New Tomb Raider TV Series Trying To Be "Dangerous And Exciting," Bring Back '90s Vibe

Amazon Studios is producing a new Tomb Raider TV series (and publishing the next Tomb Raider game as well), tapping Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge to write the show. In a new interview, Waller-Bridge said she is hoping to achieve something "dangerous and exciting."

"What if I could take the reins on an action franchise, with everything I've learned, with a character I adore, and also just bring back some of that '90s vibe?" she told Vanity Fair (via Collider). "I feel like when you're working in the industry, you've got to ride the waves and lean in."

"There's room to do something really quite dangerous, and if I can do something dangerous and exciting with Tomb Raider. I already have an audience of people who love Lara and hopefully will continue to. And that is a very unusual position to be in. It's the old Trojan horse."

Waller-Bridge previously discussed how she felt her career so far in the action space--including writing on No Time to Die and starring in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny--has led her to this moment with Tomb Raider.

"The character of Lara Croft was inspired by Indiana Jones and James Bond. So there's so much, and it just felt like the perfect final step in my own personal adventure through this kind of franchise world," she said earlier in June.

It is still early days for the new Tomb Raider TV series, and there is no word yet on the cast--including who might play Lara Croft.

In the film space, plans were in place for a sequel to the 2018 Tomb Raider film starring Alicia Vikander. However, Vikander dropped out when the film rights were sold.

Amazon is now reportedly planning an MCU-like franchise for Tomb Raider, and it seems to be coming together already. In addition to the TV series and the new Tomb Raider game from Crystal Dynamics, a Tomb Raider movie from Amazon is said to be in the works.
