Nintendo apologizes for lack of Wii U software

President Satoru Iwata says desire to meet quality standards has led to delays, promises more new games beginning in March.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata apologized today for a drought of new Wii U releases in the first few months of the system's availability. He explained that Nintendo understands the need for new titles surrounding the Wii U launch, but also acknowledged that achieving quality is of the utmost importance.

No Caption Provided

"Nintendo takes seriously its responsibility offer a steady stream of new titles in the very early days of a new platform to establish a good lineup of software," Iwata said during a Nintendo Direct briefing this morning. "On the other hand, we also firmly believe we have to offer quality experiences when we release new titles. Based on our software development schedules at the end of last year, we concluded we should spend a little more time to satisfy our Nintendo standard of quality.

"I apologize to those supporting Wii U about the lack of new titles from Nintendo in January and February. But please understand we will have new titles to offer from March onward. We are planning a steady stream of games from spring to summer."

In recent weeks, Nintendo has bumped a number of "launch window" titles further into the horizon, including The Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, Wii Fit U, and Game & Wario.

Elsewhere in the Nintendo Direct presentation, Iwata revealed a bevy of new first-party games, including a brand-new Wii U Legend of Zelda game and a Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker high-definition remake. Other first-party Wii U titles revealed during the presentation included new Yoshi, Mario, and Mario Kart offerings.

You know what this apology really is about?
It's simple: they now are certain that the shelf life for Wii U will be very short thanks to the competition releasing true next-gen consoles this year or in 2014 at most.

They need to sell as much Wii U consoles they can before E3. Right now, people like us, who peruse gaming websites often, are a fraction of the core gaming user base and won't make much of a difference in the grand scheme of things if we decide to wait and see the new consoles before purchasing the Wii U. But once the "PS4" and the "X720" are shown in such a visible place such as E3, then all stripes of gamers will be aware of them, and may very well decide to wait, too.

Nintendo has six months to build a meaningful enough user base for the Wii U so to guarantee there'll be at least *some* third-party support to it even after the release of the true next-gen consoles. Otherwise it'll have the same fate as the GameCube, no doubt.

@RealFabioSooner I really want Nintendo to succeed this time as current generation platform, because I want it to be my main console as it once was. But, yeah, the competition might be tough.

Just like how the Wii's shelf life was short? Oh wait it wasn't. As far as I'm concerned and if all the rumors are true, your "true next-gen consoles" won't be much more powerful than the Wii U and won't do much convincing in the graphics department, instead they'll be offering something new gameplay wise like how the Wii U is doing it with the GamePad but their own way.

@abHS4L88 The success of the Wii has no bearing at all on the Wii U's success. Everything surrounding it is completely different:

1. The Wii was launched 1 year after the Xbox and right alongside the PS3 and there was no more powerful, new consoles on sight for years to come.

2. What the Wii did was really novel for the time. In comparison, the Wii U is just adding and betting on stuff that was already available in some form (touchscreens, asymmetrical gameplay). It's good stuff that should be in every new console from now on, but it still doesn't get even close to the level of novelty motion controls offered before - and it's already proven it won't have the same appeal for the most casual share of the market.

3. Economic climate is totally different. People had way more money to burn before. Now they not only have less money, but they've got a lot of gadgets at home to compete with the Wii U for space, time and interest. Even the very Wii is a competitor in that sense.

4. If all the most recent rumors about the "PS4" and "X720" having specs like 8 GB of RAM and 8x CPU cores are true, they *will* outstrip the Wii U by an *obscene* amount. (see this for example: http://kotaku.com/5977849/the-playstation-4-has-a-new-controller-fancy-user-accounts-and-impressive-specs-so-far?utm_campaign=Socialflow_Kotaku_Twitter&utm_source=Kotaku_Twitter&utm_medium=Socialflow&post=56537370)

Note that I'm not the kind of gamer that believes this is *essential*, I'm just acknowledging that lots of people, both 'hardcore' and 'casual' gamers, do pay attention to actual graphical power. And if MS and Sony can show games that are ostensibly better graphically than what we have on current consoles (and the Wii U doesn't do anything better than them right now in visual terms), this *will* be a factor for lots of people when they purchase a new console at the holidays.

