No Fallout 4 Demo and Here's Why

The full game arrives in just two weeks.

Bethesda will not offer a demo version of its upcoming RPG Fallout 4, the developer has confirmed. Writing on Twitter, marketing executive Pete Hines explained why that won't happen. "No demo," he said to a fan who asked about it. "Not possible to cut up the game into a small piece."

No Caption Provided

Gamers on the fence about buying Fallout 4, then, may want to wait to read reviews or see more gameplay. Demos for sprawling, AAA games aren't uncharted territory, however, as a free demo version of Bungie's shooter Destiny is currently available to try on consoles.

Fallout 4 launches on November 10 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

The post-apocalyptic game recently went gold, while its trophies/achievements have emerged. On top of that, Microsoft has said it is confident that Rise of the Tomb Raider and Fallout 4--which launch on the same day--can both enjoy success.

"Not possible."

Really...maybe someone should tell that to Gothic, or Dragon Age: Inquisition...or any number of open-world games that had demos or trial

You don't even have to "cut" it up, just let people download the full game and put a time limit to it so they can only see so much. This is what some open world games do for a demo, I remember "Skate" doing this.

There are numerous ways you can make a demo, to say it's "impossible" is clearly just not thinking about it at all. They simply don't want to make a demo because they don't need to, it's extra work that they don't have to do because it's bloody fallout 4 and will sell like hotcakes.

@Stiler: That was a reply on Twitter where you ar limited to how long a message can be. Probably meant something like "not possible due to budget" or "time constraints" or what have you.

@Stiler: Well with FO4 being so open ended the only way to give us a demo would be to cut off a massive area of the map, either let you play a mission, or like some demos have done give you a mission that isn't the same as in the full game, either way it's going to make the game feel less epic and way less fun than it really is, what's the point of a vast wasteland if you can't explore it? I don't know why anyone would even want a watered down demo.

@mkeezay22: Like I said in my comment, you can have an open world demo, just place a timer on it, so people can explore and get a feel for the "vastness" but only have a limited time to do so, this is what other open world games have done for "demos."

@Stiler: That is not what open world games have done for "demos". If you are really that naive to trust people won't be able to break this "timer" and the "locks" if you give them the whole game with those puny restraints, then you shouldn't be here explaining why it shouldn't be impossible technically. Since you have no idea why it isn't possible. exactly

Adding to that, DA:Inquisition actually has 5(how many was it?) major areas/regions, which made it easier to cut since you would just need to not include the other areas and block off the rest of the 1st one in the demo. While as Fallout you have this whole big place, if you want them to just put invisible walls around the map where you can and can't go. Then please no demo at all.

@phuonglong003: Examples of open world games with demos that I know of/played:

Gothic

Operation Flashpoint

Skate

Infamous

Dead Rising

Dragon's Dogma

Dragon Age: Inquisition

Some of them had timers, some used boundries/limited worlds.

To say that you need the "full" open world for a demo is absurd. I don't think anyone that would play a demo of Fallout 4 would expect to be able to play the full game or rush through the entire world.

My point was that there are a myriad of ways to do demos for open world games, some of which do not involve culling off part of the world or blocking it.

You act as though I'm an idiot for giving my opinion and know nothing of what I said.

@Stiler: If you think the "full" open world for a demo is absurd, which is absolutely true, then why do you expect them to not cutting parts off or blocking it? You are contradicting yourself.

As I said, Dragon Age: Inquisition has a bunch of areas/maps, which can be easily cut off to one or two maps and act as a demo, which can be applied to some of the other games you listed as well (I'm not going to comment on the ones I haven't play, or the demos of it), where as Fallout 4 does not have different maps, it's just one big map altogether. So to say to make a demo out of it without cutting off parts or blocking it IS absurd.

@phuonglong003: My entire point is that it's not "impossible" to make a demo for open-world games, as the myriad of games I mentioned had demos and were open worlds.

There are multiple ways of doing this, from invisible walls/limits, to timers (which can be hard coded from the moment you open the exe, so you can't simply set your computer clock back and keep playing...). On top of this you could simply not have the story-quest in it, just a few quest and then the area around the starting area that has some to give people a "feel" for the game without allowing people to progress past a certain point in quest-lines so nothing is spoiled or no secrets are found.

There ARE ways to make demos for open world games is my entire point, I'm not arguing whether it's needed or if it'd be smart (personally I think it'd be a waste of dev time to make a demo version, since the game will sell well regardless).

@Stiler: And you are in no position to judge whether it is possible or not to make demos for open world games when you don't know what circumstances they are talking from. And as I already said previously, which you don't seem to read at all, and since you like to take DA:I for the prime example, THE WORLDS ARE DIVIDED INTO A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT AREAS. And the DA:I demo put you into a small map (separated from the other worlds, but already finished with the game) with one objective anyway.

