New PS4 Delivers "Ultra-High Definition Resolution Graphics," Report Says

Yet another report claims Sony is working on a more powerful PlayStation 4.

Though Sony has yet to make an official announcement, the evidence for a more powerful PlayStation 4 console continues to mount. The Wall Street Journal today backed up what reports from Kotaku and Eurogamer said earlier: Sony is working on a new version of the PS4 that can handle "higher-end gaming experiences." This includes virtual reality, the site said, citing sources.

This new system, which will reportedly boast "enhanced graphics and power," will live alongside the existing PS4, with games working for both platforms, according to the WSJ.

No Caption Provided

"Existing PlayStation 4 owners would need to buy the new model to take full advantage of the enhanced graphics and power," it said. "Though it is likely that the current model and the coming one would share the same software catalog."

The WSJ also reports that the new console--which wasn't given a name but is apparently being referred to as the PS4 4K--will be announced before the October launch of PlayStation VR, sources said. The system will be able to power "ultra-high definition resolution graphics."

Sony itself has admitted that PlayStation VR, which is powered by the PS4, may be technically inferior to Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, which run on higher-end PCs. The improved PS4 would help close the gap, the WSJ said.

It's also claimed in the WSJ report that Sony's ambition with the new system is "to capture gamers willing to pay for a richer gaming environment, including a high-end virtual-reality experience."

Analysts quoted in the WSJ's story today said continuing to offer the standard PS4 alongside the more powerful unit will help Sony on its path to giving players--casual and hardcore alike--more options in the PlayStation ecosystem.

A price for the new, more powerful PS4 was not mentioned in this report.

Sony may not be alone in releasing new gaming hardware. Recently, Xbox boss Phil Spencer teased that, "You'll actually see us come out with new hardware capability during a generation allowing the same games to run backward and forward compatible."

Traditionally, console gamers have to wait many years for new hardware. For example, the PlayStation 3 was released in 2006, with the PS4 coming in 2013. The Xbox 360 launched in 2005, while the Xbox One came out in 2013.

Sony declined to comment.

If this report is accurate, including the pre-October announcement, one possibly venue for the reveal could be E3 in June. Keep checking back with GameSpot for more on Sony's hardware plans.

I'm not really concerned with buying the new PS4K or whatever... I Just recently bought the new standard ps4 with black ops 3 bundled for only $349. I am very happy. I work a whole lot so I will only be able to play a little throughout the week but ive had a ps3 forever. Im ready for the ps4 standard. plus the samsung smart tv that i have can probably only handle up to 1080p maybe less.. who knows. I just want a fun experience. you say sony is too greedy yet everybody else on here seems really greedy... so just be a happy gamer for gods sake.

the entire reason for the upgraded version is because Sony realized the current model wasnt enough to run PSVR how they wanted, which seems kind of shortsighted on their part since PSVR had to be in development alongside of the PS4. Most people dont realize it wont be that big an upgrade and the new model isnt going to run games in 4k, its more like it will be able to run all games at 1080/60, which the current model cant do 100-percent of the time.

Sony is kind of screwing their fans with this, but I guess they figure everyone isnt going to want PSVR so they will be happy with the older model and they already sold a ton of consoles on 1080 resolution hype so why not milk the fans more and go the Apple route selling this one using 4k hype? Worked the first time around. Considering how Sony fanboys are as brainwashed as Apple fans, will probably work.

I guess the good thing is you'll be able to buy a used ps4 really cheap soon with all the trade-ins.

@oflow: I think if the new hardware was better that wouldn't be a bad thing for anyone. This generation of consoles were very different that previous ones. Ms and Sony jumped into the super computer and continous enhanced graphics cards that we see in the pc industry. They didn't create the processor by them selves and added more ram to compete with super computers that run games smoother. Although they didn't all the way in where we can swap chipsets and upgrade our hardware ourselves it was expected they would keep doing so them selves. Back in the day each enhanced ps or Xbox system itteration were about adding more storage and making the hardware slimmer and thus cheaper. Now they do have the luxury to enhance the performance as well. As long as I can sell my console used and trade in for ps4k with slightly more I wouldn't mind it. But if the price was way higher then I'd say yes they are going the Apple way. Plus I would really feel cheated if some games didn't run on ps4 but ran on ps4k. If they do this then screw them but I think that wouldn't be the case. Simply the game will look better in the new version which is fair. Pay more for a better performance instead of waiting another cycle for ps5.

