Nintendo slashes 3DS prices

Handheld price drops to $169 in North America, by "around a third" in Europe; Nintendo to give 20 free GBA and NES Virtual Console games to early adopters.

In response to a financial statement that slashed the firm's full-year profit forecast and announced disappointing launch sales for the 3DS, Nintendo today announced it was cutting the price of its new handheld globally by up to 40 percent. These price cuts will come into effect on August 12, Nintendo said.

The 3DS price is being cut globally.
The 3DS price is being cut globally.

In Japan the price of the handheld is dropping 40 percent to ¥15,000; in the US it is dropping 32 percent to $169.00; and in Australia gamers will see the price drop 29 percent to AU$249.99. Gamers in Europe will hope to see similar reductions; Nintendo UK confirmed to GameSpot that the trade price of the console will be dropping by "around a third" but did not offer concrete information since exact pricing is set by retailers.

By way of compensation to those who have bought the handheld at the higher price, Nintendo also announced that it will be giving 20 free downloadable games for existing 3DS owners. While half of the games released as part of the so-called "Nintendo 3DS Ambassador" programme will be available on the Nintendo eShop at a later date, the company said, the other half will be exclusive to the early adopters.

Ten NES virtual console titles--including Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Jr., Balloon Fight, Ice Climber, and The Legend of Zelda--will be released first to members of the programme and will appear on the Nintendo eShop at a later date. Programme members will also get 10 GBA virtual console games--including Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Metroid Fusion, WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$, and Mario vs. Donkey Kong--that Nintendo says it has no plans to release to the general public. Any 3DS owners who connect to the Nintendo eShop before midnight US Eastern time on August 11 will be automatically entered into the programme.

More details on the programme will be announced "in the future," Nintendo said.

WTF? 3DS pricedrop from $250 to $170 in like 4 1/2 months? Wow. You know I didn't have buyer's remorse before but I think I'm getting it now. At least they have a pretty good offer of free games for early adopters but man I sure would have liked to have that extra coin in my pocket instead. :(

That is a massive price drop, and came very fast from launch. Nintendo has never done anything like it before. That tells us two things. 1- 3DS was a big flop (so far). 2- Nintendo never sells hardware at a loss, so they were making big profits originally from it. I think its problem wasn't its price, it was the software lineup that was lacking. It will sell a lot now, but gamers still won't have anything to play on it.

There is no next handheld war.Nintendo has now already won it.It is now almost hundred bucks cheaper than the Vita.Consumers love much cheaper items. And before the vita launches the 3ds will have already systemsellers such as mario and mario kart out.Vita will be sonys last proper handheld system I am afraid.

What I like the most about this is that the 20 free games are not just shovelware. These are not only cIassics but some of the best titles for their respective titles. I was starting to fume when I saw the news, but when I saw the games, I'm almost happy that I bought it when I did. This is a superb deal, no matter how you shake it.

DennisWZH this proves that the 3DS was ridiculously overpriced if they can afford to cut the price that much.. ****************************************************************** Uuumm.. everyone knew it was overpriced way before it was released. << LINK REMOVED >> I knew it was overpriced before I shelled out my $250 for it. I actually bought 2 of them. lol!! Now I have to find a family member to give it to as a gift. lol!! I won't even try to resell it at this point. I'll register it under my wife's name and download all the 20 free games before I give it away. The 3DS is going to sell like crazy now.

I seem to pick the wrong time to buy my systems but... I think this is a good move and I can't complain with current owners getting the free 20 game package as well.

Oh my. I've gotta get on the EShop today. lol!! 20 FREE Games sounds good to me. Hhhm.. I wonder if the NPG will outsell the 3DS this holiday now? Even if these 20 games only cost $5 a piece, that's $100 savings right there. I think many of these games would cost more then $5 on EShop. I'm glad I got my 32GB card. lol!! This is actually great news for people who were on the fence about getting a 3DS. There are a slew of great games coming out this holiday as well.

now this is a smart move by Nintendo. now people who wanted to buy a 3DS but thought it was too expensive can do so. it will increase sales and compete big time with the vita when it arrives. I am one of the people who already own a 3DS, i am a little disappointed by nintendo for dropping the price so late, but i think 20 FREE games will make up for it alot.

I gotta agree, this...wasn't a terrible move on part of Nintendo. We knew that they would eventually drop the price. In true Nintendo fasion, the price drop would probably come with a free game (at least three different free games came out with the Gamecube). So ifyou bought it early, you'd feel a little bad when they would either reduce the price, release it with a free game, re-release a DX version, or all of the above, all within two years. At the very least, you'd have some games under your belt before they release their special deals. So it would really hurt to buy this for $250, only to drop the price by $80, within the year it's released! Add the fact that there were no real games out, and you'd be better off sticking with your other system for the time being. Wha tthey did here was very smart. I'd prefer my $80 back, but this makes buying the game at launch much less painful. My DS broke, so I just bought this instead (would cost $100 to repair or replace it, might as well splurge for the newer model). I don't regret my purchase, I regret purchasing it now. Now, however, I regret it a little less.

@ YearoftheSnake5 Yeah hopefully the second 3DS model came with 4G network support. Just hope they don't get AT&T as their only provider. In this time and age, 4G networks are the perfect way to get online so we can game online anytime and watch portable YouTube anytime.

I imagine this is partly to prepare for the Playstation Vita launch, whenever it may be. Slashing the price makes the 3DS a more competitive product. Of course, this will boost sales, which is what Nintendo needs right now considering how poor Wii is doing in the marketplace. Perhaps they're even looking to release redesigned hardware soon to correct a few complaints, as they did with the original DS.

@ snake63 Yeah the thing is that Nintendo got greedy and thought ppl would buy the handheld nonstop early at $250 just cuz they are offering ports and remakes in 3D. We want new games and we didn't get that many at launch. The 3DS launch was to me the worst handheld launch ever. I was still busy playing Dragon Quest IX and was about to start on Pokemon Black at the time and didn't had the extra cash to get myself a 3DS.

@zenverak: The original GBA had no backlight and it was almost impossible to play Castlevania. Nintendo had to come out the Game Boy Advance SP.

I know calling the 3DS a flop is harsh but an $80 reduction of price less than six months show that Nintendo has made big mistakes and with the Vita coming in a few months proves they are getting desperate to improve sales. A true test will be when Super Mario 3D, Super Mario Kart 3D and Kid Icarus comes out. Nintendo must not be depended on remakes and need third party developers to step up with new games.

That is great for people who bought it early and people who are buying it new. I'll be buying it later though because only a few of those great games are worth the second download. And GBA games on the 3DS, SWEET!

It looks like the 3DS should had never launch at $250 to begin with especially when it launch with a lot of not-so exciting games. August 12, 2011 should had been the launch period and games like DOA Dimension, Super Street Fighter 4: 3D Edition, LOZ: Ocarina of Time 3D, Pilotwings Resort, BlazBlue: CS2, Ridge Racer 3DS, and games that were released before August 12 were suppose to be launch games. Well at least it's gonna be cheaper than Vita now.

Here's something sneaky. Go to GameStop before 8.12 get a pre-owned 3DS, register it and get your free games. Then after 8.12 go back and get refunded the money of the price drop. GS policy states that if the item was bought within 30 days you can go back, return it and re-buy for the new price. Idk if it would work with a new one though. So in the end you get it for the reduced price and get 20 games.