@RealFabioSooner

Thank you for your reasonable response (kind of hard to come by on these boards nowadays) but I do think the situation is still favorable for Nintendo provided they take the right steps.

1. The Wii proved that just because there are more powerful consoles present, it won't take away the appeal of the more affordable consoles, especially coming out after the other two whereas the weakest console was usually the first out of the gate (like the PS2, not counting the beloved Dreamcast).

2. The Wii U does have more of a challenge in its appeal than the Wii but it is all in the marketing. In order to gain the appeal of the "casual market" Nintendo really needs to push the Wii U's capabilities with Nintendo TVii because that's something that I believe many families would find extremely appealing, especially when the DVR capabilities come in (provided it can work separate from a DVR, essentially becoming a 2nd digital box).

3. Very true, but this can work in the Wii U's favor. If the next gen Playstation/XBox are indeed much more powerful, with great power comes a great price (lol), so this could very well give Nintendo an extra year to get a bigger leap in sales due to a much more affordable price. Also I wouldn't put it past Nintendo to drop the price a bit if the other two launch with a competitive price.

4. I highly doubt the 8 GB of RAM rumor because for consoles right now (or even for the next half decade) 8 GB of RAM is an unnecessary amount unless part of that RAM is meant for a system OS and even then 8 GB is still a huge amount. 4GB would probably be the most the next systems will have, and half of that will probably be dedicated for gaming. As for the 8 cores rumor, the rumors also indicate that the CPU may have more cores, but will hardly operate better than the Wii U's CPU. The recent Nvidia article regarding the next gen Playstation/XBox's GPU reveals a GPU that's hardly better than the Wii U's.

Of course, this is all speculation and we won't know for certain until those consoles are released but either way, both scenarios could still be favorable for Nintendo. Obviously it'll be favorable for them if the next gen Playstation/XBox are barely more powerful because then the playing field will be even in terms of power, giving developers no excuse to dismiss the Wii U.

The other scenario is more risky for Nintendo, but could still work out for them, if the other consoles do end up much more powerful, AAA games might not find their way onto the Wii U, but who's to say that lower budget games won't have a strong presence? The eShop is already becoming a haven for Indie developers (according to the developers themselves) and if Sony/Microsoft doesn't change their policies regarding their online shops, Nintendo could very well end up with the best Indie support of the 3, also consider smaller studios, we've several studios close down due to the financial failure of one game, if the Wii U can establish a huge userbase, then smaller developers (like Platinum from what we're seeing already) will be more inclined to support the Wii U instead of risk failure on a the Playstation/XBox.

Oh hey, a Japanese person apologizing. Lets make news out of it!

As if that doesn't happen every damn second. They apologize for anything and everything, it's just how their culture is.

At least they are apologizing, last I checked the NRA started pointing fingers at other people rather than owning up to their mistakes. I'd rather have a culture that owns up to their errors rather than a culture that likes to point fingers and places the blame elsewhere.

@obsequies Things changed since then. Not everyone want the same game. For me, adventure-platform game would be ideal, but for someone else it's an FPS, or racing game, or RPG... Today is harder to launch a console in the hope to satisfy a bigger audience .

@strongmokus @obsequies True. Even the Vita had more than twenty games available at release.

But it must be said that the Wii U also had plenty of launch games, specially for a Nintendo console. The problem was that too many of them were ports you don't really need to buy a new console for.

Seriously? Oh Nintendo, how you and your BS is coming to bite you in the ass.

It's almsot like they are apologizing for having no clue that they were releasing a system and didn't have enough time to get some good games going before hand.

You can see from day one they have no clue how to market to their main fan base. They are good at doing gimmiky asian things but for their western fan base gimmicks die fast and we need real content. Not having a Zelda at launch was the worst thing they could have done. Period.

They are desperate now and I am laughing. I was annoyed by the Wii and its throw away gimmicks and money grubbing shovelware.

I really hope the other consoles don't go this route...oh wait. They didn't alienate their 3rd party devs with crap controls and inferior hardware.....again.

