A new standalone Joker movie starring Jared Leto is on the way. According to multiple reports today, Warner Bros. is moving forward with a film that Leto will also executively produce.

Leto played the Joker for the first time in 2016's Suicide Squad. The movie was not very well received but it made a lot of money and picked up an Oscar win. After the movie came out, Leto spoke extensively about how many of his Joker scenes were cut from the film. It certainly seemed that Leto wanted more screentime, and now he's getting that in spades.

"Were there any that didn't get cut?" he said in an interview. "There were so many scenes that got cut from the movie, I couldn't even start. I think that the Joker… we did a lot of experimentation on the set, we explored a lot. There's so much that we shot that's not in the film."

According to Variety, the new Joker movie with Leto could be the first in a new franchise. The new Joker movie could tie into Suicide Squad 2 and other properties in the future, including Margo Robbie's Harley Quinn standalone movie, the report said.

Plot details for Leto's standalone Joker movie are unknown at this stage. According to Variety, Warner Bros. will now search for a writer.

This movie is separate from the other one at Warner Bros. that will star Joaquin Phoenix in the title role. The Leto movie is part of the DC Extended Universe, while Phoenix's film apparently isn't.
