Nintendo Explains Why The New 2DS XL Exists

Reggie Fils-Aime says the New 2DS XL is for consumers who want something "in between."

Nintendo recently announced another model in its long-running 3DS line: the New 2DS XL combines the screen size and clamshell form factor of the 3DS XL, the built-in NFC capability of the New Nintendo 3DS, and the budget price associated with the 2DS.

With so many different iterations of the console now available--not forgetting the standard 3DS or the New 3DS--some people have wondered why the New 2DS XL exists at all.

Now, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has said the device is for consumers who want something "in between" the 2DS and the 3DS XL.

"The Nintendo 2DS really focused on that entry level gamer," he told Time. "The four-, five-, six-year old that is just getting into gaming, but wants to play Mario Kart, wants to have a Super Mario Bros. experience, wants to play Pokémon. And we feel with Nintendo 3DS XL at $199 that it's a fully-featured product, that it is, if you will, the Cadillac of handheld gaming. And then we heard from consumers, 'Boy, I wish there was something in between.'" That's why the company decided to make the 2DS XL, says Fils-Aime.

The executive had previously said the that the device "still packs the same power" of the New Nintendo 3DS XL.

The Nintendo 2DS originally launched in 2013. Billed as an entry-level device for children, the system features two screens but no clamshell hinge and no 3D capability. It launched at $130, before Nintendo cut the price down to $80 / £80.

The New 2DS XL, meanwhile, will launch on July 28 in North America and Europe, priced at $149 / £133. Australian players will get it earlier on June 15, costing AU $200.

The announcement of this system came not long after Nintendo launched the Switch. The system debuted in March and has sold 2.74 million units by Nintendo's latest count.

@mkh: If that was the goal, then why did they discontinue a clearly profitable product in the NES classic?

@Thanatos2k: Mr. Hate Goggles!!! Your typical consumer brain cannot grasps how businesses actually run do you? If you really think Nintendo was making any kind of substantial profit then you are WRONG!!! Nintendo was probably making like $2-$3 profit off the NES classic. All that did was to pay their toilet paper bill for 1 year.

@Thanatos2k: only scalpers were making money on the NESC. I bet Nintendo made less than $10 per unit and no games for it.

@endersdragon: LOL less than 10 dollars. You are high as a kite. The NES classic is the most basic pf Raspberry Pi put in a box and with production and manufacturing, already using other's emulator software, AND ROMS TO BOOT, (Legally they can do this) they were at a 1.7 margin. Come on. How much are you paid to say garbage like this?

@Utnayan: Yes way less than $10. They still have to pay the licensing fees for the games that were put on the system. They had to pay for the hardware included. They had to pay for the box it was put in. They had to pay for the advertising. They had to pay for the shipping FROM JAPAN. After that they had to give the big boxes a cut of something. So yes, after all that they made very little ($2-$3) from the NES Classic.

@endersdragon: Do you know what a sensible business does to a product that constantly sells out when you make more? You raise the price until the supply curve meets the demand curve and you make the most money. Econ 101.

@Thanatos2k: Mr. Hate Goggles!!! One second your saying Nintendo is full of greed. The next they aren't greedy enough? Seriously man, you sure love to speak out of both sides of your troll mouth. Pulling at all kinds of straws just to try and fit your hate agenda. Bottom of the barrel...

We all know the 3DS line was successful, but Nintendo's going to have to let go of it sometime. If they want the Switch to succeed, their going to have to phase the 3DS out.

@tracerxxi: I am sure they eventually will but even the ps3 was selling after the ps4 came out and is still getting big games today. As long as there aren't big 3ds exclusives after this year it seems fine to me,

@vfighter: Cause then they can focus on 1 system...see the Wii U & 3DS, they had to pick one to support..they chose 3DS...they even admitted to neglecting the Wii U, they can't support 2 systems by themselves....watch their past Nintendo Directs (after Wii U & 3DS launch) majority of their Nintendo Directs focus on 3DS. :P

@superbuuman: Wrong. They have had to focus on two systems since the Gameboy. They didn't have a problem then. They don't have a problem now.

@superbuuman: Wrong. He said that he will integrate all systems to make it easier to release games for both ecosystems. NOT that they can't sustain two systems. They have been doing it for 25 years or so. They are now making it easier to do so.

@fig56: Yea keep believing that 3DS will be here forever lol...I'll believe in the system they have actually release. They may have a mini Switchy in the works (smaller)..that will however have the same architecture as the normal Switch...unlike the 3DS which is a completely different architecture. :P

@superbuuman: I never said it was going to last forever. I'm not new to gaming man. I have been in the game for 30+ years. But your right they have something in the works with the same architecture as the Switch. But even if it looks similar to the Switch that it will not be called a Switch mini. It will be called something completely different.

@vfighter: Umm, when the Switch is every bit as portable as the 2DS XL only more powerful then no they aren't. They are exactly the same except the Switch is more powerful and only an idiot would buy a 2DS XL if they have the option of a Switch instead.

@BrokutheMighty: Not really , the switch doesn't offer anywhere near the catalogue of games the 2DS does. I wish you could just play the same games on the Switch to improve the library actually.

It's not bad reasoning. There are people like me out there who bought the original 3DS back when it was $250 and need an upgrade. My Circle Pad hasn't broken off like some people, but it's really worn down, as are basically all my buttons. I put a decent amount of time into my 3DS still, but I don't want to commit $200 for a full upgrade, despite the fact that I've had to basically force myself to not play anything remotely fast-paced. $150 is much better, especially since the only two notable differences between the New 2DS XL and the New 3DS XL are the lack of 3D and how the hinge is designed.

If Smash for the Switch's release window is not close enough to July 28th, I'm getting myself an early birthday present.

This illustrates why the switch, for all it's early sales, may not be the moneymaker people think. It's having to replace both Nintendo's handheld and home consoles. And while Nintendo seems not to have realized it yet, the 3/2Ds has been replaced.

@RS13: Plus, 3D HD Switch software development is going to cost significantly more than the cheap 240p 2D Zelda/Mario/Pokemon/Fire Emblem games they always shovel out every year for their handhelds. All of those franchises will now have to look good on a full size TV as well. Huge difference in budget required which cuts into their profits, since Nintendo is still struggling to adapt to HD game development.

Tone deaf. I would like a restock of the smaller New 3DS. I'm wondering if this new 2DS is just an anti lawsuit measure in defense of the newest games missing 3D. Btw new 3DS games that don't support 3D should mention that on the packaging and downloads page. I expected DQ8 to be in 3D.

I own both the New 3ds XL and the 2ds. With all honesty I prefer how the 2ds feels on my hands compared to the 3ds XL. I think Nintendo made a bad choice with 2ds xl, I would've preferred instead a New Nintendo 2ds keeping the same 2ds design, a bigger screen the size of a regular 3ds, and the additional buttons.

@Zero_Maniac: The Vita is shiny but it ain't no Cadillac. While the 3DS isn't as shiny, it certainly outshines the Vita's value with the software you get on it. ''Fisher Price'' or not.

@lebanese_boy: The Vita runs circles around the 3DS from a hardware perspective. The system itself is of a much, much higher quality and capabilities. We're not talking about the software. His analogy was apt.

@Thanatos2k: His analogy is inapt precisely because there's nothing analogous to the hardware/software distinction in cars.

@Zero_Maniac: Again; It's shiny but not a cadillac. Yeah it's more capable and looks glossier... but nothing more. Cadillac isn't just about being good to look at, it takes you places. The Vita is sexy to look at but it's not going to move you anywhere.
