Asteroids: Outpost, the re-imagining of the classic Atari game, is now available on PC through Steam Early Access. You can buy the game today for $19.79 (to commemorate the game's original launch in 1979), a 34 percent markdown from its eventual $30 price. Atari is calling the title, which was initially announced back in February, an "MMO survival game."

Set in the "distant future," Outpost puts players into a deep space environment. You'll explore sci-fi locations and must embark upon missions to explore the universe to scavenge for and collect resources. Players can also craft equipment--including guns and vehicles--and also work with or against other players online.

Like other Early Access games, Outpost is an unfinished product, which you may want to keep in mind when deciding where to buy it now or wait until the final version. Atari says working together with the community has been a priority since it started development on the game. Releasing an unfinished version of the game on Steam is a way to further the developer's relationship with fans to help make it the best game it can be.

"As a socially driven, multiplayer, survival experience it is essential that we design game content that accounts for the way our users actually play," Atari said. "We've built this world, we've packed it with incredibly fun mechanics, and now we need YOU to help bring it all to life."

When will the final version of Outpost be available? Atari doesn't have a strict schedule, saying the game will remain in Early Access "as long as needed."

"While we don't anticipate this to go on forever, the launch product can be seen as a core game, with an ongoing, stream of updates as close to monthly as possible," the company said.

Atari also explained that the final version of the game will contain more elements than what's available now. The finished edition will come with additional environmental hazards, new base modules, expanded suit and rover development, "and much more."

The Early Access version of Outpost isn't lacking for features, however. The game currently includes mining, crafting, building, exploration, and PvP. Future updates will introduce new content, such as what was mentioned above.
