Nintendo Explains Why The New 2DS XL Exists

Reggie Fils-Aime says the New 2DS XL is for consumers who want something "in between."

Nintendo recently announced another model in its long-running 3DS line: the New 2DS XL combines the screen size and clamshell form factor of the 3DS XL, the built-in NFC capability of the New Nintendo 3DS, and the budget price associated with the 2DS.

With so many different iterations of the console now available--not forgetting the standard 3DS or the New 3DS--some people have wondered why the New 2DS XL exists at all.

Now, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has said the device is for consumers who want something "in between" the 2DS and the 3DS XL.

"The Nintendo 2DS really focused on that entry level gamer," he told Time. "The four-, five-, six-year old that is just getting into gaming, but wants to play Mario Kart, wants to have a Super Mario Bros. experience, wants to play Pokémon. And we feel with Nintendo 3DS XL at $199 that it's a fully-featured product, that it is, if you will, the Cadillac of handheld gaming. And then we heard from consumers, 'Boy, I wish there was something in between.'" That's why the company decided to make the 2DS XL, says Fils-Aime.

The executive had previously said the that the device "still packs the same power" of the New Nintendo 3DS XL.

The Nintendo 2DS originally launched in 2013. Billed as an entry-level device for children, the system features two screens but no clamshell hinge and no 3D capability. It launched at $130, before Nintendo cut the price down to $80 / £80.

The New 2DS XL, meanwhile, will launch on July 28 in North America and Europe, priced at $149 / £133. Australian players will get it earlier on June 15, costing AU $200.

The announcement of this system came not long after Nintendo launched the Switch. The system debuted in March and has sold 2.74 million units by Nintendo's latest count.

When it comes to consoles, the writing is on the wall: they're losing ground. It's very gradual, and they still have a lot of time left, but even so, fewer and fewer people are buying them. As things stand, the long-term numbers simply aren't there anymore.

So the console companies *need* to adjust their strategy, or else they'll just keep gradually bleeding out. So far, it looks like MS and Nintendo are doing just that. In fact, if this article is anything to go by, they seem to have chosen the same basic strategy: create a platform and just run with it. If they do it right, they can have a long-lasting branded platform that plays everything in perpetuity, without even having to worry about backwards compatibility.

Meanwhile, Sony seems to be sticking with the same-old-same-old: change platforms every few years and expect their loyal fans to follow. It's worked so far, but it seems like a much riskier strategy to just keep doing the same thing and expect it to go on working. After all, tech and the gaming environment keep evolving, and what works one decade could very well end up being obsolete the next. Then again, maybe the release of the PS4 Pro is Sony's way of dipping their toes in the same waters that MS and Nintendo are testing.

I guess we'll see how well this shake-up of the console scene works. But either way, it's a good sign that they're trying *something*, because going on like they have been is definitely a losing proposition.

"the device is for consumers who want something "in between" the 2DS and the 3DS XL."

Wait, wouldn't that be the already existing New 3DS (non-XL)?

@Elranzer: Which functionally doesn't exist in America. It's only ever been available in special promotional bundles apart from the black and white Mario Edition versions which were a Black Friday deal last year (lucky me, I got one).

@Ryusui: But the smaller New 3DS exists in Japan and Europe as a regular SKU. So to Japan and Europe, where the heck does this New 2DS XL fit in the scheme? Who would buy the New 2DS XL over the New 3DS?

And the fact that the New 3DS is not readily available in the United States is just another odd Nintendo of America-ism. Thanks Reggie.

(Disclaimer: I have the New 3DS Super Mario Black Edition, and it's my preferred DS unit.)

It exists so that the NES Classic may not, anymore. It also exists to keep the price of the 3DS XL at $200.

With the launch of ANOTHER 3DS does anyone still believe the BS Nintendo fed about discontinuing the NES Classic to "concentrate their production efforts into the Switch ...." ????

He talks like it has less features. Only difference is removing the 3D, which it seems most people turn off anyway. This thing will be more popular than the 3DS. Preordered one for my 10 yr old from Best Buy for his birthday in August.

@Reagan2791: I gotta admit, I don't see this thing doing anything but putting New 3DS hardware in more people's hands. XD

I'll admit the lack of the flip-top design was always a big turnoff with the 2DS. Now they've got what amounts to an N3DS XL at a discount price. This is a big thing.

@Ryusui: the 2ds was designed for 4, 5, and 6 year olds. It is very durable. My kids have a habit of breaking hinges, like on the clam shell design. Lol

I've had the New 3DS XL since launch and boy I haven't been disappointed!

One of the best systems I've ever owned! I just had to open the back so I could put a 32gb memory card.

Keep the games coming!

What's your source on the £133 UK price?

As far as I know Nintendo UK haven't announced a price yet, and it's not available for sale on their official online store or other retailers.

-"The four-, five-, six-year old that is just getting into gaming”-

That’s right, Nintendo. Get’ em while they’re young, lol. I remember back in the day when parents all over were worried that kids playing videogames at such an early age was terrible and would lead to them becoming antisocial.

Total nonsense. After all, I played videogames when I was young and I turned out videogames.
