Nintendo NX Is a Console/Mobile Hybrid, Has "Industry-Leading" Tech - Report

Plus, report claims software development kits are now being sent to third-party developers, possibly signalling a release in 2016.

[UPDATE] A Nintendo representative tells GameSpot, “As we previously announced, we will not comment further on NX until 2016."

The original story is below.

According to a new report today from The Wall Street Journal, Nintendo has started to send out software development kits for its upcoming gaming platform, NX. These kits are being sent to unspecified third-party developers so they can modify their existing games or create new ones to run on the upcoming platform.

No Caption Provided

Nintendo declined to comment, reiterating the company line that the Japanese game giant will talk in a more official capacity about NX in 2016. However, analyst David Gibson told WSJ that it looks likely that Nintendo will launch the NX in 2016 "because of the softness of 3DS and Wii U."

One prominent third-party game company that might already have a NX software development kit is Square Enix. During a broadcast in July, Square Enix announced Dragon Quest X and Dragon Quest XI for the NX. However, the company later tempered its comments by saying these projects were only "under consideration." It's possible Square Enix initially spoke too soon.

Exactly what form the NX will take remains unclear. WSJ's sources say the NX, which is still a working title, will come with a console and "at least one mobile unit that could either be used in conjunction with the console or taken on the road for separate use." The NX will also reportedly use "industry-leading chips" in the devices that will presumably allow for better graphics and deeper functionality.

The marquee feature of Nintendo's latest console, the Wii U, is arguably its tablet-like controller. Among other things, it allows users to play full games on the device, though only if they stay relatively close to the main console. If the WSJ's report is accurate, it seems like Nintendo is taking this idea further with the NX.

The Wii U has underperformed, selling only 10 million units since its launch in November 2012.

Nintendo officially announced the NX in March 2015, alongside the news that the company was bringing its franchises to smartphones and tablets through a partnership with mobile gaming giant DeNA.

Earlier this year, a report claimed Nintendo could begin pilot assembly of the NX in October with mass production scheduled to kick off in May or June 2016. The NX, according to the report, would then be released commercially "around July." None of this has been confirmed as of yet.

Nintendo will hold its next earnings briefing on October 28 where it may have more information to share. Former president Satoru Iwata passed away in July, though new president Tatsumi Kimishima has vowed to keep Nintendo on the path that Iwata originally charted as it relates to the NX and mobile gaming.

What are you hoping to see from the NX? Let us know in the comments below.

Nintendo hasn't learned a thing. No one wants a hybrid. Core games don't want mobile garbage, and mobile gamers don't want a console.

So you could either think of it as a Wii U with an even more expensive controller, or a more expensive DS with a home console dock. Whatever the case, I'm buying it. I'll be honest with you, I'll buy anything that has Zelda games.

EDIT: Whoops. I mean except the Philips CD-i.

This most likely means 1 year late ports to the NX is my guess. Black Ops 3 NX Port, I highly doubt Star Wars Battlefront is coming to NX as George Lucas doesn't like Nintendo consoles much and it's being handled by EA if I'm not mistaken as well as ports for other franchises that came out this year.

If enough additional content is added to the late ports, then I'll actually consider them but hopefully they don't try to sell them at full price with the same amount of content the other versions have had for a year like they did with some WiiU ports.

Hopefully I'm wrong and this means new titles however, no dev can push out a top level franchise in 1 year's time which makes me believe in the ports guess. Now maybe they can adapt their currently in development titles over but I don't expect any new titles if they are just now sending out the Dev Kits and it's supposed to release next year.

@Chernnunos: Wii sold because casuals decided that the motion-sensing thing looked cool. Retirement homes bought Wiis to use as physical therapy for their residents. etc. Yes, the games are the reason hardcore gamers bought the Wii, but WAY more Wiis were bought than Gamecubes. 101mil vs. 22mil. The Wii is arguably the reason the mobile market is as large as it is, because people outside of gamers saw the joy in playing games, but couldn't dedicate themselves to a long story or whatnot.

The Nintendo NX sounds like a second Wii U except that the Gamepad part has an actual CPU, PPU and HDD. In addition to the docking base with it's own CPU, HDD etc. As long as Nintendo doesn't cheap out. If they make the NX hybrid technically powerful for 2016. Then it has a chance.

