Nintendo Switch Outsells PS4 / Xbox One In July 2018 US Sales; Top-Selling Games Revealed

Nintendo had a very strong month.

The NPD Group today released its report for July 2018, revealing the consoles and games that sold the best during the month and providing a look at how the games industry is doing overall. Starting with hardware, the Nintendo Switch sold the most units and drove the most dollar sales overall.

According to the NPD Group, the Switch has now been the top-seller in terms of dollar sales seven times since the console launched in March 2017. This is the first time the Switch is back on top since December 2017. While the Switch had a strong July, the PS4 remains the top-selling console of 2018. The Xbox One, meanwhile, saw its dollar sales rise by almost 50 percent in July. On a year-to-date basis, Xbox One sales are up more than 60 percent.

Now Playing: Nintendo Switch Outsells PS4 And Xbox One In July, New Direct Coming Next Week - GS News Update

Overall, hardware revenue in July jumped 19 percent to $217 million. The uptick in sales was driven by Xbox One, Switch, and the NES Classic Edition, but not PS4.

Moving to games, Nintendo's Octopath Traveler was the top-seller during July for all platforms, an accomplishment that is especially notable because digital sales are not included. Impressively, the nearly five year old Grand Theft Auto V finished No. 2 in July, with Mario Kart 8, Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, and The Legen dof Zelda: Breath of the Wild rounding out the top five. Nintendo had a strong month, as 5 of the top 10 best-sellers were Nintendo games. You can see the full all-platforms and console-specific best-seller lists at the bottom of this post.

In July, total spending on games dropped 12 percent to $246 million. Of note, the Switch is the only console platform growing year-over-year in terms of dollar sales, rising 70 percent. The gains are even more substantial than NPD is reporting, as the group doesn't cover digital Nintendo game sales.

With hardware and software combined, July 2018 total video game spending in the US reached $749 million, which is up 14 percent year-over-year.

That’s cool. I still have no desire to get one though.

I think I’m just sticking to one console next gen. I’m tired of buying multiple brands while I just end up using an Xbox for everything gaming and multimedia related.

I dont regret buying my switch but there are a lot or remasters, and for £50 for not a lot it kinda feels like a bit of a rip.

great to play on the go however.

Some really innovative indies that work even better with this in mind, like dead cells or golf story for the longer journeys.

Nice to see Nintendo still going strong though.

Regarding to games sales, this chart has no value. Most games are sold in digital form.

@dani3po: Out of curiosity, could you cite your source? While digital sales have increased I don't believe they have overtaken physical. Aside from a chunk of consumers who are still uncomfortable with not having a physical product to represent ownership there are still technical limitations in areas which prevent digital from being a viable alternative (speeds, broadband cap).

@dani3po: No, digital sales are currently around 20-40% of the total for games with a physical release, depending on the game/publisher, so not most. Secondly, games on the chart include digital except where indicated with a * or in text. Basically everything on the chart includes digital except for Nintendo games.

@dani3po: except Nintendo, their own financial reports show that physical still is the majority of their sales.

I really enjoyed Octopath, but I'm a little surprised it took the top spot.

@Sepewrath:

Yeah that may be true, but nothing that makes me want to rush out and buy one just yet.

We also have a PS4 & 3, so a lot of 3rd party is also available.

I really like the concept of the Switch and will jump onboard at some point.

A 5G version down the line could really be interesting. Maybe that's Switch 2, but the potential would be great

@barcaazul: I suggest you buying it after 2 years. now all you can find are few nice AAA games, most are just re-releases, AND a bunch of indies. I regret buying it and I will buy a new 3ds soon. since it has way more nice games to offer.

@Terminator95: In lifetime sales yes. But that's not saying much, given it's estimated that the Switch will catch up within 2019 despite the Switch beeing from 2017 and the PS4 beeing from 2013. So the PS4 is over 4 years older and still losing ground FAST

Lol Gta5 still on top? Kinda shows the dripfeed of games we’ve been having this current gen. It’s either sequels to games that already existed on last gens or indies. Very few new refreshing AA titles

@beuneus12: A game which itself is a last-gen port, no less. Here's hoping RDR2 lives up to the hype.
