Nintendo slashes 3DS prices

Handheld price drops to $169 in North America, by "around a third" in Europe; Nintendo to give 20 free GBA and NES Virtual Console games to early adopters.

In response to a financial statement that slashed the firm's full-year profit forecast and announced disappointing launch sales for the 3DS, Nintendo today announced it was cutting the price of its new handheld globally by up to 40 percent. These price cuts will come into effect on August 12, Nintendo said.

The 3DS price is being cut globally.
The 3DS price is being cut globally.

In Japan the price of the handheld is dropping 40 percent to ¥15,000; in the US it is dropping 32 percent to $169.00; and in Australia gamers will see the price drop 29 percent to AU$249.99. Gamers in Europe will hope to see similar reductions; Nintendo UK confirmed to GameSpot that the trade price of the console will be dropping by "around a third" but did not offer concrete information since exact pricing is set by retailers.

By way of compensation to those who have bought the handheld at the higher price, Nintendo also announced that it will be giving 20 free downloadable games for existing 3DS owners. While half of the games released as part of the so-called "Nintendo 3DS Ambassador" programme will be available on the Nintendo eShop at a later date, the company said, the other half will be exclusive to the early adopters.

Ten NES virtual console titles--including Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Jr., Balloon Fight, Ice Climber, and The Legend of Zelda--will be released first to members of the programme and will appear on the Nintendo eShop at a later date. Programme members will also get 10 GBA virtual console games--including Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Metroid Fusion, WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$, and Mario vs. Donkey Kong--that Nintendo says it has no plans to release to the general public. Any 3DS owners who connect to the Nintendo eShop before midnight US Eastern time on August 11 will be automatically entered into the programme.

More details on the programme will be announced "in the future," Nintendo said.

@mhder: I don't think it's the hardware that's the issue, but rather the reality that a lot of people still have a regular DS and are satisfied. When the games start to come in for the 3DS that are not on the regular models, then I think you'll see people changing platforms... it's the games.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the 3DS. Just bought mine today and after having it at home and playing around with it - I could finally appreciate how much fun it was and I didn't even buy a game. This is truly one of those things that you have to play around with to understand. Not even those traveling road shows do it justice - you need a few hours to really get to "know it."

this just makes me sad. I love my 3ds. I hope they can get their butts in gear and turn it around. For me, Nintendo is where it all started. I would hate to see them fall from the race. @Distinctive_Fin - Sony did something similar with their apology program for the breach. But I agree its a nice gesture. A VERY nice gesture :D

@mario-nin-freak: Did you know that even casually threatening moderation will get you modded and suspended? True story, check the TOS. Beyond that, take a joke man, your name makes it obvious what you're about and I have no issue with that. I was purely making a joke that someone with starfox as their avatar, and "Mario Nintendo Freak", would need to say, "I love Nintendo". It would be like someone named "Chocoholic" saying they like Hershy's bars. @Distinctive_Fin: Not overpricing the 3DS to begin with, and then caving when sales caused stock prices to fall by half their value? @WolfGrey: 3DS aside, the Wii has given them every reason to believe otherwise. I'm sure it came as something of a shock to Nintendo that the portable market is less casual. Being Nintendo, I think it's safe to say they've learned from their error and are going to try and support this hardware with games as sooon as possible. Nintendo has put too much effort and marketing to abandon 3D, so the only other option now is to throw money at it and make some original games. I hope, at least, for the sake of their fans...

Wow. If this doesn't prove that Nintendo is truly on the side of their fans then what does? First they price the 3DS for $250, which is a good price point, but when they drop the price to $180 in the US they give the proud owners of the 3DS 20 games to download for free! Let's see Sony or Microsoft do something like that, oh wait, if they do they will be copying Nintendo, again.

Well this just displays how bad the 3DS is doing. Not surprised at all.So many cancellations and delays. No big titles save 1 atm.I think Nintendo is finally learning that a system cant live off of 1 or 2 good games a year eh?

Is Nintendo 3DS marking that this 3D graphics are perfect now? I think they worked hard just to perfect the 3D experience without glasses... I wonder is 3D getting old?

People were talking the same crap years ago when Sony was about to launch the PSP and Nintendo already had the DS out. Its 2005 all over again. "Sony's PSP will kick the DS right out of the water." blah blah blah. As if that ever happened.

@GeigerdolylWodd Nintendo has been ripping people off for years, but this takes the cake AND kicks you in the balls. We all have the right to buy a piece of junk if that's what we want to do with our money, but anyone who paid $250 should demand a $80 refund.

I only paid £160 for mine 2mths ago (Sainsburys 'marking up error') I LMAO all the way to the till (was going to pay £199.99 :D). Also only paid £24.99 for DOA: Dimensions (Morrisons), £19.99 for SSIV 3D Edition (Game Sale), Pilot wings £19.99 (Morrisons). The 3DS is a excellent system. More a DS2 - 3D than a DS in 3D - 2D graphics on par with Wii/Cube. Moral to this story - shop about for a system and its games prior to purchasing and you can almost 99% of time get for a price that would take months for manufacturer discounting to match. Btw Asda now selling @£169.99GBP and Sainsburys @£179.99GBP. Happy Shopping :D

@muzza93: Why is that? Is the idea that it costs so much to import to AU, and distribute over a large area? That doesn't strike me as 100 bucks worth of shipping and handling. Is the AU economy generally inflated? @GeigerdolylWodd: Oh man, I know that Nintnedo's business model is to sell hardware at a profit, but that is a HUUUUGE profit margin for portable electronics. Outside of things like snacks and cola at a movie theatre, that's a pretty deep gouge.

