A mobile strategy game called Conquests & Alliances - 4X Empire Builder has been in soft launch for multiple months in some regions, and 2K has just revealed that it will be retitled Civilization: Eras and Allies to become an official part of the Civilization series. 2K also clarified that the mobile title is being developed by a third-party studio, and will have no impact on the next mainline Civ game.

Even after the name change takes effect, Eras and Allies is still in a soft launch phase for the time being. While 2K isn't gearing up to promote the mobile title just yet, it did send out a statement clarifying the game's place in the series, knowing fans would catch on to the change in title.

"As part of our continued efforts to explore and expand into new audiences, Civilization: Eras & Allies is in soft launch in limited territories," a 2K spokesperson said. "Civilization: Eras & Allies is a new standalone free-to-play mobile 4X social strategy game, featuring exciting new gameplay mechanics designed with the mobile social strategy gamer in mind."

"As we announced earlier this year, Firaxis Games is in active development on the next iteration of the legendary Civilization franchise," the statement added. "We are working with an external partner specializing in mobile social strategy games to develop Civilization: Eras & Allies."

While 2K is in the process of changing the game's name, the old title is still visible on the Google Play Store at the time of writing. "Embark on a journey through the ages of history and forge your path to glory in Conquests & Alliances - 4X Empire Builder," the store blurb reads. "Step into the shoes of legendary leaders and command empires that have shaped the world. From the legions of Julius Caesar to the strategic genius of Sun Tzu, the choice is yours. Will you conquer kingdoms with an iron fist or lead your empire with benevolence? In this real-time strategy (RTS) game, the fate of empires rests in your hands."

2K hasn't revealed when the mobile title might see a broader release in more regions.
