No Battlefield 4 on Wii U

DICE confirms latest military shooter will skip Nintendo's first HD platform, won't have female playable characters in single- or multiplayer.

Battlefield 4 will not release on Wii U, developer DICE has confirmed to Videogamer. Creative director Lars Gustavsson explained that bringing the game to Wii U would mean taking on a risk that he is not comfortable with.

No Caption Provided

"I think overall for me as creative director, number one is to deliver a really great game and experience. Sometimes, at least for us, it's focus on what you do well and what you know well, and ensure that you deliver something good than trying a bit too much, stretching yourself too thin and risking it," Gustavsson said. "I'd rather play it safe, deliver something really good and then look at the future and what could possibly be done than trying a bit too hard and then, flat."

During the Wii U unveiling at Nintendo's 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo briefing, then-Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello said the publisher was exploring ways to bring the Battlefield series to Wii U, though no projects ever came to light.

Battlefield 4 joins a growing list of games to skip the Wii U. Other big-name games that passed over the console include Saints Row IV, Far Cry 3, Resident Evil 6, Dead Space 3, and Crysis 3. Additionally, Fallout and Elder Scrolls publisher Bethesda has said it presently has no plans to support the Wii U.

Gustavsson also revealed that Battlefield 4 will not feature female playable characters in either single- or multiplayer.

"The geopolitics is more of a backdrop to what happens, it's more [about] you and your group, and we chose to pick a man for it," he said. "It seemed to suit the story."

He explained that there are "a million things" DICE would like to do with Battlefield 4, but at the end of the day, only so many things are possible.

"I have the deepest respect for the men and the women who choose to do military service. It's not that anyone is better or worse," Gustavsson said. "It's definitely a valid question that we asked ourselves."

Battlefield 4 launches this fall for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, though it is rumored to be in the works for the PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's unannounced next-generation platform.

@songoku0206 My opinion as well. They need more than Bayo2 to spring the console to life. Look at the release dates for the games to come, is there even anything worth it in the following months?

@songoku0206 @xolivierx Windwaker is still a ''remake''. Nothing new there. They are just playing the Nostalgia card on us, which they have been doing for years now.

I had hope in the WiiU, but more and more games keep NOT getting released on the console. With the economy and everything, people are probably saving for the new consoles instead of a system with almost no games on its list(look at the release schedule if you are skeptic). To get things worse, we see more trailers of great games to come, and those games won't be on the WiiU. Today we have new screenshots of GTA, and a trailer for the next Metal Gear Solid game. I'm trying to see where Nintendo went wrong. I think they pretty much shot themselves in the foot when new contendersemerged in the 2000s by almost only releasing Mario Games whereas the others were developing new franchises and releasing new ideas. I'm not saying Mario games are bad, but almost everybody when they think of Nintendo, they think about cartoonish games aimed at a general/kid public. Nintendo needed to change their image, and they failed. They didn't even try. I still like Nintendo though. You can say they are good at marketing, I disagree.

Just look at the playstation1 release : it had Warhawk, Twisted Metal, Crash Bandicoot if I'm not mistaken, Battle Arena Toshiden, Wipeout, and a lot of great games. What does the WiiU have? Mario2d? NintendoLand? We've seen this kind of crap on the Wii, only now they have Hd graphics 6 years too late.

The fact that the Wii U is still selling rather poorly is probably the primary reason why many big games are skipping the system. The new generation hasn't started fully yet but it's apparent that the Wii U is going to be like the gamecube in terms of first party games being the primary reason why people will buy the console. The bad relations Nintendo has with 3rd party developers during the 7th generation of consoles has hurt Nintendo for the coming of the 8th generation.

However I feel that the PlayStation 4 and whatever the next Xbox is called will also have a slow start because most 3rd party publishers are going to continue to make games for the much larger install bases of the PS3 and Xbox 360. With the PS4 and likely the next Xbox in addition abandoning backwards compatiablity, I wouldn't be surprised to see the the new systems selling like the Wii U now in early 2014 after the 2013 holiday rush.

@JaxxRaxor Exactly, Sony and Microsoft aren't winning fans with bad policies that push consumers to far. While it's true that the Wii U hasn't sold many systems yet, it's only because things are getting started.

@Jinzo_111887 @JaxxRaxor since the invent of the n64, nintendo has consistently had problems with their third party. the only two systems (not including handhelds) where they ever had great third party support were the nes and super nes.

@KimCheeWarriorX @danusty Sony's a bit more loose with their standards with regards to objectionable content. Which is why Silent Hill and Devil May Cry were on Sony's consoles and not Nintendo's. Not saying it's a bad thing or anything like that, just saying they try to avoid offending people like EA does with their abusive practices. However, Nintendo has made exceptions in the past.

@KimCheeWarriorX @Jinzo_111887 @JaxxRaxor the gamecube had pretty good 3rd party support, better than the n64 and so did the wii. out of my 24 wii games, 19 are 3rd party and those 19 are freaking awesome games, none of those party bullcrap games.

