In a new interview with Japanese business publication Nikkei, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata spoke--albeit briefly and in vague terms--about the company's mysterious new platform, codenamed "NX."

Although he did not offer specifics, Iwata suggested that the NX aims to catch gamers by surprise and offer meaningful innovation.

No Caption Provided

"If you only expand upon existing hardware, it's dull," Iwata said in the report, as translated by Kotaku. "In some shape or form, we're always thinking about how we want to surprise players as well as our desire to change each person's video gaming life."

Iwata officially announced the NX during a presentation in Japan last week, where the company also revealed plans to finally enter the smartphone market. Revealing the NX project was a means to demonstrate that Nintendo remains committed to gaming hardware.

"As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename 'NX,'" Iwata said at the time.

More details about NX are set to be revealed in 2016. GameSpot's full report about the NX is available here.

Though concrete information about Nintendo's NX is extremely light at the moment, one retailer is already accepting preorders for the device.

I'd really just like Nintendo to make their own Android smartphone. Carved out of that indestructable Nintendium plastic the original GameBoy and SNES/N64 controllers were made out of. Basically Nintendo's version of the Xperia Play with the durability of the GameBoy.

Make it happen.

The only reason Nintendo announced the NX so soon was to stop people from rioting after they announced that they are partnering with mobile.

We're not going to be inundated with the NX headlines for a year & a half, with no actual information...right GS?

There are no details to talk about...just the idea that new ideas are needed.

Lets innovate the machine, yes, lets.

Innovation isn't helpful if it's a feature people don't use,

3DS 3D=off

Wii U second screen=Ignored

Be innovative in your games, that what serves you best Nintendo. Stop trying to re-create the Wii's success with a gimmicky console, it's not going to happen again.

<< LINK REMOVED >> "3DS 3D=off" Yeah that's why Nintendo released the New 3DS with improved 3D because no one would use it.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Yeah the improved 3D takes what was a novelty you'd use once and makes it a viable option to play with but I'd still rather turn it off so the wimpy battery doesn't die so quickly.

I think Nintendo keeps making comments about far-off game systems so that people don't forget about them.

I'm hoping this is some kind of hybrid home/portable console, and not some "gaming cellphone" jackassery.

In my opinion, I believe the way Nintendo can retake the lead would be to " again just my opinion" re-enter the arcade market by releasing an arcade Mario 3d adventure with PS5 graphic capabilities as well as a new Punchout arcade game in the arcade as well. This might cause a major delay for the release of the NX. But in this way it builds up the anticipation of owning the NX system by only able to play potential NX launch launch titles in the arcades. I believe the only people who would understand my comment would be people in thier late 20's, 30's, 40's and up who wished to experience true arcade quality graphics at home back in the day. This idea might sound crazy today. But If you look at how Nintendo releases underpowered hardware with shovelware titles at launch, I can clearly see why Nintendo is no longer the dominant player in the gaming industry.

Smh at Nintendo because of that. Heck I can't even believe that after all these years, they haven't made use of the double screen of the 3ds and ds for a new Punch out game. Nintendo needs to really upgrade thier specs and maybe cater more to thier aging fanbase. Let's face it most kids nowadays don't care too much for Mario since they have Candy Crush on thier phones. Can you believe that I'm still actually waiting for a REAL Super Mario 64 sequel?!

That pretty much sums it up but with Next gen graphics given to new Nintendo arcade games. This just to have us salivate until the new Nintendo console comes out making us want to buy the arcade Mario game on day one.

That's what you said last time Iwata.

At least start this time with a powerful system and build on that. How are you going to get people to buy your system when none of their other favorite games are even offered on yours? At least give those 3rd party dev's something they can work with next time.

I'm real curious what they are going to do. Are they going to make a system more powerful than the PS4/One since they are off cycle to them? Are they going to build a system equal to and then get on cycle? It must be reasonably important for game development. I like games for the immersion factor. I want to be building up to something. Exploring, progression, consequences are all important. To even compare Zelda to Skyrim is simply laughable, yet appeal to the same fan genre. Nintendo needs to create things that compete with the other two, and then have the anime/artistic/cartoon/fun games. Do you have any games with dynamic beard growth?

<< LINK REMOVED >> "Do you have any games with dynamic beard growth?" - Isn't that like the hipster equivalent of watching grass grow? Sounds very exciting and important to a game's playability.. "Um yeah, I liked the look of Splatoon until I realized you can't watch the paint dry, tsk."

Maybe it's going to be the first hardware that is a handheld that attaches to a base to convert it to a home console hub and able to use multiple controllers while the handheld screen changes into a clock with camera.

If it is physical hardware, it needs to be stronger than the PS4. That is the most important thing. If that happens then it will be better fortunes for Nintendo. If it isn't physical hardware, then all bets are off.

Alright well console gimmicks don't work anyone who isn't Nintendo. Kinect is dying and it's like Everbody forgot about sixaxis as soon as it became relevant.

It's a console that taps into the power of the cloud to stream games. Oh wait, no --that's the direction the others are going in. Sony and Microsoft want to compete with Amazon Fire TV.
