New Tony Hawk game likely for 2012

Legendary skateboarder says fresh series entry "probably" coming sometime next year; developer/publisher not named.

In early February, Activision announced that it had put the Tony Hawk skateboarding series on hold, saying that no new franchise entry would arrive in 2011. However, the birdman will crash back onto the scene in 2012, if comments from Hawk himself prove accurate.

Tony Hawk keeps the wheels spinning with a new game next year.
Tony Hawk keeps the wheels spinning with a new game next year.

In an interview with PixelatedGeek, Hawk was queried as to whether or not gamers can expect more Tony Hawk games in the future. He responded, "We're going to do something probably for next year but I can't give too much away." Activision officials have said they still see potential in the franchise, saying in December that Tony Hawk has the staying power of Michael Jordan.

The most recent Tony Hawk game--Tony Hawk: Shred--was developed by independent studio Robomodo and sold under 3,000 units in its first week. It was the second game, following Tony Hawk: Ride, to use the much-maligned skateboarding peripheral.

I hope the next Tony Hawk game is more like THPS 4 or THUG 1. Please go back to the roots, THPS 8 was garbage as were all the ones after Proving Ground.

THPS 3 and THPS 4 were amazing, as were THUG 2 and THAW. I want to play games like those again.

Yeah, it looks like everybody wants to return to the old days of THPS. I'd be totally fine with that. The last Tony Hawk game I enjoyed was Project 8.

The main selling point of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater series, (including Underground 1 and 2) was the degree of freedom and surrealism. People grew addicted to the game because you were given the ability to literally bounce around an entire skate park without landing on the ground. It was fun doing 1080 flips with only 3 seconds of airtime. It's not that hard. Produce a game similar to the original Tony Hawk Pro Skater, give players the ability to live the life of a superstar skater, (like, TONY HAWK?), and make it FUN. That would instantly surpass Skate 1, 2, and 3...

I REALLY hope they don't make another tony hawk game. SKATE is a much, much better game and there's no topping it when Rob Dyrdek, arguably the most popular skater right now, is always part of Skate. Tony Hawk, as great as he is, is now obsolete.

I just want THPS 5, bring back the funky and cool levels, the outrageous storyline, C-O-M-B-O, high score, collect SKATE, find all gaps, secret tape, crazy grind, barrel roll, acid drop, etc. etc. that's all we need.

too much Activision heat meaning when it said "publisher not named", but who knows, maybe a big name not name EA? (MAY LEAD a spin-off of skate?), could lead to something. with the heat on activision these days everything can happen., but activision is not "evil" and mostly 'raping" gaming brands by the way why we always say "raping" i know is a "crime". isn't it "sigh".

Just makes Tony Hawk World... Make a huge virtual city where many gamers can join then enter levels of part 1,2,3 and 4. the only great ones. The gameplay will be like the ones from the old games. So if you go into a part 1 level it will play exactly like that but in HD. And of course with other gamers online. Makes highest scores competions, biggest one trick, and maybe capture the flag or capture the board :) This would sell amazingly well, and would make any Tony Hawk fan relieve what was once a great franchise. Do this and launch it on psn and arcade live.30$ a pop. then release the next Hawk game 3 years down the line and make it so real it will make us drool, but not frustrating real like skate.

I mean seriously, give this game to a new developer/publisher and simply make Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5. I would buy that in a heartbeat.

There is only one thing that needs to be done to make a good Tony Hawk game: keep Activition's grubby mitts away from it.

Tony Hawk 2 was SO fun, 3 was really great too. I want it to go back to 2min sessions on separate unique levels instead of individual session open world gameplay.

what he needs to do is make a game that doesn't simulate skateboarding, but a game that simulates making a game simulating skateboarding simulating a game. it'll be like inception but on wheels.

The last Tony Hawk game worth playing was Underground 2 back in 2004. They shouldn't even bother any more after Ride.

Let the captain go down with the peice of outdated crap he came in on. Don't get me wrong, tony hawk was awesome when no one else had done a game like that.... But now... what are they even DOING? Every time they come out with a game they do something "Radically" different, yet release the same rehashed nonsense since the first entry. EA needs to buy the rights to this, pump some .skate love into it, and create the true ultimate skating game.

I can't believe there was someone in the company that thought, "Yeah, people will buy our stupid, expensive board accessory so that they can play *one* game then have it lying around, and it definitely will even get that far once they see online that the game is, in fact, just crap, plastic board or not."

I haven't even heard about the shred game before. The series can be great again. They just need to go back to the drawing board and stop trying to release these gimmicks as a quick and cheap means to make profit. With the last few horribly failed releases, I cant imagine this money hungry company would make another game unless they were planning to do just that. I'll still wait for reviews and gameplay footage though.

Activision refuses to give up on the series. They still think it has a chance to be good again. I admire their dedication, but they need to learn how to face facts. They have not made a good TH game since T.H.U.G. 2. They need to go back to the Pro Skater formula.

The only way Tony Hawks will get good again is if they go back to doing the Pro Skater kind of games and drop the stupid board controller. HAWKS bring back pro skater....the people have spoken.

@HardcoreHector to be honest, if you asked me to choose between Skate or any of the Tony Hawk game before Project 8, I would pick THPS everytime, I like Skate, buts its tooooo realistic, I much prefer playing games like THPS2 or 3 where its just crazy combos with crazy moves... its much more fun that a realistic game

This is one of those franchises, like Madden, that somehow got way worse on the current generation of consoles than the stellar games produced for the older generation of consoles (PS1,Xbox, PS2). I don't understand how these developers are able to do less with more but that is what is going on with Tony Hawk and Madden.

Bring back the Arcade Skateboarding fun of Tony Hawks 3, 4 and THUG. Throw in a cheesy but quite awesome story mode, maybe make it involve building your own skatepark (a' la American Wasteland) but with more control over where you put things. PERHAPS add abit of a business sim style management option to it (if you like that kind of thing - we're not talking Skateboarding Tycoon here). And let me feel the fun of grinding for 2 hours whilst triple kick flipping into a manual to tail grab off a kicker 5 minutes after the final beap of the 2 minute counter hits... Brilliant.

It's been so much of the same game but with bigger million point combos that it's lame. Nobody wants to play that. The people like the realistic simplicity and awesomeness of the skate. franchise.

That Tony Hawk is still confident that there is a next game featuring him but it is not likely to be a skateboarding game can only mean these: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 DLCs: 1) Tony Hawk's Gnarly Map Pack - Skateboard parks to battle in! Only $15! (Complete with many, many Ads that you would like to see too!) 2) Tony Hawk's Military-Grade Non-Powered Infantry Mobility Enhancer - Unlockable skateboards for soldiers to zip around in! (DLC only available at GameStop at $199 with Tony Hawk-autographed skateboard with camo paint - bonus!) 3) Tony Hawk's Ass-Knife - Unlockable achievement that requires the player character to skate off buildings and kill himself in a fall! Wicked! (Costs $5 and requires above DLC to work. It's a steal!) 4) Tony Hawk's Trippy - Unlockable perk that increases the player character's toughness at the cost of occasional loss of player control. (Noggles!)

I quite liked THUG, even THAW was decent. I didn't care much for the series after that. I hope they take the series back to the good ol' days (Pro Skater). None of this "skate on a plastic peripheral" crap. Really guys, i don't mind using a controller!
