The Nintendo 64 hardware price drop GameSpot News reported on Tuesday might be true - if your retailer decides to take part. On June 1, Nintendo put into effect a retailer rebate program that will give stores a rebate of $22 on each unit of N64 hardware they sell between now and September 7, 1998. The program allows retailers to then lower their prices to as low as $129.95 from now until that September 7 end date.

This puts the N64 at a lower price than Sony's Dual Shock system configuration will be, making the N64 an attractive choice for summer players who want something to do on rainy days.

Peter Main, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales and marketing, said in a statement, "Coming out of E3, we got such a great response to the quality lineup of titles we'll be launching from now through the end of the year, we figured this was a good time to offer a price allowing as many consumers as possible to buy an N64. Plus, with Sony's recent new system configuration and pricing, our competitive spirit told us we had to do it!"
