New Resident Evil: The Final Chapter Movie Trailer Teases An Epic Conclusion

Today during a panel at New York Comic-Con, Sony released a new trailer for next year's Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. Following on from a teaser earlier this week, this video provides the best look at the movie based on Capcom's video game franchise so far.

It teases out some of the story, which will explain Alice's history and motivations, and also showcases some spectacular action sequences. There is also a good amount of monsters and even a triple-barrel shotgun to look at. Check it out:

The Final Chapter hits theaters on January 27, 2017. Milla Jovovich stars as Alice, alongside Ali Larter as Claire Redfield and Ruby Rose in the role of Abigail. The movie is directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, who made all of the previous Resident Evil movies with Jovovich, his wife.

During a panel where this trailer was released, Anderson teased that The Final Chapter will be the scariest movie in the entire series, while Jovovich stated that it will have the best, more surprising death sequences. Anderson and Jovovich were also asked if The Final Chapter is indeed the last movie in the series, but neither confirmed outright that it was. However, the movie will tie up loose ends from the previous films, as it brings things "full circle," Jovovich explained.

Also during the panel, Anderson said part of the reason why the Resident Evil series has enjoyed such success over the years (the movies have brought in more than $1 billion) is because the filmmakers understand and respect the video games. Video game movies have a track record of mediocrity or worse, and Anderson said some of that might be the result of filmmakers not knowing enough about the games they are based on. For what it's worth, the films in Anderson's Resident Evil movie series, have not been widely praised, even if they have indeed made a good amount of money.

Anderson's first Resident Evil film was 2002's Resident Evil, which was followed by Resident Evil: Apocalypse in 2004. Resident Evil: Extinction came next, in 2007, while its successor, Resident Evil: Afterlife, debuted in 2010. Resident Evil: Retribution, the latest film in the series, premiered in 2012. According to Box Office Mojo, every movie made more money than the last with the exception of Retribution.

Even if Anderson and Jovovich say goodbye to the franchise after The Final Chapter, there is always the possibility that the series could live on with a different director and cast.

The next Resident Evil video game, Resident Evil 7, is scheduled to come three days before The Final Chapter arrives in theaters, on January 24, 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
