Marcus Nilsson, executive producer for Need For Speed at Ghost Games, pitched the project as combining numerous elements from previous editions in the series, "from the customisation of Need for Speed Underground, to the world of Need for Speed Carbon".

Key pillars of the gameplay, according to materials presented on stage at EA's E3 2015 press conference, were listed as: "speed, style, build, crew, outlaw." That suggests it will introduce key elements from previous entries in the series.

Nilsson described the project as "the definitive Need For Speed experience," whilst a trailer touched on in-game police chases. Nilsson also claimed that the game's world would be "twice the size of Need for Speed Rivals," and crucially, stated that the game would be open-world.
