New Hitman Movie Misfires at Box Office

Hitman: Agent 47 limps to fourth place on the charts.

The latest attempt to bring a popular video game to the big screen, Hitman: Agent 47, has stalled at the box office, finishing the weekend in a disappointing fourth place. The follow-up to 2007's Hitman, adapted from IO Interactive's popular game, made just $8.2 million, putting it well below its predecessor's opening gross of $13.1 million. This result is not terribly surprising, as the movie started off with a slow Friday.

The film, which stars Homeland's Rupert Friend as the iconic shaven-headed assassin, had already been met by terrible reviews. While bad reviews certainly don't always relate to box offie success (as the Resident Evil films prove), the negative reception both critically and commercially put any franchise hopes that distributors Fox had for the property in doubt.

Elsewhere in the box office chart, hip-hip biopic Straight Outta Compton retained its hold on the top slot, pulling in a further $26.8 million to put it on an impressive domestic total of $111 million. Action smash Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation maintained its position at no.2, while horror sequel Sinister 2 debuted in third place.

The next Hitman game was announced at E3 and is due out later this year for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC across digital channels.

That actor just does not look like Agent 47. They didn't even get the bald head right so I am never going to see this movie- I don't even think it's worth pirating.

I liked the first Hitman movie and will probably like this one, but I definitely won't watch it at the cinema. It's good for action entertainment on TV, I'd even go so far as to record it if it airs at the same time as something better, but not more than that.

@kentray1985: Yeah, that NWA (No White Actors) movie is really something. It will in short become the most successful music biopic ever at the domestic box office.

Give me a Hitman movie in the vein of Drive. With little to no talking and zero explosions. The whole movie would be 47 trying to get in and out of a *insert high level security location here* to take out ONE person undetected. I'm tired of them trying to make 47 some sort of action bad ass.

@MonkeyKinght98: While I like action movies in the vein of these two Hitman movies, they don't make Agent 47 look like an assassin that much. He's more of a well dressed generic action hero. The second game was called Silent Assassasin. Silence and explosions don't mix well.

To be fair, nobody ask for another Hitman movie to begin with. The same thing for Fatastic Flop at that. That said, I got no fucks to give for Hitman: Agent 47.

Once filmmakers and studios start taking video game adaptations seriously, the trend of horrific theatrical train wrecks could possibly come to a halt. When you screw up a concept as simple as Hitman, you need to find another job.

Oh well, I guess Agent 47 will have to go back to Homeland and sleep with that fat chick again.

Maybe they should make a video game movie that's not based off a silent protagonist that you project your own style onto because he will never be the 47 you play.

Kinda figured after seeing the trailers. Not that i think video games couldn't be made into decent movies, its just made by people who don't appreciate the world or its characters.

47 works alone, stop having him have baggage to carry around every movie. Not a difficult concept.

@RoyialNetwork: Couldn't agree more. The problem with video game adaptations on the big screen is lack of understand of core values of the videogame by the people making the movie. Games are more complex than movies; adaptations can't work if the people in charge of production don't have a firm understanding of both.

@megakoresh: Yeah its a shame cause we know Hitman is awesome and could make a great film or series, but its like the ultimate form of dumbing down, where it loses its identity in order to fit mainstream expectations, i really think a series of missions strung together by an overarching story would be perfect and allow the film to show the Hitman as being proficient assassin, efficient, cold, calculating, above all else, professional.

Even if the rest of the world didn't like the movies, if they made one that gamers approve of that would be a huge step forward. Maybe there will be a day when I don't groan at hearing a video game being made into a movie.

@RoyialNetwork:

I thought the same thing. Just have him do missions. Instead there has to be a chick. There ALWAYS has to be a chick, just like in the first Hitman movie.

@PeterDuck: Exactly, the first Hitman game he got kissed and shivered, thats the kinda guy he is, just have a really good story across several missions and of Hitman being a badass killer, thats all we want.