@KimCheeWarriorX @Jinzo_111887 @JaxxRaxor EXACTAMUNDO! in the nes and snes era, they had plenty of cool titles. They should have kept their winning formula, but instead they kept releasing their franchise only and a few other titles, most of them being for kids. That is where they started losing customers. In my humble opinion, Nintendo was never aboe to compete with Playstation, Saturn, Xbox, PS2, Xbob 360 and PS3. They should have taken a hint ages ago, but nothing changed. Instead they put all their eggs in the same basket with a ''revolutionary hardware'', the Wii, with its motion control. Too bad the Wii was not HD and had almost no mature games. Bad marketing, releasing a ''flavour of the month''

Well I am glad they didn't throw playble female characters just as a bullet point. I see the whole female chararcter thing a bigger issue when it comes to lead roles. I can't imagine Battlefield having that or being an issue of it. There is point where you don't pander just to make people happy which then in turn can effect a vision of a game. Publishers only think about it when it comes to money.

@JudgeSim @MadCityTech Well, I do agree. Nintendo is overworking some of their IPs and ignoring others. I wonder if they are trying to kill Mario with exhaustion or what. They could look remastering the Mother trilogy, upgrading Eternal Darkness to HD, giving Krystal her own spin off from the Star Fox games that has her leave the team in search for answers about her past, which could also return the Star Fox series to its former glory since people accuse her of ruining them. I mean, Nintendo has more than Mario and Pokemon in there arsenal, they should consider mixing it up for a change.

@JayQproductions @JudgeSim @MadCityTech But it isn't the same.

Though I do agree that they rehash the Super Mario Bros. titles (wish they fucking didn't). When a real 3D mario is released... It's hardly the same. And that goes for the rest of Nintendo's franchises lol.

@JayQproductions @JudgeSim @MadCityTech because it's mainly morons that play COD, as of Mario requires a certain type of personality amongst adults. Now everybody is trying to imitate COD, and COD has changed gaming forever. To me COD is like the cellphone and the MP3 player ; both great inventions, but when I see people in the subway staring at their cell/ipod the whole time, I can't ignore the fact the world has gone mongoloid. I perceive COD gamers the same way, idiotic morons.

id usually a type a massive LOL... but right now im feeling sorry for Wii U consumers. ...

those poor people spent that much money on a console, which isnt getting some of the best games their are. ........ seriously.

Its going to get even more nasty when other devs follow suit, and rather not spend on nintendo versions.

It just seems that Wii will not be able to compete come this fall. But why ..... did people jump to buying a WII ?? when PS3 or 360 were cheaper full of huge titles, and more huge titles on the way ? why didnt people just save money for ps4 or next xbox.

Nintendo should of gone all out.

If i was a Wii u owner now... id be planning to sell. [however nasty that may seem]

@Jinzo_111887 @DARKKNIGHTPRABZ get used to it, Xbox proved they could charge for multiplayer and still come out on top. Sony will probably follow with charged services on the PS4, maybe not online play but I expect them to go a little further than Playstation+

@JayQproductions @Jinzo_111887 @DARKKNIGHTPRABZ Given that it's supposed to be more PC like than the PS3, I get the feeling Sony wouldn't be wanting to push their luck. I imagine having a PC architecture could make it easier to hack if they tempted people to do it.

@DARKKNIGHTPRABZ Nintendo got lucky with being different last generation, but without the same innovation this time they should've just waited and released a machine on par with the new xbox/ps. I can't see a way out for them with the Wii U which as you say is pretty sad not just for people who bought one but gaming in general.

I wonder what excuse Nintendo fanboys will think up this time for why yet another major western AAA title is ditching the WiiU. Maybe EA and its devs haven't gotten a dev kit yet? Or maybe the WiiU is getting it's own exclusive version? or maybe the WiiU is just too powerful for Dice to handle? Whatever makes them sleep better at night.

It would be a waste of time. Nintendo likes all the kiddie stuff. There will never be an Elder Scrolls nor a Fallout for a Nintendo console. No Dark Souls, no GTA, Bioshock...etc. The list goes on. There is nothing next gen about the Wii U. Anybody that dares defend it really needs to raise their expectations.

@huerito323 @Jinzo_111887 I could name more on their other consoles. Duke Nukem 64, Hexen 64, Jet Force Gemini, Perfect Dark, and two 007 games. Thing is, Nintendo isn't kiddy. People just think they are because most of their games seem like it (or at least the more popular ones do). NoA is also known to censor games, which might be why some titles don't' show up here in America. On another note, while Earthbound might seem like a kiddy game until you make it to the end, Giygas is the polar opposite of kiddy. Heck, even the inspiration behind Giygas was something not meant for kids. Itoi walked into the wrong threater as a child was severely traumatized.

@ewjiml @huerito323 no, because it seems they already have low expectations. It seems they are happy with what they have right now. The Wii U was supposed to be the Nintendo console that can compete with Sony and Microsoft in terms of hardcore games, but nope. So far, it is an epic failure.