@abHS4L88 @WingChopMasta Fanboys are sooo much better hey. It's ok you will get your Zelda remakes soon enough it seems. Man it must be hard to rehash the same franchises over and over and over and over and over and over....I guess remakes are better than nothing.

Fanboys aren't much better but hey, at least they support what they love rather than bash on what they hate.

Tell people you love and support a company, worst you can get is a whatever, tell people you hate and bash on a company, they're going to look at you weird and think you're insane.

But it's okay, you can continue to waste your life away hating on a company you clearly have no interest in, I'll continue enjoying what the gaming industry has to offer.

Please, please, PLEASE SOMEONE make a meme out of this tweet:
https://twitter.com/ctplante/status/294091986410041344

"Nintendo Direct felt like a Kickstarter video. Invest now and get cool things we can’t show you just yet, plus bonus HD remake rewards."
- Chris Plante, Polygon Editor

PS.: That isn't an enterily negative comment. If Bayonetta 2 and Wonderful 101 weren't incentive enough before, now I'll most certainly get an Wii U for Xenoblade 2 and Fire Emblem x Shin Megami Tensei... *When these games are out*. That's the whole point of the Kickstarter comparison.

@Stonecutters908 Don't get me wrong, I agree 100% with you about gaming journalism. The fact that I reproduced a funny tweet from a *personal* account from someone *related* to a website doesn't mean I endorse the website *per se*.

I just think that beyond the joke there's some measure of truth. That doesn't need to be a negative thing, just an acknowledgement that the future of Wii U is still in the cards. By getting one now you'll still have to wait for a lot of stuff Nintendo won't even show up right now.

@RealFabioSooner @Stonecutters908 Fantastic. I always thought we needed another used napkin for ever swelling garbage heap that is games "journalism." You know what I find hopelessly sad and ironic about 90% of games journalists? They want to be taken seriously, but their conduct and their work suggests the complete opposite. More like they are still trying to convince the world that they cover toys that are made for kids and man children.

@DonnyKD @airboard360 Are you forgetting how it took them almost a full year to release more than an HD remake of Ocarina of Time? My 3DS was collecting dust for months making me have buyers remorse. They're doing the same thing with the Wii U except they have no excuse this time, no apologies will be accepted considering this is the exact mistake they made with the 3DS.

They obviously didn't have that standard for the Wii when it was loaded with shovelware. Anyways they should've had the foresight to see multiplatform titles like Darksiders, AC, and Mass Effect wouldn't be enough to launch a new system on, they rushed the Wii U to launch and now they're dealing with the consequences.

And if they got enjoyment out of it, what's the problem? At least Nintendo took a risk and tried something different, simply injecting more power into your system is not going to push the industry forward, and that's what the PS3/360 proved. Granted we saw some really spectacular games that made use of the more powerful hardware, at the same time we saw a stagnation and over centralization of certain genres that the industry has never experienced before. Before this generation, we would see a healthy stream of games that spanned different genres, this generation, majority of the biggest games that came out were shooters or games that used to be something unique that eventually became a shooter.

Sure the Wii was still in a prototype stage when it came out but now motion controls are to a point where it's no longer waggle this and waggle that.

@abHS4L88 @catsimboy Well I think the Wii took it to a whole new level. What do you do in this game? Waggle the Wiimote and you win. What about this game? Waggle the Wiimote a different direction and you win. The fact that the Wii became the "Family" console led to a flood of minigame compilations for clueless grandparents to buy for their grandchildren.

So is Sony and Microsoft any better? The 5th and 6th generation, shovelware was more prevalent on both Playstations and right now the Kinect is being bombarded with shovelware.

It's how the industry works, whichever is the hottest console at the moment, the most shovelware will appear on it. None of these companies can possibly have the time to filter through all of these games.

Not in any "I'm pissed off" kind of ways but honestly I don't care about apologies from all these developers , game directors, etc. It's just a publicity stunt to win back some points with the people.

I don't really mind but I find the best apologies are when they learn from they're mistakes and fix what they messed up to make something with quality again.

Yeah, for those wondering, there has been an announcement for a Shin Megami Tensei + Fire Emblem crossover, and a gameplay trailer for the new project by Monolith, probably Xenoblade related.

Just saying, in case somebody wanted some actual news.