Makes me even happier that I purchased a 3DS for Ocarina of Time 3D - I've been savoring my experience with that game, and seeing as there are some exclusives on that list I don't already have in cartridge format (hello, Metroid and Mario vs. DK)...

nintendo have alway had a "(a) keep the price down and we will make money in unit volume software sales" over "(b) lets up the price and tech to make it a MUST HAVE gadget" and thats why DS worked, by upping the price i think they were trying to get up into the Gadget market, so they now try plan B thinking they could fool the world with 3d being the best thing since sliced bread. FAIL, and like the DS its still just a portable gamecube at best only costs a bunch more, plus vita is only a tad more expensive for a monster load more tech and software and features now. they are gonna slowly crawl back to plan A before its too late. only wait, the software is sh1t ... oops.... time to fire some marketing reps?

This is an indication of just how overpriced the 3DS was, and I would not be surprised if they are still making a profit on every system sold considering how outdated it is. This also shows how scared they are by the impending launch of the PS Vita.

Well... I guess. But I'm still unimpressed. It's not a system I would line up to buy, because there are hardly any games that pique my attention there, and honestly giving people games that they played 10/30 years ago is not enough to cope with the lack of "innovation" this system promised. I'm truly sorry, Nintendo.

After buying a 3DS when OoT 3D came out I feel bad it's not selling better. It's truly a remarkable little system. With that said, the price cut is neccessary. I was one of those people that almost didn't buy one because I find it is a high price for a portable. I think the price cut is needed because it will definitely boost sales and also keep the 3DS very competetive against the incomming PS Vita. Lastly let me say I am really glad Nintendo is compensating early adopters with free content and exclusive content. It seems only fair, especially since when I saw the headline I was like "CRAP!!!" knowing I've only had one little more than a month, but then I read the second part and I was like "oh...okay."

This price drop was necessary for two reasons, one, sales for the 3ds weren't meeting expectations and the lack of sales aren't bringing much revenue for the developers considering the limited number of units sold and limited number of buyers for their games, so why reducing the price, gamers will feel more comfortable upgrading to a 3ds and this gives confidences to developers because they will feel more units will sell therefore more money is to be made. Second, the lack of software, throughout gaming history, if you don't have the software to back your hardware then it won't sell, this is an example yes there are going to be incredible games like MGS3D, Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land and several others but, but these are mostly ports of games that will benefit from using the technology to make these experiences feel new but to set the 3ds apart from everything else you need originality, Nintendogs made the DS an innovation in handhelds but the 3DS doesn't have that yet, the 3d yes adds depth but if it wasn't there its the same system with a circle pad, gyroscope and improved graphics. 2012, the 3DS needs to set itself apart from everything else, don't rely on the hardware because if you don't have software then it won't sell. 20 free games in a few months, its great but you can't keep using software from the past to make the present relevant because thats not what the 3ds is supposed to be, its supposed to be a platform of one not everything else because thats what it looks like.

@deathblow3 : Amazon DID stop selling the 3DS, but apparently they started again. The reason was that they had too many complaints about it. It was on many news stations and the internet, so no, I wasn't making it up.

For all the people unsure on whether they should buy a 3DS or not... i am 29 years old and have always loved gaming, i own an Xbox, a Wii, and making a move to the realms of PC gaming soon (just because the hardware is now "nex-gen" and offers stunning looking games... anyway... 2 days ago i got myself a 3DS for 200 pounds with 2 games, Street Fighter 3D, Pilotwings, and just got Ridge Racer today!... I am hooked! sooo much fun to be had with the little power house, you can take 3D pictures, and have random 3rd party games to play pre-loaded on the 3DS, yeah for some it is costly to buy one but honestly Nintendo have really done well with this nex-gen hand held! buy it NOW... you never know who you will bump into on Street Pass!!!

@pacific90 Considering the 20 games sold for something like $400 when they were new, and would sell for at least $100 on the vitual console, I think it's fair. My question is does the 3DS come out of the box with enough memory to hold them all?

The 3DS is a hard sell right now. Not enough games and too high a price. $170 definitely will encourage people on the edge to go ahead and make a purchase. The DSi and DSi XL being on the market right now is also probably hurting sales of the 3DS. Their prices keep dropping and consumers seem to be happy with what that device still offers. Plus developers love the DSi because of the lower cost of development and the huge install base of possible buyers. With the PS Vita coming out soon, Nintendo is going to have to pick up the slack. Lowering the price by $80 is a great start. Now they just need to get some games to market that give people a reason why they need the new system.

@foxfacer2d2: I hear you, I guess this is something I just don't "get". On a seperate note, I wonder if people who were ready to buy, will actually delay now expecting another price drop? I'm guessing not, or at least, not enough to outweigh people who jump in now that the price has plummeted.

on a different note the way Sony is pushing 3d on the ps3 i am surprised that the vita doesn't have it. heck it was even important enough for them to show some tv's at e3 the last two years and announce a 3d tv bundle.