Gaming consoles can't be priced below $400 anymore. Did you realize that many years ago a top graphics card was $200 and now they charge $1000. When graphic cards manufacturers realized that people was willing to pay more for more horse power this race became unfair towards the consoles.

Mobile devices will catch up PS4/X1 graphics by next year so it's true that this generation was way too weak!

Deal with it!

@7rooper: you do also realize that $200 back then probably has about the same purchasing power as $1000 now right? The race isnt unfair to consoles because its not a race between pc and console. if you want high end graphics you buy a pc. people buy consoles for convenience and exclusives. Prior to Sony shilling resolution as a marketing gimmick this gen, most people didnt even care about resolution numbers on consoles.

I'm going to upgrade if the difference is big enough. I hate how weak consoles are this gen (compared to PCs or even my Notebook that outperforms them). I'm also willing to pay more for it. But please, put at least something like a GTX 980 in it

@ArchoNils2: I myself am surprised when people say they feel the PS4 is underpowered. Sure if you compare to a high end PC it might be, but, compared to the PS3 there is a big enough difference to warrant the upgrade. Also, what some people don't factor into the price of the console is the included controller. It's very high quality and wouldn't retail for less than $50. So, the PS4 and even X1 are great systems and Devs have the advantage of optimising for 1 spec. I, like you, would be ready to pay for a more powerful console, though, and wouldn't really mind purchasing an upgrade every 3 years. I know this doesn't apply to everyone, and I'm not certain this is the best thing for Sony to do given the success of the PS4, but, managed properly it could be great for people like us with disposable income, who are graphics whores, and enjoy gaming on consoles.

@computernoises: Well I meant something that can compare with a 980 and yes I know it's high end, but I'm just sick on how poorly the PS4 and xOne perform compared to my PC (2x 970 SLI). I'm kinda forced to play PS4 for the many japanese exclusive, but it's just sad how poorly this thing performs. I'd love to play my games on a PS4 in ACTUAL 4k with at least 50 fps

I imagined the old PS4 to be the one for the guys who don't have a lot of money and the new version to actually be a device for enthuiasts who are willing to pay more. I'd pay $1000 for a PS4 with full BC to all PSs and a GTX980 in it

@ArchoNils2: So you don't realize he's quoting what you said, stating that you're sick that your PS4 can't match your PC. Nowhere did he say this new mythical ps4, that may or may not exist. a $500 PS3 almost killed Sony's PS division, you think they'd release anything like that again?

@dotWithShoes: Can yo please tell me where i said I expected a PS4 at launch at this price should be able to be on par with 2 970s SLI? I just hate how weak this gen is and I would be willing to pay more for a device that can actually perform. Even my NOTEBOOK outperforms my PS4 at this point. If Sony goes the route of offering different system, they should just make the new PS4 much stronger (and more expensive) than the current PS4. Who can't affort it still has the weak Ps4 to buy

@ArchoNils2: l expected this gen from both Sony and Microsoft to come out of the gates stronger too... Regardless of whether it was $3,4,5, or $800.

I would also pay for a ps4 that had the latest gpu. Nvidias new one that is way better than the Titan is being released for $600 with a tiered version for $400 or something like that...

I think the people that would buy PSVR are the same people that would buy a PS4k anyway...im stoked for VR regardless

@dotWithShoes: Yeah I gues sthat's a missunderstanding. I hate this gen because the consoles all launched with outdated hardware, I just hate how poor they perform. By that I mean I wished they would release with much better hardware even if it is more expensive. I do realise that at this price point (and/or the lack of making a bigger loss on hardware sold like in the past) that the systems don't come close to a Notebook released at the same time

@ArchoNils2: Since you are well aware how much you paid for your PS4 and for your PC, it is a little bit amusing that you are so disappointed in performance. I mean, system with BD player, controller, HDD, CPU, power supply and solid amount of GDDR5 which is cheaper (at least here in New Zealand) than single 970 GTX... and it is so much weaker than 970 GTX SLI system..? Who would have guessed..?

In other shocking breaking news, people are sick and shocked how poorly Mazda 3 and VW Golf perform compared to Bugatti Veyron..? ;)

I will not be buying one. In fact I have written to Sony to tell them exactly what I think of their bloody money grabbing idea. Even though both will share the same the games, developers will clearly but their best efforts into the newer, more powerful model. We shouldn't have to be upgrading until the PS5 ffs!!

Just look at in terms of cost and the fact that this is consoles we are talking about not high end PC pricing. If, like millions and myself, you bought the PS4 at launch with a couple of games, that's £400.

