Developed by a Japanese company by the name of Success, Cotton was originally a side-scrolling shooting game that appeared in arcades back in 1991. The game was later released on several console systems such as NEC's PC Engine (The US equivalent of the Turbo Graphics 16), the Sega Megadrive (the Japanese equivalent of the Genesis), the Sega Saturn, and the Sony PlayStation. The next installment in the series is currently being developed for the Dreamcast, and today we bring you new information and screens for it.

Titled Rainbow Cotton, this Dreamcast version still lets players take control of a little girl witch named Cotton, who uses her broom to travel. However, the Dreamcast version no longer sports the side-scrolling format. Instead, players can fly around in a forward-scrolling 3D environment, although there will be 2D animation sequences between stages.

Also new to the latest installment are separate life gauges for Cotton and her broom. When the broom's life gauge goes to zero, Cotton will have to run around the map. In other stages where Cotton is required to fly, Cotton will hang glide from a piece of silk.

Rainbow Cotton for the Sega Dreamcast is scheduled for a release this December 22 in Japan for a price of 5800yen (about US$54). A US release has not been announced. Definitely give these new screenshots a browse, and stay tuned for further Cotton updates shortly.
