Nintendo Hopes to Share 2D and 3D Metroid News "in the Near Future"

A new Metroid game wasn't announced at E3 this week, but it sounds as if one (or more) are, at the very least, being considered.

Nintendo is well aware of fans' desire to see both 2D and 3D Metroid games in the future. In fact, it's hoping to share news regarding both styles "in the near future," according to Nintendo's Shinya Takahashi.

In an interview with Kotaku, the subject of a new Metroid was brought up. Shigeru Miyamoto responded by saying, "The original creators of Metroid and the director who was the director of the Metroid Prime games who worked under me when I was producing those both now work for Mr. Takahashi, so you'll have to ask him."

No Caption Provided

Takahashi then shared some tantalizing information: "So it has been a while since we released the last one and we're having discussions internally about what we can do next. So at this point we have two different types of Metroid games. We have the Prime style of Metroid game and we have the more traditional style of Metroid game. We feel that we do need to take care of both of these styles of play. And the hope is that at some point in the near future we'll be able to share something about them."

Many gamers expected a new Metroid to be unveiled at E3 this week when Nintendo scheduled a lengthy event to announce a 3DS game on Wednesday night. Instead, we learned that game would be a new IP, which proved to be Code Name: STEAM, a strategy game from Fire Emblem and Advance Wars developer Intelligent Systems. Metroid wasn't seen at all during E3, unless you count Samus appearing in Super Smash Bros.

The most recent game in the Metroid series was 2010's Metroid: Other M, the Team Ninja-developed action game for Wii that many fans bemoaned for its treatment of Samus' character. Prior to that, it was Metroid Prime 3: Corruption in 2007. In other words, the series has been mostly quiet for much of the last decade--which is exactly how long it's been since the last 2D Metroid game (Metroid: Zero Mission for Game Boy Advance) was released.

To many, a new Metroid seems like an obvious way to drum up excitement for the Wii U, which has struggled since its launch in November 2012. One thing we do know about the next Metroid is that series co-creator Yoshio Sakamoto is unlikely to be involved; after working on Tomodachi Life, he said earlier this year that he isn't interested in returning to traditional games.

What would you like to see next from the Metroid series? Let us know in the comments below.

Finish the prime series, we were left with the purple spaceship following Samus's ship into warp at the end of MP3, so get on with it! No more zero missions, or other M's, finish the stories at hand, like prime or fusion which was abandoned in the GBA era...

I want a remake of hunters on 3ds,i love that style, its retro pc style graphics, and I could imagine it being amazing, addicting, competitive, and fun.It would add another multiplayer title to the 3ds,which we need more competitive multiplayer, also it would be the first true fps with multiplayer on the 3ds,i look at the game MOON chronicles, and that looks badass, i love the style of graphics, and it reminds me so much of Metroid hunters, yet it does not have multiplayer,if they could do it on a ds over 8 years ago, there should be no trouble doing it on the 3ds,and it looking a lot better.

For the love of god, I swear the hypocrisy of the people at Gamespot is so infuriating! For the last few weeks it's been nothing but positive news for Nintendo(Finally for a change because I will admit it was really bad there for awhile and even though the Wii U might not be selling "great", we can all agree that it is selling "good" since the release of Mario Kart) yet the bias people at Gamestpot STILL want to try to sneak in there little one liners about how the Wii U is struggling. And here is where the true hypocrisy starts, because while Gamespot continues to bash Nintendo at almost every opportunity they can, they completely ignore the absolute failure of the Xbox One and have even praised it's failing in the last fews weeks!

Microsoft refuses to tell how many systems have been sold to the public in the last 6 months which is a very bad sign, yet this fact is ignored. Microsoft cuts the price of the Xbox one not once, but twice in a four month period and for some reason Gamespot doesn't see that as any sign of trouble, but when the Wii U had a price drop there were nonstop articles about how it's doomed. Microsoft has said repeatedly that the Xbox one was bulit specifically for the kinect and the two will always been sold together no matter what because they're inseparable. Seven months later after releasing the Xbox one, Microsoft is so desperate to sell systems they're release a version of the Xbox one without the kinect, it's main selling point, and once again there isn't one single word about the Xbox one struggling.

