Nintendo Discontinues NES Classic Edition Globally [Update]

Victim of its own success.

Update [April 19]: The NES Classic Edition has also been discontinued in Europe, a Nintendo spokesperson told Eurogamer. The console, which was called the NES Classic Mini in the territory, is no longer being manufactured in Europe. Combined with the discontinuation in Japan, that now means the miniature console is now out of print worldwide.

Original story follows [April 13].

After just six months on the market, Nintendo says it is discontinuing the NES Classic Edition in North America. Nintendo did not provide a specific reason for why the console is being discontinued, but the plug-and-play system has been plagued with supply issues; months after its launch it was still selling out almost as quickly as new shipments were released.

"Throughout April, NOA territories will receive the last shipments of Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition systems for this year," Nintendo said in a statement.

"We encourage anyone interested in obtaining this system to check with retail outlets regarding availability. We understand that it has been difficult for many consumers to find a system, and for that we apologize. We have paid close attention to consumer feedback, and we greatly appreciate the incredible level of consumer interest and support for this product."

Nintendo has only said, so far, that the NES Classic Edition is being discontinued in North America. When asked whether the discontinuation would be applied globally, a representative from Nintendo said, “Please see the statements made by Nintendo in other territories.”

The NES Classic Edition launched last November, coming preloaded with 30 classic NES games. When asked if these classic games will be made available on the Switch or another system, Nintendo only said “We have nothing to announce at this time.”

Typical Nintendo. Making all the wrong insane moves. I think I'm giving up on them for good now as a company that will ever "GET IT" They just don't and apparently won't... ever... So Nintendo wants to give a big FU to everyone and seemingly toy with people? Okay. we can do the same Nintendo. I think it would be pretty hilarious if everyone else did the same and suddenly Nintendo experienced some fear, humility, panic and desperation of their own... they obviously feel they don't need much money so F em. I'm done... Well Nintendo?... B y e.

Hello Games' shady tactics helped me accurately predict the Molyneuxization of No Man's Sky.

Because of its "play anywhere with anyone" hook, I knew the Nintendo Switch would be a massive success among young adults and professionals.

Due more to niche applications than extensive R&D costs, I knew virtual reality's return in 2016 would fizzle outside of die-hard audiences.

But this?

I did not see this one coming.
Make way for the Switch virtual console!

NEVER thought I'd see the day where Microsoft is making all the right moves to be gamer-friendly, and Nintendo is giving Mario's middle finger to die hard fans.

@ikcizokm: Hey, why not? We have the globalist media saying all white men are racist woman haters every day. We now live in bizarro-world. Before you know it, people will want chips in their bodies and think a global government is a good idea......oh wait.

Well that was quick. Was hard enough to find one even when it was still in production. I guess they don't want your money.

I guess the Nintendo Switch has something to do with it as they are only focusing their full effort into producing Nintendo Switch and in hopes that if people want to buy a Nintendo console the only legitimist choice is the Nintendo Switch. They don't even want The NES classic to be in the way of the Nintendo Switch.

@darksouls: not really, charging $5 a game on Virtual Console on the switch will be big money, having a hackable NES classic that can hold every NES game plus more can impact VC game sales. Greedy yes, dumb no

@valhallaoutcast: That's assuming people who wanted this thing will buy a Switch and the games for $5 now that they can't buy one.

I personally can't see it happening. It sold because it was a cool novelty and it came with 30 games. No one is going to buy those 30 games on the Switch for $150. They'll at most buy a few that they want and skip the rest.

@valhallaoutcast: forgot about the hacking. If you read the statement closely it says "Throughout April, NOA territories will receive the last shipments of Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition systems for this year,". Maybe they will release a new one for Christmas that is secure? If not, I say f$&k Nintendo! I have been one of their biggest fans for over 30 years, but this is beyond asinine. I already have one, but there are many that want one that will never get it. I have spent my last dime on Nintendo crap!

CLASSIC Nintendo, shoot themselves in the foot any chance they get. "Here at Nintendo we recognize we are having trouble keeping up with the demand for this product, instead of increasing production to meet the demand and make a healthy profit we have chosen to discontinue the item in question" Airtight marketing

Nintendo being Nintendo. I thought I would get back on the Nintendo train but seems I may just be done with them for life. Sony and MS also bore me these days so I've been gearing to move to PC and even mobile.

People are going to be super ready for the SNES Classic, bet they'll buy it like there's no tomorrow.

Edit: "last shipments of Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition systems for this year"

Nintendo is making sure people go crazy the next time it's out.

I have to say that this seems a really odd decision.

Either piracy or its making a loss to produce can be the only reason not to keep selling it with such high demand.

Maybe they planned a version II with other games, but piracy is killing that idea.

Just seems odd otherwise.

@barcaazul: agreed it was so easy to hack and add every game, this combined with worrying what that hacked console will do to any ideas that have of seeling games individually on the switch throught virtual console

This is probably why they are offering a reward of 20k to people able to crack the 3DS or Switch.

This really doesn't make any sense at all. But, it goes to show that Nintendo is either making no profit from selling the NES Classic or is making so little money that it makes no sense to keep making this product regardless of the demand. Either way I better find a way to get my hand on a few more of these before I really can't find anymore.

@fig56: good points, it could have been a low revenue item just to create the Nintendo buzz again, with the Wii U not being super great and a un announced Switch on the way they needed to get the Nintendo buzz going

That sucks, there were some good games on there and I really wanted to get one despite having many of those already on the Virtual Console for the Wii and Wii U. I'm really hoping that they bring out one for the SNES and allow for downloading more games for it.

I can think of only one reason why Nintendo pulled the plug. If people play roms on it for free then who is going to pay for the new online subscription where you get these roms/games for free? It was a treat for their new subscription. I can't find one good reason to buy a Nintendo again. I am happy with my snes and super everdrive thank you.

@tinoush: agreed I also think it was to do with not wanting a reason for people not to have online with Switch or fear it would cripple the virtual conole on Switch

Meh - glad that I have my 100 or so must play games in my Launch Box Library. Much better experience than the NES Classic anyway. A couple of those titles on the NES classic are throwaways anyway. Waste of money if you weren't able to pick on up for the retail price.

So much missed revenue, never to be regained in another form-factor.

...and so much for those assumptions that "in 6mo there will be piles discounted at Walmart." The Amazon and eBay reseller stock both spiked and sold out immediately.

Thanks Nintendon't...

I really wanted one of these for myself and Son...

I was thinking of getting a Switch at some point, but unless you've got a Treasure Trove of excellent games for that on the way in the next few years, you can Forget It!!!

Well, it is official: Nintendo has absolutely no idea what the hell they are doing. You absolutely cannot fail any harder at a company without seriously putting some time and effort into doing so as Nintendo has done regarding the NES Classic Mini.

It's a computer chip and a piece of plastic. It's something that people actually WANT to buy from the company. And somehow they can't manage to get them produced and out to stores. Yet, they'll flood the market with another 30,000,000 Mario Amiibos over the next 6 months.

It's really friggan stupid that they would do this. They could make so much money if they just kept making them. The demand is so high. I doubt there's a single retailer out there that has any left, at least the ones that aren't mocking the price up.
