Screenshots for the newly revealed Valkyria Chronicles sequel, Valkyria: Azure Revolution, have appeared online by way of Japanese gaming publication Famitsu.

The images, which you can see above, show off the game's highly-stylised visuals, as well as a few characters. As previously announced, Valkyria: Azure Revolution is set in a world where the Rus Empire has rapidly expanded thanks to an industrial revolution brought about by the discovery of a mineral called Ragnite.

The Empire's growth has brought it into conflict with Jutland, a small country fighting for "independence and freedom." The main protagonist is a commanding officer in the Judland Kingom's Anti-Valkyria Unit. Although this hasn't been confirmed, he is likely the character featured in the screenshot above.

Valkyria: Azure Revolution is being developed by Media Vision, which also worked on Valkyria Chronicles 3 for PSP. It is scheduled to launch in Japan in 2016. A demo will be included with Valkyria Chronicles Remaster, which will be available for PS4 on February 10 in Japan. The remaster will feature improved visuals, include DLC, and Trophy support.

Sega has finally figured out that handhelds crippled this series.

Another PS4 exclusive. Keep them coming. I love the diverse library on PS4 and the new Japanese games Renaissance.

@TristanPR77: What makes you think that this is a PS4 exclusive? Only the demo is on PS4, and that's mainly because it's packed alongside a remaster of the first game for PS4.

Considering the series was all but dead without any hope of revival until its success as a port on PC, I imagine Sega will find it difficult to justify releasing another exclusive VC on a Playstation platform. The original VC's sales on PS3 drove it to exile on handheld platforms, the subsequent VC2's sales drove it away from Western releases, and despite VC3's quality its Japanese sales practically killed the series.

The VC series had nothing but a series of terrible luck and sales on Playstation platforms until its PC port later, which broke all expectations.

@GhoX: Well there is no PC announcement, but if they keep it a PS4 exclusive I will be beyond pissed, they sold a lot of copies on PC and now they **** us over, not cool Sega.

@GhoX: No what killed it was not being on a Sony console it was going to handhelds. Clearly the first game sold enough on the ps3 to warrant to sequels.

Also I feel like many people, myself included don't really count the pc. When we talk about exclusivity its about being exclusive on a console.

But I disagree with his comment about Reinssance, PlayStation has always had a lot of jrpgs and good ones at that, the ps3, vita, and psp were no exception.

@divinejester: The first game didn't sell enough to warrant a sequel on a main platform. It was a commercial flop, despite good critical reception. Feel free to look it up. The series always had poorer and poorer sales until it reached PC. A lot of consolites are just hypocrites and would rather buy the yearly COD than one of the most critically well-received gems on PS3.

@GhoX: In Japan maybe.

GO back and look at the interviews with the producer, the PSP was hot $#!@ in Japan back after the first game was released and they went with the higher install base (as the PS3 had sold not greatly in Japan in the first few years of the systems life) so they could sell more copies. And VC 2 and 3 did very well for Sega on the PSP in Japan.

Unfortunately everyone who championed the game in the west (including the Sega of America producer who was all over social media back in the day for the game) didn't want it on anything but PS3 and after the sequel tanked on the PSP in the US, we never saw another one ever again.

And now you know....

@jenovaschilld: Bad news everyone, (or at least somewhat disconcerting). Sounds like the strategy element may take a back seat. I'm still cautiously optimistic though.

@barbarossa213: Oh that just makes me nauseated, one of the most praised games of the 7th gen bastardized into a shooter. Please say it ain't so.

@jenovaschilld: No, no, (at least I hope no), not a shooter, more of an RPG from the sounds of it. RPGs are my favorite genre, but Valkyria Chronicles was something different altogether. It was the whole reason I bought a PS3 back in the day, and the reason I'd buy a PS4 in the future.

Ozawa: “We wanted to do something new using Valkyria, and one of the things we’re putting in is a real-time system. Initially, we were considering real-time strategy, but we went with an RPG because we think that’s what more users will want to play. This time, we switched to an RPG. The concept of the battle system and the sensation of the battlefield are the same, but because it’s an RPG with simulation elements, you can experience the battlefield through a different perspective."

I know how you feel though with the nausea though. Change is usually a bad thing in an established series.

Until they give me a definitive western release date (remaster or Azure Revolution), it's hard for me to get excited about this news. Now I may just have to go back and play the original.

My fear is that they'll announce a western release date and it will be early 2018 or something ridiculous like that.

so apparently the new valkyria game will not have a turn based battle system. the game is no longer a sjrpg but rather a jrpg... as a big fan of the original, i couldn't help but feel disappointed by this news. hopefully there will be a strategy element to the battles, even if it's not an all out sjrpg.

@Xristophoros: There is still strategy in turn based or any rpg for that matter, you need to think plan your turns as much inturn based as you do in strategy ones, the only extra element in strategy games is that movement in addition to you actual "active" turn becomes important.

It makes me sad that Sega doesn't port these games over to Xbox. One of the reasons I didn't buy a PS2 was that Sega's Toejam and Earl 3 was exclusive to the Xbox. I'm too hooked on MS's achievement system to switch back to Sony now.

@Suaron_x: Yeah, Sony doesn't have any sort of achievement system at all. So, it makes sense that you wouldn't want to game on their platform (/sarcasm)

Maybe you're confusing them with Nintendo?

@otterbee: I don't know the details of the Sony trophy system and I imagine it's similar to MS's. The problem is I have a high number on MS's system and a zero on Sony. Plus I've signed up for Gold for several years to come and it makes no sense pay for PS Plus until that is expired.

Oh I so want the remaster of the first one here in the US. It was such a good story! The sequel on the psp was crap. The main character was annoying which ruined the formula of why I liked the first one. Gameplay was still pretty good though. I really hope Azure comes to the US. It will sell. There is nothing else like it.

Considering 70% of the purchases for the original game was from the West, I hope we can assume this new game will be published here as well.