This is great news! I say this all the time, but I'll buy a Wii U for a new 2D Metroid game. Seriously, Smash Bros isn't a system-seller to me anymore, and neither is Zelda, Mario, or even Star Fox. Metroid Prime? Nope, I'll pass. Another M? Heck no. But an honest-to-goodness 2D Metroid in the vein of Super Metroid? For real? I'm all in! Even though it's the only game on the console I'll ever play.

One stipulation, though: no gimmicks. If, like the new Star Fox, it's designed solely to justify the Gamepad's existence, then the deal's off.

But seriously, it's been ten freakin' years since the last real Metroid game. It's great to hear they're actually talking about it, but it sucks to know that it's not coming out for at least a few years more, if ever. I mean, they still haven't committed to anything.

I thought that Metroid corruption was too awkward in controls. It looked really great and if it had also been playable with the 'pro' controller (the usual Gamecube one) I would have been hooked. I still think that Metroid Prime and Metroid 2 are the most amazing first person shooters I have ever played. I never got beyond 98%, but I still love them (hoping I get 100% once).

It is the one game I will buy a new Nintendo console for.

As a Huge Nintendo Fan I abhor how games now have to be "Mature" and "Realistic" and "Dark" But for Nintendo that is what Metroid represents, from the 2D games to prime and even other M that is what Metroid does. So Nintendo...make a new Prime game with a realistic art style and huge campaign an solid online Multiplayer.

But don't forget to metroid.... We need to be stuck in a room for an hour until we realize we were suppose to shoot a wall or something.

As long as Metroid returns in a "back to basics" kind of way, I don't care if it's 2D or 3D... Just make it structured like Metroid Prime or Super Metroid, keep the minimalist story elements, feeling of isolation, etc. I'd prefer a 3DS game since I'm not that interested in buying a Wii U...

I know people will call me insane and a heretic but I did NOT like the 2D Metroid games. This includes Super Metroid. I thought that the Prime games were a blessing from heaven and hope for more of that.

I would prefer a third person game where you have to go first person to scan and what not. Also it would be sick to have a hidden megaman costume since yknow smash bros got nintendo buddied up with capcom.

By 2D and 3D I really hope they mean two games.

If they are making one for the 3DS I would much prefer it be 2D. Just because the 3DS is capable of low res 3D games doens't mean everything made for the system needs to be.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Uh, just because the 3DS is capable of low res 2D games doesn't mean it needs to be made for that system, either. I don't think I'll ever understand why everyone immediately jumps to wanting to put the 2D Metroid on the handheld. I'd rather play it on my 73" TV, and I'd rather it had a large budget and the best graphics and sound that Nintendo can pull off. I suppose if it were to come to the 3DS, though, it would save me from having to buy a Wii U.

From my perspective, it might be wise to introduce less linearity and a world you can actually manipulate in lasting way to classic metroid gameplay.

And don't sacrifice the secluded, mysterious, interactive and wonderous nature of your next metroid-world for a lame story-driven progression.

Metroid is about finding your way through mysterious wonders and dangers - not about catering to stupid audiences, which lack imagination and taste.

Metroid: Other M was NOT a bad game! The story made you love samus all the more. The problem was simply the game mechanics and style of the game was not a fans expectations for Metroid. I for one love the depth they went into Samus as a human instead of some generic female with no life except loves killing bugs. Anyway, I would love a full on online mode no matter what type of game they make.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Metroid Fusion may have gotten a hard time for all its dialogue, except I don't remember anyone saying they hated Samus' characterization. Other M was clearly based on what was established in Fusion, but it seems they got Samus really wrong--why didn't they just stick to the character she was in Fusion? I guess they just liked her better the way they made her instead and must've thought everyone else would, too.

As if exploring unkown dangers and wonders was the life a "generic person".

As if polluting your social environment with your feeble ambitions and personal problems was not the life of your average person.

Give me a break, Mr. Logic!

Anyways. The action found in Metroid: Other M was great - the linearity, the story-driven progression and the unimagnative world lacking mystery were not.

I'm glad to hear it. Though I wouldn't mind if Retro Studios was working on a Donkey Kong 64 sequel instead. They did great with DKC Returns and Tropical Freeze, so I'd love to see if they can do a good 3D DK.
