New Trailer For Animated Mortal Kombat Film Sets Up Scorpion's Bloody Revenge

The Red Band trailer for the new Mortal Kombat animated film, Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge, dropped on March 8. Scorpion's Revenge is the first animated Mortal Kombat project since the 1996 title, Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm.

Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge looks to be pretty in-line with the game's aesthetics: blood, gore, and limb separations are plentiful. Scorpion executes some decapitations in the trailer, and Sonya smashes in a face or two. Other characters who look like they'll have a major part in the movie include Sub-Zero, Rayden, Liu Kang, Shang Tsung, and Johnny Cage.

In the trailer, Sub-Zero almost kills Scorpion, whose name is Hanzo at the time, and did kill his entire family. Somehow, Hanzo is saved by sorcerer Quan Chi and thereafter, he assumes the alter ego of Scorpion. On a mission of revenge, Scorpion chooses to attend the "once in a generation" competition, Mortal Kombat, because Sub-Zero is also attending. It also looks like the host of the competition, warlock Shang Tsung, has some nefarious motivations. He brings out iconic character, Goro, to fight in the competition as well.

Both Goro and Shang Tsung are antagonists in the first Mortal Kombat game. Goro was an unplayable villain and served as the next-to-final boss and is a member of the multi-limbed race known as the Shokan. Before being defeated by Liu Kang, Goro reigned over the Mortal Kombat championships for almost 500 years. In Mortal Kombat: Trilogy, Goro returned as a playable character, and in few subsequent titles, often switching between the good and evil side.

A live action Mortal Kombat film, produced by Aquaman director, James Wan is also set to arrive in 2021. Mortal Kombat also wrapped up its annual competition recently and player SonicFox took the championship. He won with Joker as his fighter and impressively clinched the win at 1% health.

Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge will be released digitally on April 12 and physically on April 28.