If you think something as simple as hardcoding timers will prevent anyone from cracking it, you're awfully naive. I'm sure if that was the case, they could have prevent piracy with 100% efficiency with those talents now couldn't they?

"just a few quest and then the area around the starting area that has some to give people a "feel" for the game without allowing people to progress past a certain point in quest-lines so nothing is spoiled or no secrets are found."

You see this is exactly the problem. You are suggesting them to make a mini-game of Fallout 4, which will involves invisible walls and cutting off all the other quests that might be related to that area, all the details and dialogues, etc, then went back and re-check over and over to make sure they did not miss one single detail that might be against their interests, to give you a damn demo. Do you really think they can do that in less than a month? Right after the game have just gone gold? Do you really think it's worth the effort, time, and resource? I'm sure as hell they don't think so. Again, under different circumstances, yes, there can be things that are impossible to make.

@phuonglong003: Holy crap you're not even reading what I write.

You seemed to have skipped the entire point where I said "Personally I don't think it'd be smart to make a demo, it will sell well regardless."

I'm not arguing that they SHOULD make a demo ffs, I am simply stating that it's ENTIRELY possible to make a demo of an open world game, as the countless examples I have given (Not just DA:I which you seem to keep pointing out) had demos, some of which were cut off, some of which had timers, etc.

I'm not sure why anyone would even ask this question. Fallout 4 is going to sell a crap-ton of copies and people likely already have their mind made up one way or another if they are buying this game. Because of this a demo is completely unneccessary and not worth the trouble. The whole point of the demo is to give people a chance to play the game, decide if they like it or not, and hopefully encourage them to buy it. To ask for a demo of Fallout 4 is really just asking for a chance to play a little bit of the game until you go out and buy it, which isn't what demos are for.

I'm sorry, why would you ever compare a non open world shooter like Destiny, that has loads of individual levels/areas, to a huge open world like Fall Out?

It's not impossible, but it sure as hell a lot easier to do a vertical slice on a game like Destiny than on a game like Fall Out.

@jadakiss88: Like Damazig mentioned destiny is not open world which is a huge difference. Destiny has you load into each area hence not open world. Fallout 4 no loading into each area its just one gigantic map. Only loading it would have is when going into caves/underground areas and even certain buildings if they go the same route as fallout 3.

Just buy it used or borrow it from a frielnd to see if you liked it; these companies won't bother with a demo these days like they used to.

Anything you can take away are if many ppl likes a game, or not, thats pretty much it. And ye, in know,, im good, you dont have to tell me.

I could easily forego a demo in the event the game offered a 100% money back guarantee of an agreeable type. With such a push on the consumption of games rather than the prudent development of them for QA purposes, we've seen far too many Day 1 games released in a poor state, so as long as the consumer is protected from that, I can do without Fallout.

Bethesda is in good standing with me. Fallout 3 and New Vegas were exceptional games. Skyrim, though a good game, had technical stability issues that ruined its fun for me. But I've still pre-ordered FO4 and the Season Pass because Bethesda is on good terms with me. We've 2 weeks left before we get "wasted". Though I can't say that word with a Boston accent.

@aegis_kleais: New Vegas actually had some pretty huge bugs at first too. I remember, I used to have to switch to a cowboy hat to enter the strip, or the game would crash.

Not to bash bethesda, though. I still can't wait for FO4! I just hope they have a stable launch.

@Daveof89: Yeh with games so complex it's really impossible to release without bugs, they have all had bugs even with tons of testing, it's inevitable in open world RPGs, that's why I hate when people complain about Witcher 3 or another RPG being glitchy, if it's in a massive open world with so many possibilities it just isn't possible to squash every bug.

In a few weeks anything major found will be fixed, after that they'll fix the small stuff, although with so much experience with the engine maybe it will launch with less bugs.

A demo is always good but it'd be kinda pointless here wouldn't it? Just play FO3 or watch some lets plays of 3 and thats it, FO4 should be more or less the same.

Now if someone thinks about buying the thing specifically for weapon customization or building houses or whatever, then yeah thats a problem.

If the demo only just literally a character creation, which is the same as what Saints Row 3 & 4 did, I would not mind at all. Or maybe they can just put the first part of the game (like what they shown at E3) as a demo and it's still acceptable.

I remember way back in the 90's, playing the demo I got with my issue of PC Gamer, of Bethesda's Daggerfall and being completely blown away . I went out immediately and bought the game. I probably would have eventually discovered the awesome open world games that come out of the Bethesda studios. But that demo sealed the deal and got me into them probably sooner than I would have been, had I not played it.

Also Destiny and Battlefront are Multiplayer co-op games. Fallout 4 is a single player game. See the difference?
