New GTA: London unlikely, says Houser

Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser says company would "love" to set a new game in Europe, but probably won't be a Grand Theft Auto game.

A new Grand Theft Auto game set in London is unlikely, according to Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser. Speaking with the Guardian, Houser said the developer could return to the setting of Grand Theft Auto: London 1961 and Grand Theft Auto: London 1969, but for a new franchise, not Grand Theft Auto.

No Caption Provided

"I think for us, my gut feeling is, GTA London was cool for the time, but games were more limited then," Houser said. "These days I think we would love to set a game in the UK, set in London, whatever, but I don't know if it would be a GTA game. I think there are plenty of great stories we could tell about the UK, great environments to showcase, great gameplay mechanics that could have a UK bent to them--I just don't think it would be a GTA necessarily."

Houser explained that Rockstar Games has "many" ideas for new games, but it does not have the development bandwidth to pursue everything it wants to. His own perception is that "GTA is America," he said.

Since the Grand Theft Auto series transitioned from a top-down perspective to a third-person open-world series, games in the franchise have been set in fictional cities based on major United States hubs like Los Angeles, Miami, and New York City.

Grand Theft Auto V launched on Tuesday for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, generating a record-setting $800 million on launch day alone. Versions of the game for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are likely to be released in 2014, according to one analyst.

@NoblesseOblige_ @Rhaego85 I love rugby but if you can catch an Aussie Rules Football match, then watch it. Someone could literally get murdered on the field and the would just keep playing around or over them.

Wow they do some pushing and shoving while hitting a ball with a stick. The typical NFL player could benchpress them for a light workout.

Yes I really want to play as a gangster who drinks tea, watches soccer and not allowed to own a gun. British gangsters are about as scary as a puppy dog panseys couldnt rob a candy store. Stupid idea. British are good at nice walks in the park and playing soccer leave the manly stuff to America who has balls.

Grand Theft Auto: London was a one hit wonder! Colourful and really classy. Unlikely is a good answer! I means there like a 5% chance of it happening. It's a YES!

It would be really cool but it would possibly have lower sales so that's why it won't happen. The tried-and-true US setting is more marketable.

@ddoggbritt16 Well GTA's protagonists are criminals so they wouldn't care if firearms are legal or not.

@ddoggbritt16 There's plenty of guns in the UK. People can still get licenses for firearms, it's just not as wide as in the States. That's not to mention illegal arms.

@linkdarkside @ddoggbritt16 Would you remind me how Niko got a gun in GTA IV? Because it sure as hell wasn't in a store. It was on the black market, where everyone can get various illegal items.

Liverpool and London come to mind when I think of crime families in the UK.

Liberty City, Vice City, Los Santos. Just about every major city in America resembles one or more of these three. You've already explored all that American culture has to offer.

You're severely undercutting the franchise to restrict it to America only. And slapping a new franchise label on GTA: London won't change what it is. My friends and I call Red Dead 'Grand Theft Horse'.

@J_Dangerously Well then that's your own damn choice to call it that. While all Rockstar games share certain key elements like the story and mission ztructure and some of the controls, Red Dead Redemption is a wholly different experience from GTA in alot of ways.

I doubt he would want to make just another reskinned GTA in London. And I agree with Houser's points on GTA being America. It's all about satire of America's culture and local flavour. America is a melting pot for all kinds of people in one landmass and it's iconic to the series.

And you're actually wrong about American culture if you think it all ends up in either Los Angeles, Miami and New York. There's DC, The South, Detroit, Chicago...

Hell there already was a representation of Vegas in GTA San Andreas, Las Venturas it was called. Might come back as an expansion pack, who knows.

I would love to see a GTA London. It would be great to see RockStar parody on how ignorant and hypocritical Europeans are when it comes to America. For example: How Europeans believe that all Americans are fat, but it's a known fact that European men are chubby-chasers (they hold the record for most obese woman), http://www.topnews.in/uk-records-most-obese-women-europe-2349377

or when they talk about how "selfish" Americans can be when a tragedy hits the country so they try to use dying people in 3rd world counties just so they can try to make themselves look like better people than Americans, but what they don't know is that they're really making themselves look like selfish, heartless, assholes and don't realize it because they're too stupid to notice that.

Europe doesn't resume itself to the UK....

And actually the US is classed second in the world as far as obesity goes.First being Mexico...your neighbor...go figure.

Yeah that crappy food they're getting from U.S. based multi-nationals now has an even worse effect on racially Native American people like Mexicans.

Just look up what happened to the Pima Indians in the South West.

@Class_Act998675 Mate, there will always be more cons than pros, no matter how you look at it. Not to sound racist, but it sounds like you're trying to defend your country from us, but it's not like we're out to get you. You realise you're the strongest superpower, and we respect things like that. What we cannot respect, i'm sure you could list down.

@perfect_player1 @Class_Act998675 That's not what I'm trying say. What I'm saying is that other counties out there are not so perfect either, and there's plenty of satire that's not all that exposed. The American satire has been done well enough.

I think R* picks cities that have an identity. Besides New York City (Liberty City), Miami (Vice City), and LA (Los Santos), the only other cities in America that have a clear identity are just Vegas and DC. At least in my opinion that's it. A lot of the other cities in America are kinda like carbon copies of other cities with no distinct vibe about them. Since they already did Vice City and Las Venturas, I hope they do a DC style city next.

Yeah but when you think of the Miami, New York, and LA, those cities are well known for crime, culture, entertainment, the people, etc. What does Seattle have to offer with regards to those? Just entertainment with early 90's rock scene. With DC you've got the federal government and all the white collar crimes that they commit, the people are uptight Polical assholes., it's a very violent city as is its sister city Baltimore. If anything it lacks an entertainment type buzz but that can be stretched.
