Nintendo's NX Will Surprise and Innovate, Iwata Says

In a new interview with Japanese business publication Nikkei, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata spoke--albeit briefly and in vague terms--about the company's mysterious new platform, codenamed "NX."

Although he did not offer specifics, Iwata suggested that the NX aims to catch gamers by surprise and offer meaningful innovation.

No Caption Provided

"If you only expand upon existing hardware, it's dull," Iwata said in the report, as translated by Kotaku. "In some shape or form, we're always thinking about how we want to surprise players as well as our desire to change each person's video gaming life."

Iwata officially announced the NX during a presentation in Japan last week, where the company also revealed plans to finally enter the smartphone market. Revealing the NX project was a means to demonstrate that Nintendo remains committed to gaming hardware.

"As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename 'NX,'" Iwata said at the time.

More details about NX are set to be revealed in 2016. GameSpot's full report about the NX is available here.

Though concrete information about Nintendo's NX is extremely light at the moment, one retailer is already accepting preorders for the device.

In the video game and music industry I see the word innovation or innovative thrown around all the time. I rarely see it from big companies. But some how indie guys and small companies can make innovation happen.

When you try to go for mass appeal innovation go's right out the window. If you say
to hell with the status quo and stick to what you want to do, than innovation can exist, when you try to go for mass appeal that breads stagnation in the apathetic generation. Challenge people, challenge the system or be doomed to repeat the same mistakes.....

<< LINK REMOVED >> what Indie game is innovative and not a remix of old school gaming? Heck, Indie creators cant even make their own engines.

Indie creators is what almost collapsed the gaming industry in the 80's and Nintendo had to save it by locking out content creators.

Indies don't make their own engines for a reason: It is exceedingly expensive. They don't call them indies for nothing.

Minecraft change the way world were generated, they also created their own engine.

Mario 64 change the way games walked in 3D.

Nothing Mario is innovative... Releasing an average of over 6 games per year starring Mario for the past 35 years does not count as innovative.

How come the leaked specs for the Nintendo Fusion aren't referenced in these articles? Was that leak proven to be false?

It may be "dull" but it's functional and does not scare away third parties. Sometime innovation have it's downside. I'm pretty sure you prefer the gamecube controller for most games instead of their innovative wiimote. I know I do.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Sounds like the Wii and Wii U to me, consoles built with spare parts from the previous gen with a gimmicky controller tacked on. I was hoping for Nintendo to build something a little more modern next time, but now I'm not sure they won't keep doing what they've always done.

The Xbox One does bring something a bit different than its predecessor if you bundle it with the Kinect. Yes...the kinect has its faults...but it works really well when it works...lol

I'm going to interpret this as not being backward compatible with the Wii or Wii U in terms of both games AND controllers. And I sincerely hope that's the case. They need a new, versatile platform on which to expand their library of games without relying on backward compatibility. I think any attempt at maintaining backward compatibility in any aspect besides Virtual Console releases will seriously hold the system back.

I love nintendo games and I always loved nintendo but I can promise that the greed is done sucking me in. I am no longer buying consoles which are nothing but gimped computers with hard restrictions to make them a console. Until you wake up, stop trying to juice the market in buying hardware they dont need and start innovating on a pc platform, i am done with you, nintendo.

You are getting ripped off by mega corporations who are in the business of sucking you in, then using their profit towards marketing and towards splitting the market in shares using exclusives. I think you dont understand consoles so much.

I'm pretty sure this is the same thing they've said for every console since the 64.

And just because it surprises and innovates doesn't mean it actually adds to the gamers experience. I feel like they come up with a gimmick, then try to create games around it when they should be doing that the other way around.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The creativity and gimmicks have never been what has hurt Nintendo...it has been the third party's devs lack of interest to develop games on their platform(s). You have to get them to buy into the "gimmick." I mean, they buy into the Kinect (which we all know is hit or miss...but mostly miss) and the PS move, which to me, is still collecting dust in a drawer somewhere...

You're argument holds true for the 64, it lost support thanks to the cartridge formant and Nintendo's strict governing. Gamecube lost support thanks to its gimmicky(ish) controller & micro DVD. Wii & Wii U are self explanatory.

And they don't have to pour money into figuring out the controller. It's simply a different kind of input device. I use a fork and a spoon for different foods for a reason.

I'm a big fan of the big three...but it bothers me that the WiiU has gotten crapped on this generation simply because it chose a slightly different direction in its design. Yeah it is under-powered, but it looks like the devs aren't having much luck with the competition either...

Nintendo needs to figure out how to go from niche, to relevant. I for one don't mind them being Niche...but in the market today....they need more in order to survive.

They´ll be pulling out a better performance WiiU, where the gamepad it´s the actual Nintendo DS. You basically decide if to buy just the main console or also the portable "attachment" which by the way will allow you to use it as a cellphone.

This way Nintendo saves money by melting togheter all their hardware and game IPs, into one unified experience. I´VE SAID-