So Sony expect us to upgrade do they? Right then. Let's say the new machine will be £400. That's £800 you will have spent on essentially one console. Then you want to buy into VR. That's another £350 so now we are at £1150. For a console not a high end PC.

And of course you then need to buy a 4K TV' to actually play the bloody thing on. That's at least £500.

So, for one console and VR, if you bought the first model and choose to upgrade you will have to lay out £1650!!!!! That's is scandalous!!

Finally Sony show that they are not about the players.

PLayStation is for the payers.

Very, very annoyed. It just shows Sony couldn't care less about consumers. This is a prime example of sheer greed and nothing else. Mind you , maybe they'll offer discounts on Sony 4K TV's.

Great. As underwhelming/underpowered as the console market currently is, all I read there was they're trying to move towards the phone model by releasing more powerful versions of the same things every so often, which would be horrible.

Or, in other words, "This console generation is an underpowered joke that we need to fix". I could see this coming from a mile away. Not to mention the fact that it also injects an 'upgrade cycle' into owning a console = $$$$$$$$.

So by your logic the PC is an underpowered joke as well because gamers keep having to update it. And that costs lots of $$$$$$$$. Again and again and again.

@t1000_v2: Except that consoles are not underpowered if you don't compare them to high-end gaming PCs. In consoles' realms, they are the most powerful systems available. So... one way or another, when you called them underpowered, you have already dragged PC in this conversation.

I don't see a problem in releasing more powerful PS4. Consoles have come closer than ever to PC with this, x86 based generation... it makes sense to adopt other PC qualities, such as natural backward compatibility. I will not be surprised if, at some point, Sony does not start offering productivity, social and other apps on PSN, together with keyboard and mouse peripherals, and turn PS4 in alternative to home PC for those light users who don't need full Windows compatibility.

There is zero chance that this new PS4 will output games at 4k unless it will cost $800-$1000 plus, if it will share the same games as the current PS4 there will only be a very small improvement in how the games look or play because the developer would have to make the game with the more powerful specs in mind which would make it suffer in performance on the older PS4's which would be the equivalent of Sony shooting themselves in the foot and alienating their customers who have already purchased a PS4. This is just a bad idea all the way around.

@JayQproductions: ever heard of a pc game. You are aware that a pc game can run on different pc's like a low end mid end and high end pc right? All thats done is changing aa resolution and fps settings to achieve this as well as having the right drivers. How do u know they havnt figured out a way for the two to coexist by having graphic settings increased on one and having settings at normal for the other? Maybe they have something worked out with the devs? Theyre obviously not in it to lose money but i see so many of these gamespot kids unable to think outside the box in terms of technology. Or they get seriously sensitive and butthurt becasue they probably cant afford the new model so they write silly comments out of fear lol let them figure it out instead of dwelling on all these silly assumptions. Nintendo did it with the wii-u and it worked well for them.

@JayQproductions:

I don't understand this. Sony and MS make their money from the games and accessories. If they take a bigger hit on the cost of building the console, so what ? On top of that, add mass-production of better GPU and CPU in the mix and it should all come out in the wash.

so sony lets it slip that psvr will not be exclusive to ps4 only, then rumors pop up about a more powerful ps4 releasing when the psvr comes out. The writing is on the wall... your current ps4 will struggle with the psvr and if you want the true experience you will have to buy the new ps4k. This, if true, is sony being scumbags.

@sodapoppimpski:

Why scumbags? Nothing is perfect. Everything has to work at a quality the price dictates. If Sony are making VR for PS4, it will run at the same quality level on the standard PS4, whether the PS4K gets released or not. But if you want it to run better, you buy better gear, hence the PS4K. It's not compulsory. You can stay as you are if you want and just play VR on your standard PS4 at the base level quality.

All the moaners about PS4.5 or PS4K are basically bummed that other gamers are going to have better quality because they want to pay for it. The moaners would like the extra quality but they want it for free. The PS4 is a great console. The best console ever made, but everything has a limit. If you want more, you're going to have to pay more and Sony is giving you the option. It's your choice. If you stay as you are, you will still be able to play all future PS4 at the quality your PS4 can deliver.

@sodapoppimpski: Sony was said to have stolen the wiimote's motion sensor technology right before launch when PS3 and Wii were coming out just to screw with Nintendo, back when Sega was its own company and released the Genesis they were doing the "Nintendon't" commercials, there is a lot more to point out but the console wars were never really peaceful.

Needs to be no more than $500, $400/450 is the better option. Could explain why the PS4 was underpowered in the first place.
