Updated on October 3, 2023: As reported by Kotaku, PlayStation has revised this offer. At this time, new PS5 owners will get a free game by invitation only. If you are selected, a banner will appear after activating your PS5. The offer is tied to PSN accounts, so brand-new players to the PlayStation ecosystem may not be eligible for the freebie.

As such, there's no guarantee you will get a game by purchasing a PS5. This could mean that brand-new players to the PlayStation ecosystem aren't eligible for this offer.

Sony has revealed a time-limited promotion that allows new PS5 to add a free digital game to their library. Valid until October 20, the deal allows anyone who buys and activates a new PS5 console to select a free game from a list of PlayStation console exclusives, including Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered, God of War Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, and more.

How to get a free PS5 game

To redeem the offer, you'll need to follow these steps:

  • Buy and activate your new PS5 console
  • Once your PS5 console is activated, navigate to the PlayStation Store on your PS5 console
  • Click on the banner offer to make it to the Games Page that features eligible games to choose from
  • Select one game from the list below to download for free

Both of Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man games are fun action-adventure experiences that every PlayStation owner should try. God of War Ragnarok is a Nordic blockbuster with fantastic storytelling, and Ghost of Tsushima is a samurai sandbox with incredibly sharp action to master. For anyone looking for a high level of challenge, Housemarque's Returnal can be a merciless game and Demon's Souls is a stellar remake of From Software's genre-defining action-RPG.

Previously, Sony had offered a different--and older--selection of games to PS5 owners via the PlayStation Plus Collection. This program allowed PS Plus subscribers to access 19 games with their membership. The list included Bloodborne, The Last of Us Remastered, Uncharted 4, and more. The PS Plus Collection was discontinued in May. You're only getting one game with this new promotion, but it's not tied to a PS Plus membership, so the game is yours to keep.

This promotion happens to end the same day Marvel's Spider-Man 2 launches, October 20. Sony released a special limited-edition version of the PS5 console to tie in with that Spider-Man sequel, but unfortunately it's currently sold out. You can, however, take advantage of some PS5 deals shown above, including the Final Fantasy 16 PS5 bundle for $50 off at Walmart.
