NGP will sell for $300-$350 - Analyst

EEDAR's Jesse Divnich says Sony's just-announced portable could sell for current going rate of PlayStation 3 or above; due out this holiday season.

Yesterday in Tokyo, Sony officially announced its latest on-the-go gaming device, currently codenamed the NGP (Next Generation Portable). The new piece of tech sports robust specs and will be out by year's end supported by software from popular franchises like Uncharted, Resistance, and Call of Duty. However, eager gamers are likely concerned about one particular specifically…its price.

Sony has yet to officially price the NGP.
Sony has yet to officially price the NGP.

According to Electronic Entertainment Design and Research's Jesse Divnich, speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, the NGP could potentially sell at a price between $300 and $350. Divnich also said Sony is now holding the reins of portable entertainment and that the NGP will be emblematic of the portable gaming sphere, whether the device succeeds or not.

"The market is ripe for portable high-end gaming. The NGP will be a serious threat to all forms of portable entertainment," he said. "After seeing the specs today, if the NGP can't succeed, it is clear that the portable gaming landscape has forever changed. The future of portable entertainment is in the hands of Sony."

Additionally, Sony's Europe boss Andrew House told Eurogamer that the NGP will be available at an unspecified "affordable" price.

"I can't put a ballpark on it in terms of figures, but what I would say is that we will shoot for an affordable price that's appropriate for the handheld gaming space," he said.

The best move Sony could make is to price it somewhere in the $250 - $300 range. Most everything that is included is existing tech that has been integrated into this design. The biggest cost for this will be building the software for the touch pad recognition, and even then that will likely come mostly from game developers and be game specific like it is in Uncharted. And thank you Sony for ditching discs on your portable systems and going to cartridges. This should cut back on load times, give us better battery efficiency, and larger game storage size.

Seeing as there are multiple SKUs of this coming(Presumably with varying size of built in memory depending on price), I'd lay money that the cheapest iteration will actually be CHEAPER than the 3DS. If that happens, it'll be hard to justify a 3DS purchase over the NGP for me personally.

300-350 is pricy for a handheld, but then so is 250 for a 3DS. I'd rather pay the extra 50-100 and get the extra functionality that this thing offers.

@The_crapgamer I agree, the PSP2 will be more expensive than the 3DS, and it will only be available to those who can truly afford it without getting into debt.

$300 to $400 is too expensive to get enough market share. That price point eliminates kids, College students and anyone on a budget. Parents wont want to buy their children a $400 handheld with possible $50-$60 games. The 3DS while pricey at $250, now seems like the logical choice given it's $100 to $150 price differential. If the PSP Go sold for $250 and that was without any of the features put into the NGP, what price is this tech monster going to be? I'd say the cheapest is $350, the one with 3G probably $50 more.
