New 16GB Ouya revision out now, promises better controller and storage

Latest Ouya revision comes in a matte black finish and will set you back $129.

Watch out Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo! A new version of the Android microconsole Ouya has been released in the US.

Retailing for $129, the new model promises an overhauled controller, improved Wi-Fi, and 16GB of storage--double that of the original model's 8GB. An official image for the new microconsole says the new Ouya revision comes in an anthracite finish, which is a very fancy way of saying matte black.

The new machine is scheduled for release only in North America for now.

One of the founding members of the Ouya, Muffi Ghadiali, quit the company this month.

The Ouya shot to prominence after a barnstorming Kickstarter campaign saw the company rack up $8.6 million in funding. It became available commercially in June 2013, although the company has never divulged exactly how many machines it has sold.

Earlier this week, a report suggested that an Android microconsole from Amazon would be released sometime in 2014, at a price below $300.

More games that utilise the controller on Android the more desirable these boxes will become for a cheap console, some good controller games but just not enough, also frustrating that the Final Fantasy Remakes don't support controllers unlike the GTA anniversary editions.

It can barely emulate PS1 and N64 roms. A lot of PS1 roms ran slow and crappy. The Ouya isn't powerful enough to properly emulate PS2 and GameCube roms. As for Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis, they ran pretty much perfect.

What Emu did you use? I had a few hiccups with 2-3 PS1/N64 games, but everything else was butter smooth (on FPSe)

The Tegra isn't stong enough to emulate PS2 and GC (neither are most microprocessors on the market) but is really close to emulating Dreamcast

I actually bought the Ouya, solely for emulators, because I do not own a PC. It's not bad for emulation. But because it uses a hybrid version of Android, it's kinda difficult to get everything in the right folders. I eventually sold it. I bought an Everdrive instead, much much better.

That first sentence reeks of sarcasm. Seriously though unless they've managed to work out how to make one without controller lag they shouldn't bother.

@tom2750 The Original Xbox and PS2 can run all that when softmodded. Even a Softmodded Wii does SNES, NES and Genesis Emulation better than the Ouya

Not to mention PC emulators shit on everything else.

Point is, there are better and more powerful alternatives to emulating that'll save you those $120

@tom2750 I doubt this can run gamecube games or ps2 games. Hell I doubt it can even run N64 or ps1 games. Also, why would anyone buy hardware just to pirate old video games?

I don't think the problem is with the Ouya itself as far as sales are concerned: it is with Android games in general: non-console ports tend to be free to play with garbage pay-to-win mechanics offering either a paltry or shallow experience unsuitable for a home console. The one-off pick and play highs that work very well on a mobile also would not hold attention when you want something meaty for your TV.
