In the wake of Nintendo's two major announcements today, one of which involved the Japanese game giant signing a deal with DeNA to make mobile games, the company's shares are skyrocketing. At press time, stock value is up by more than 30 percent on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

Investors had long called for Nintendo to move into the smartphone and tablet gaming market, so it's not too surprising to learn that share value is rising fast as a result of the news.

Nintendo's stock value has reached a new high for 2015. But as you can see in the graph below, share value is still well below what it was during the 2007/2008 Nintendo Wii days.

Nintendo is not planning to simply port its games to smartphones and tablets, instead electing to create all-new experiences based on its catalog of popular IP for those devices. The first of these games will be released this fall. Further details about the Nintendo-DeNA deal, however, are being kept under wraps for now.

The other piece of news Nintendo announced today was that it had started work on what president Satoru Iwata called a "dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept." Unfortunately, no further details on the system--codenamed NX--are available. Iwata said additional details about this new platform will be announced in 2016.

My money says Nintendo's planning to make a smartphone of their own, which will be the only platform that their smartphone games will run on.

great for you Nintendo.
I don't personally game on smartphones or tablet, because it's garbage and games are crap.
but companies gotta follow social trends.

some may argue climate change is a myth, but human stupidity is not.

Either mobile will drag Nintendo down or Nintendo will raise mobile up. I tend to think Nintendo is capable of the latter.

I hate the stock market, it regulates things that it shouldn't, creates bubbles and distorts the "real value" of properties because it only exists to make money from money instead of quality products.

It's about time. This is the most sensible thing they've done. I think they should have started this maybe 4 years ago however.

Nintendo is coming back big, and I think the new software sales of their tablet games will eat the 3DS's lunch.
In fact, I think they will take focus away from the Wii U and put those resources into mobile.

I really don't think this is going to be the godsend people are making it out to be.

This is reminiscent of Sony being sure the portable gaming space and the Vita were their tickets to victory.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Sony could never make something akin to a Nintendogs, Brain Age or Animal Crossing, hence the Vita would never attain the kinds of mainstream success Nintendo does in the portable space. Nintendo are smarter than Sony when it comes to making successful portable games. I imagine we'll see things like another Brain Age series of games, and mini games akin to the mini games that were in SM64DS.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I kind of have to agree with this. I would have thought Nintendo would the the last company to sell out in order to fit in the mold. but at the same time, it's not like they provide diversity in terms of gaming experience compared to the 80s/90s golden days of the NES and SNES, and N64 as well

<< LINK REMOVED >> I completely agree with you. For some reason, this doesn't seem right. On the other hand, I could be completely wrong and be happy with new games from Nintendo. But, I like the way Nintendo does things. Great games, enabled by great hardware of their choosing. While I have cool stuff on my Smartphone, I still consider my PC and Nintendo Consoles the mainstay of my library.

Okay, the news is great, and I totally welcome new experiences based on their classic properties. But please, PLEASE port the classics, too. Emulators are nice but I would pay good money to have them from the official source!

I guess you can expect a " Mario Temple Run " and "Mario Jump" then. You can also expect to pay $5 for NES & Gameboy games. Hope you guys are happy paying for them again.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I'd pay for them again. Smooth, clean-running versions that I wouldn't have to deal with emulators to play. Especially if they released them in a "museum" type ecosystem were they came with "special features", pictures of the box art and what not.

Obviously we can't expect the full catalog of those titles to be released again. But why not pay for premium rereleases of the top titles?

Certainly, no one's telling you to buy rereleased classics. But it would be cool. And if it's meaningful to some people, why would it be a waste to them?

If Nintendo would've announced another hardware console, chances are their shares would plummet. They deserve more than they get, they should be more than a "kids company", but no one trusts them to do something "serious", something more than a childish gimmick, at least hardware-wise, although everyone can enjoy their games. Statistics beat fun.

The NX system is something very vague, it's probably not even a hardware console, it's most likely very early in development, and it wasn't even the main focus of the conference. For all we know, NX could be their line of smartphones, or tablets, it wouldn't be surprising. The big announcement was about their involvement in the mobile games market, something "investors had long called for Nintendo to move into", and that can be as soon as whenever.

Could be good for their bottom line, but they might also canibilise sales of the 3DS or 3DS games.

I have an old DS lite which I bought to play on my 1.5hr commute each way to work. Once I got my smartphone I played the DS less.