Nintendo...listen to my advice:

Dont release the next console without an AAA Mario,Zelda or a Starfox game...or something new and real huge.

Dont fool youself by thinking that 3rd parties will do the job for you!

I'd say dev kits now is still a more likely 2017 release, unless it's planning a tonne of shovelware.

I'll wait and see before deciding or getting too excited.

I've been a long time Nintendo supporter since day 1 and now that I'm an adult with a family, the Wii U has easily been the best Nintendo console possibly since the SNES. People crap on the gamepad but they don't know what they are talking about. That gamepad is easily the best thing about the Wii U and is a life saver some days. Off screen gaming? Able to play some games 2 players with each having their own screen? Plus the interaction offered by the gamepad for other games. I don't even know how much time my kids have spent playing Mario Maker. My only complain with the Wii U is just how little interest Nintendo seems about putting games out. Yes, they are putting out a bunch of games now but it just doesn't feel the same to me. It seems like handhelds get all the attention and the console business gets very little by comparison. Long story short, if the NX is more like a PS3/Vita combination, I will likely get it. The only real issue we've had with the gamepad has been that short range. Of course, if it doesn't sell we are back to square 1 with not even NIntendo bothering much to focus on game development and instead just dumping a token "main" title to appease the longtime fans.

@ZIMdoom: I agree with you to a point. As a NES gamer since day one getting red eyes with duck hunt I have followed Nintendo and this hobby we love called gaming, but the choices have been getting more narrow and smaller every generation. From 3d games, online, genres, more adult titles, more open world titles, indie - nintendo has taken a back seat and isolated themselves from the gaming industry,

If I want a console for kids, a cheap durable, kid friendly console like Nintendo fits the bill. When I want my Fallout, Bioshocks, Divinity, Skyrims, Witchers, COD games - I have to look elsewhere. Or just the option of a large body of games to choose from. Nintendo's greatest asset is now its greatest problem, which is their board of directors who own the manufacturing plants, designers, and first part developers. Change over to cd-roms? can't because it would devastate the cartridge plants and the board members that own them. Change over to more powerful console - cannot because it would require too much outsourcing and lower profits to the current manufacturing plants, also owned by board members.

This allowed Nintendo to be so innovative, and able to take risks with not only hardware but also games. But as the industry evolved - like the movie industry - Nintendo could not keep up. Now smart phones are stealing away the eyes and dollars of the very young audience and their mobile market. Kids are not flipping out gameboys/3ds on the bus but Iphones and GAlaxies. Instead of AAA consoles kids also prefer tablets which are easier to navigate, but once into teen years want more powerful computer desktops or consoles.

Nintendo has made some very rich people over the years following a certain business model, but now that model is getting outdate and it may be too late to change or evolve. As the average age of the 'gamer' is now over 36 years old and the majority of the money spent is in Mature rated games, Nintendo will keep in it niche (not growing the business but still making profits, though not this gen)

@teaspoon2424: I've used it a lot, as have my young children and not once have any of us felt it was uncomfortable. Sorry. In terms of uncomfortable controllers, I would easily put the N64, GC and DC ahead of the gamepad as those gave me actual pains at the time with extended play. Idiotic is purely your opinion and sorry but I say you are wrong. Innovation and doing something different is not idiotic just because you hate those things. I do agree with the expensive part though if people have had to replace theirs. But most people just buy the console which is cheaper than the competition.

The WiiU is not great. In fact even nintendo doesnt think its great. If they did think it was great we would have had a bunch of games. Yet I own hrm 3 no wait 4 games since release. yeah its garbage.

