Prepare to throw down across the world in singles matches, tag team showdowns, and the new King of The Battleground mode.

2K Games and developer Saber Interactive have revealed the game modes that will be on offer in WWE 2K Battlegrounds, which include one on one showdowns, tag team action, and a new King of The Battleground match type.

Narrated by Paul Heyman, advocate for former WWE Champion Brock Lesnar, the trailer describes the original story of the campaign mode, in which Stone Cold Steve Austin and Paul Heyman travel the globe and recruit new rookie sensations.

You'll be able to step into the tights of one of seven newly created superstars, such as Bolo Reynolds and Jessica Johnson, take on WWE talent, and battle across international locations. In addition to the storyline, progress will also unlock new WWE superstars, power-ups, and items.

Exhibition mode ranges from traditional singles competition to four-player bouts in either local or online matches. The match types listed so far include:

  • One-on-One
  • Tag Team
  • Triple Threat
  • Fatal Four Way
  • Steel Cage Match
  • Royal Rumble

King of The Battleground Mode is WWE 2K Battlegrounds' more frantic take on the traditional elimination match, but with a gauntlet event and score attack flavor. Throw an opponent out of the ring, watch your score increase, and then prepare to fight a new challenger in a grueling effort to be the last wrestler standing.

Battleground Challenge Mode will task you with creating a custom superstar as you work your way from rookie cannon fodder to main event player, and the Online Tournament Mode is a variety of time-limited tournaments that feature a wide range of win conditions.

An arcade brawler, WWE 2K Battlegrounds is the only wrestling game from WWE expected this year after last year's disastrous outing for Visual Concepts when WWE 2K20 was released. GameSpot's review scored the game a 2/10, and saw 2K Games respond to the negative feedback by giving Visual Concepts an extra year to work on the next WWE 2K installment.

WWE 2K Battlegrounds will arrive on September 18 for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, and Google Stadia.
