systems. Sony payed or as you would call it stole games from Sega And N64. They payed the big cash to keep things on PS only. Pablo620. I can give you a list of 50+ games that Sony payed to keep them off of sega's 32 bit system. Sony has done this long before MS started xbox. Sony even handed cash to mags, thats way more PS ads and other things PS were all over the place. At the time of the PS1, the net was not a big thing. People went to the store and got game mags. Sony used alot of cash on mags. So before people say MS is evil over giving cash to devs to have games that would have stayed on PS, They need to know that Sony has done the same but ever more times than MS. That is the truth.

I am not going to lie, Sony needs to just stop making the PS3 because they are clearly not selling games or systems at the rate of their competitors. XBOX 360 does have an advantage because it came out a year earlier, so everyone got that first. I would not care to buy a PS3 if I had an Xbox 360 because most, if not all, goods games come out for both systems. The only thing XBOX does not have is MGS, but they have everything else. And LBP just seems like a happy g*y fairy tail game which has no interest to me making its exclusivity unimportant in my eyes. Also XBOX gets more attention which makes me not really care for my PS3 (ex. GTA IV exclusive). But in the end I love my PS3 and it does not matter which system I have because soon enough my gaming days will be over. Side note: Why does the Wii sell so much, for some reason that system just has no interesting games, but for the younger generation, I guess it is a great interactive tool for lazy kids.

ive had a 360 forever and thats all i enjoy all my friends have it the price isnt bad. The online is amazing. 50 dollars a year and you already have a headset your good to go. Now for ps3 theres a rumor in april its going down 300 that can be a big plus for sony. As for the online I like it but nothing like xbox live and as for ps3 home it has potential but i think its going to fall short. Wii is like playing ps2 online too me. I havent tryed wii speak with animal crossing but idk.

@rockstar 88 You're right, the funny thing is, Nintendo doesn't care about you. When everyone wanted to see what first party titles were in the brewer (be it Metroid, Mario, Zelda, etc.) during the last major gaming expo, what'd they get? Some Wii music nonsense? The fact is, the Gamecube only stayed semi-afloat on 'MarioKart' and 'Super Smash'. With the new casual gaming demographic crowding the market, Nintendo's not looking back. Hmmmm, makes me wonder if MS could buy the Zelda brand for a steal???

I bought both a Wii and a X360 at launch, I haven't turned my Wii on in probably a year. The PS3 is a good system, but too expensive and does more than I need. I just want a game machine and the X360 does that just as good if not better than the PS3.

@ Tommy8930 I can attest to that. I haven't played my Wii since the Super Smash Bros. Brawl craze all those months ago. I'd play my Wii more if they actually had a better realized online system, but when you can't even CHECK OUT what you're friends are doing or playing right now, chat with them (or forced to via XBOX Live), or just plain have a steady internet connection, it's hard to love the Wii simply for the new control scheme. Super Smash Bros. Brawl may have hammered that last nail on the coffin for me before I realized that the system may really be more gimmicky than I realized (and wanted to deny).

@Vividnightmare You make a good point, but I presume if everyone follows Nintendo's lead in creating games aimed at casual gamers, it wouldn't be long before "Hardcore gamers" became the new untapped profit source. I think Nintendo's done well in realizing a better way to compete, but I think Microsoft's careful not to alienate their core gamers in trying to spread their profit base. If I have to put up with a goofy-lookin' avatar of myself so Microsoft can keep up with the game, so be it.

It's hard for me to argue about which system is better since both systems have EXCEEDED my expectations in every way possible in 2008. Regardless of which system is better Sony and Microsoft still need to compete with each other because as consumers we have benefited from it. The last hing we need is either Sony to go or Microsoft to go because if one goes, the other has a monopoly, and we're bound to get sub-par games. Look at the Wii. Great system, but it has a monopoly over the industry, and now it's flooding stores with horrible video games that aren't even worth being excuses for entertainment. Go Sony and Microsoft! It's weird rooting for both, but this competition is healthy.

I understand you as well Shiftfallout. I've owned a PSOne since 97, purchased a PS2, and I have two PSPs. I can admit that the Playstation 3 has more stable hardware. But I just don't think the Playstation 3 feels like a Sony console period. It suffers from a identity crisis especially with its online service. But I think if Final Fantasy XIII, Gran Turismo 5, and Tekken 6 were already out for the PS3 along side with Metal Gear Solid 4 you would see more PS3s being sold. I find fault with the long development of classic IPs that have created the PS franchise. Pretty much games people reminesce about. Now you have old Playstation fans with Xbox 360 who can get the chance to play Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Tekken, and other old franchises on the Xbox 360. And still, games like Ace Combat 6 and even Star Ocean 4 are currently exclusives to the the Xbox 360 which is really unusual. Even though 2009 has just come, 2010 is right around the corner especially when you're expecting a game like Final Fantasy XIII to release. I hope that by the time those games do come, Sony does deliver. But if not, you'll look back at the past 4 years scratching your head only to realize that new consoles are just around the horizon. And you can only hope that Microsoft's next console doesn't evolve into what you thought Sony was about(in terms of gameplay). :(

Why does everyone bring up the RROD on the 360 in their rants? I have had two systems; a pro 360, then I traded it for an Elite. Haven't had one issue with the system. I own all three consoles, so I don't rant. I play anything I want.

I want to get a PS3, but rumor has it that Sony is finally going to drop kick the PS3 out the door and give up on it. They bled plenty of cash recently if you heard about their listed loses for the year so it wouldn't suprise. On the Wii side I am very upset, the Wii is easily the worst system on the market and all it's success is doing is making sure the next generation of consoles that get released suck hard. The PC may be dying but if the console industry follows suit to Nintendo is will go from life support to super hero in the next few years...

im seeing a lot of what im gonna assume are PS3 owners comparing xbox and ps3 exclusives saying PS3 has better exclusives END OF STORY and so on and so forth and while i would say that all these exclusives are great games (cuz if you think any of them arent you need to seriously evaluate your objectiveness). also to all the people blinded by their love for the PS3 or perhaps more sinisterly their hate for xbox 360 or microsoft i am posing the question if PS3 exclusives are so much better and the experience is superior on PS3 etc. why has it been outsold by games that would fall under the category of games for "serious gamers" such as gears (clearly not for the faint of heart) and Fable 2(a pretty lengthy in-depth rpg)?

Ask any gamer to show you there game collections, and you will see that their ps3 to 360 ratio is pretty low. 360 just has better software at present. I am a gamer, not a fanboy. To me, if a game is good, I will play it. The proof is in the pudding, as they say.

@joevit Wow buddy you make no sense. Do you think DMC, FF, GTAIV, Tekken, and many more went multi plat cause the green box was pretty or cause MS threw cash their way. Do you realize that MS payed Rockstar more money for the exclusive GTAIV content than ALL Rockstar games put together have ever made for MS. Think about that. That includes all Rockstar games released on Xbox and on the 360. Thats Red Dead Revolver, Table Tennis, all the GTA's that released on Xbox.