@ohllama: Yes, you are entitled to your opinion. I am also entitled to mine and I truly believe there is nothing to NOT like about the Wii U gamepad and people who bash it don't know what they are talking about. I stand by that. Meanwhile, the "greatness" of any console is pretty much determined by the level of success it has. That success also tends to determine the games and support it gets, not vice versa. So typically, consoles with low level of success are "not great" and get little developer support while consoles with high sales are typically considered "great" and get lots of developer support. However, since Nintendo is a software developer and hardware maker, they at the very least should be supporting their own console with games. THey wouldn't make a console they didn't believe in and THINK was "great". ALthough you may be right that the lack of game support is due to crap sales. However, there is a part of me that also believes Nintendo games have been the primary driver of NItnendo console sales. So if Wii U sales suck it could also be because Nintendo's crap support from the start. If the Wii U is "garbage" it isn't because the hardware itself, but because Nintendo seems to be clueless and our of touch with the modern gaming market. Time and time again they have shown that they don't care what gamers want...they are only going to make what THEY want and what they feel gamers should buy. And in that case, Nintendo really hasn't changed and it is this attitude of "what we want not what you want" that sank them in the mid-to-late 90s.

@ZIMdoom: @ohllama: Well you both are wrong, the tablet controller for the Wii U is really great, durable, and innovative .... to a very small and niche audience and is NOT for HARDCORE gamers who love this stupid hobby we call gaming. Which is my opinion, the only one that counts.

And neither of you are entitled to your opinions because they are not laced with enough fanboyisms, insults, skewed facts and your arguments make too much sense. Please follow the Gamespot guidelines when talking about consoles.

@ZIMdoom: I follow you on this. And agree with you as well on some points.

Nintendo could have backed their system better by actually making games for it. Using their huge list of Titles that people love.

Metroid? Nope. Zelda? Nope. Pokemon? Nope Star fox? nope. (i say this because it will probably be a NX release) I also think it looks like a 1998 game.

I own mario kart, smash, monster hunter, bayo but like... Nothing else out there interest me. At all. I remember when I was a kid and the NES released and I begged my parents for it. And by the time I got a SNES I had hundreds of NES games. Now its like with every iteration of a nintendo console my library gets smaller and smaller.

I also stand by the controller sucks. Because it cramps my hands. I also live alone and have no kids so I have no reason for a mini tablet. But again. Thats just me. I can see where playing on the screen instead of the tv could be a plus.

@ZIMdoom: I agree with you. I love my Wii U, and one of my biggest complaint has been the lack of games for the WII U. The Wii U has some of the best games I've ever played, but it feels like there could have been even more. We needed a Metroid, a NEW Zelda (still waiting), a new Animal Crossing. I would have even enjoyed seeing additional remakes or remasters like the original Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Sunshine, etc... I just hope we get more games with the next console.

@this_bro_knows: Nintendo games are just to narrow or limited to for me anymore. Big open world, advanced enemy AI's, complex physics, mature themes, and a large variety of choice is just not on the console this gen or for the last few gens of gaming. My last 'must have' titles for the Nintendo have been MArio Sunshine and Pikmen. Since then titles like, Bioshock, DArksouls, Mass effect, fallout, Modern Warfares, xcom, and dozens of JRPGS like tales of games are just not on the nintendo consoles. MY kids play on their phones, everyone else I know plays on PC or 8th gen consoles.

@jenovaschilld: I agree with you in that I really like big, open-world, advanced games, but I also like to play Nintedo's titles. I am usually playing a lot of games at one given time, so sometimes it's hard for me to want to commit to playing a game that could take 60+ hours to beat because when I start a game like that, I don't like to take breaks from it. I can still beat a lot of Nintendo games in only a few sittings, which I like, and I genuinely still enjoy the games, as well, but I realize that Nintendo doesn't have the appeal to everyone anymore and has become more of a niche market.

You mentioned you liked Pikmin. I really enjoyed Pikmin 3 on the Wii U. I have to admit it was my first Pikmin title I've played, but I liked it so much I've played through the campaign 3 times already. It's definitely in my top 5 best games on the Wii U list.

You also made an interesting comment about kids playing on their phones. This is so sad and true. We have such a greater amount of games and such better hardware today than when we were kids, but all kids want to is play these cheap, quick games on their phone. It blows my mind.

@superveka: You got older, and needed games that have mature content, stronger physics, more advanced enemy AI, or online features. If they brought out a updated Pikmen, but didn't add much else...... would still have as much impact.

Well, I believe it will be a New Wii U, mobile base that can be taken out or in conjunction, also Nintendo entering mobile industry, a company that never mix with others, suddenly doing that, maybe this is the only place their "mobile" games will work.
