Clairifying media reports, the game giant says the device in question will be neither console nor portable.

Contradicting earlier reports in the media, including GameSpot, Nintendo is saying that its next-generation console will NOT be unveiled at next May's E3.

Nintendo's executive director Jinyou Mori clarified that the new product will be a unique item that is different from any traditional machine. "We hope to present a new product in America's expo [E3] next year, which will be completely different from the traditional [machines]. We hope we can release it within the year in Japan," said Mori. "It would be ideal if we can release it simultaneously overseas." When asked if the product was going to be a home console or a portable machine, Mori commented that it would be neither.

Nintendo is developing a next-generation game console to succeed the GameCube. However, the company has not made any specific announcements regarding when it will arrive on store shelves, other than saying its release date will be "competitive" with Sony's PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 2.
